PS4 Update 2.50 “Yukimura” Preview: Suspend/Resume and More

I'll preface this by saying I haven't used Plex in a couple years, so maybe things have changed:

Back then when Plex scanned your library, it would look at the folder structure and filenames and go to a TV/Movie DB to pull down metadata for fancy covers and episode descriptions. Which is all fine and dandy, but if it wasn't able to find a match on the DB for a particular file, that file would not be listed when you were browsing your library. Even in the folder view. Not to mention all the things it labeled incorrectly.

At the time, multi-season shows had to be given specific names, put in folders a specific way, the folders had to be named a specific way, it was a hassle. Alternatively, the folder browser on the PS3 "just worked", and I didn't care about it looking pretty. The point is to stream content, not look at pretty menus.

It still does the bolded in library view unfortunately, but in folder view, everything shows up. You should try it out again, it's gotten a lot better.

you can now define which databases to go to (and in which order) if it isn't able to find something it still displays it, just with a generic box art and the file name as the title. It's also a billion times easier to fix incorrect matches than before with the new media manager we binterface.

i find with multiple databases it's a lot more accurate than before, so it's either right or not in the databases which is normally a year issue or a language translation.

i've never used the tv function.

Not if you view via the web browser. Just go to www.plex.tv in your PS4 web browser, log in, and BOOM! That's it.

How's the quality that way? I'm not getting great results trying to use my Fire TV Stick and really don't want to sub to Plex Pass (even though I really should since my gf is also streaming shows from my server). Does the web browser impact the playback or anything?

Depends on your network quality and whatnot, but I've never had any issues.

I'd like to, but I also don't want to have to pay to try it out. Outside of the library problems, there were issues I saw with playback too, but again, it was years ago.

I still really want to see a PS4-OS native solution, and from recent conversations it seems like they are working on it, I just worry that whatever they end up using will be not nearly as compatible as the PS3 was or locked down with DRM in some way.

Latest builds of PS3/Universal Media Server have gotten so unstable and unusable I'm just about ready to kick them to the curb.

Plex is free to use. It's just the Plex app that costs. Look at my post above on how to do it in the PS4 web browser.

Plex requires a computer to serve the media right?

If Plex could access the hard drive(s) I have connected directly to the router and serve from there it'd be great for me. Otherwise it's not worth the cost to have a computer running all day.

Yeah, Plex needs a PC. But I leave my HTPC running 24/7, so it's perfect for me

Forget Spotify, I want my Google Music collection/subscription supported!

and Rdio, Pandora, Last.FM, Amazon, Beats, iHeartRadio, Slacker, ......

They should really let all these companies create music apps and allow them to play in the background (just like iOS)

Who the hell actually requested DailyMotion uploading?

Ustream is there because that service is apparently very popular in Japan. Maybe DailyMotion is popular in some other country [India/Russia/etc]?

I would like automatic syncing of images [and optionally videos] with some cloud storage service, for example Dropbox.

I gotta keep banging the Plex drum here since apparently there's a fair number of people that don't know it exists. It's home network streaming and there's a native app for the PS4, no need to go through the browser.

You would be surprised how little many people care about DLNA, especially since:

1) Many people have another device that will do DLNA
2) A good amount of people have switched over to a superior system like PLEX

Plex wont help with people who want to stream music while playing games.

Speak for yourself, I've been asking for Spotify for years. What I thought would never happen, is now my main feature I'm looking forward to. I might even upgrade my sub now.

Why? It takes two seconds to put a new internal drive in?

2 seconds? My roommate did it (twice, actually). It was an all day procedure. I mean, yeah, physically sliding it into the bay is 2 seconds, but there's a little more to it than that.

Anyway, sounds like a great update.

I did it the day I got my PS4 and it took me, like, an hour..... Re-downloading your stuff would take the longest, but since backing up is in this update.....

Kinda off-topic but is there any* DLNA server/front-end that pulls the meta-data from imdb instead of tmdb?
Even the ones that make money on them like Plex cheap out and don't use that data...

*that works with PS3 and then PS4 once it finally gets DLNA support.

I wonder if they fixed that max audio volume issue for the PS Wireless 2.0 headset/Gold. Sounds that were supposed to play from the Dualshock 4 speaker would blow off your ears.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Well, that is just because he had to redownload the games he wanted. Put your new drive in at night, set what you want downloaded, put PS4 in Rest Mode, sleep, get up in the morning and everything should be there.

It is? It's not in the OP. Going to want to put a bigger HDD in my PS4 soon. Even though I go physical whenever possible, those download-only games do add up eventually.

There are screenshots from the leaked beta showing the backup and restore utility, and they probably haven't announced all the features for this update yet, so it's a decent chance.

I'm confused, where is it being backed up to?

An external HDD.

We already have trophy auto sync (if you have PS+)...now if your asking for immediate autosync the moment you unlock a trophy I doubt that will ever happen.
Pretty sure somebody said this was in the beta.

And other undocumented features.

You can already lengthen your About Me message by the way, but it's still shortened when viewing a profile until the SS update.

When can I get PS2 games playable on the Vita? This is the biggest offense to me. I literally bough a Vita thinking that this was going to be a reality and it hasn't been yet. There's nothing showing the Vita can't handle it so can we get this next please? Thanks
Vita most definitely can't emulate the PS2.

I know Dailymotion isn't as strict on copyright content so get alot of use in Asia at least

I don't think that's a "most requested list" at all. It's a "what xbox has" feature war list. I couldn't give a rats about png or even a local media player (Btw you can stream like DLNA for free from the plex website, only the plex app is subscription based on XB1/PS4). The actual most requested features are here

http://share.blog.us.playstation.com/ideas/popular/page/1/

And a bunch of them are in this update.

I wouldn't say a bunch. Going back through that website you provided:

1. Ability to change User ID
2. PS4 compatibility with g25 steering wheel
3. DualShock 4 compatibility for PS Vita Remote Play
4. Convert PSN Sub Account to Master Account
5. Enhance PS4 Video Support
6. Delete trophies with 0%
7. PS4 notifications for friends sign-on/offs
8. PS2 Classics on PS4
9. Arabic language and keyboard support
10. PS4 YouTube app
11. PS4: Pause and prioritize downloads
12. 3D Blu-ray Support on PS4
13. Quick PS4 game/chat invite
14. Display total time spent playing
15. Offline Trophies on PS4
16. Game gifting on PlayStation Store
17. Let PS3 friends see me on PS4
18. DLNA support
19. Option to put games in “folders”
20. Multiple accounts on PS Vita

Some of those hey already had but a lot is still missing. I don't even see suspend/resume as most requested on that website.

The only problem is that you kind of have to do it one by one. There is no option to say backup all saves for a particular game I believe.

You can do all saves for a particular game with a multi-select, but you can't multi-select multiple games, which is an option they REALLY need to add. To download / upload multiple saves to PS+ (or to USB), I have to do it on a game by game basis.

So the Resume feature works the same as clicking off your Vita or closing your 3DS? Awesome. About time consoles started doing the best thing about handhelds.

Oh really, Crap I'll keep that in mind when I upgrade the HDD. Thanks for the heads up as I didn't know it was that way even with it going to USB.
