WildStar |OT| The biggest MMO since the Big Bang

Wow, almost a month since this thread was last posted in.

Some updates from the Nexus Report today:

1. Late October/Early November for next drop.
2. No Shade's Eve.
3. No Christmas event.
4. Next drop is in January after the Oct/Nov one. This drop includes: training dungeon, daily dungeons, a new dungeon, new arena. Bugfixes and balance stuff, too.
5. Focus on accessibility. Renting mounts, things will be cheaper, etc. No dates/timeframes.
6. They are in talks about lowering the number of raiders in a raid. They hinted heavily at reducing the numbers.
7. Free trials will likely come once they release the megapatch with bug fixes and balancing issues (hinted at November/early December).

It sounded kind of sad. They literally said the line "this is why you should subscribe" and "you should stay subscribed" like 20 times. Reminded me of the $9.99 line from the WWE. The whole thing was Soon.

Oh, and Frost is leaving. Yikes. This is his last week.

Yeeeaahh, pretty dead.

No holiday events is pretty unfortunate. Game was really hurting for casual content and that was back in June. Sounds like they're finally realizing that their game can remain 'difficult' while being accessible. They probably found out too late though.

A lot of MMOs have had a renaissance with a transition to F2P, like Age of Conan, Aion, Rift, and the like, but Carbine has been understandably resistant to any such change.

No MMO but FFXIV has really turned things around after a tailspin while holding on to a subscription model without turning to F2P or folding, and that took a LONG time and a lot of resources to achieve.

No that's bribing (which, as we've seen oh so many times before including WS's launch, will not save a developer's game from doom).

And like I said in the other thread, if WoW can't bribe players to keep paying and playing, what chance does a new challenger have?

I can't wait till my PC build is done, really stoked to get into a new MMO! Haven't played one since vanilla WoW...
Hope people are still playing when I sign up!

Played this game for like 2 weeks and found it dreadfully boring. It's such a by the book mmo I lost interest pretty fast. The art is beautiful but man the world itself is boring. The final thing for me was no controller support, I'm sorry but all mmo's should offer this it's probably the biggest reason I stopped playing as I have difficulty playing mmo's with mouse and keyboard.

I don't disagree to be honest.

Kind of weird complaint since I see you play FFXIV which is equally a 'by the book' MMORPG. Straight from the school of WoW.

I still disagree with the bribing notion. Carbine misread the market (seriously so) and is trying to change direction. Will that be enough? Probably not.

Yeah, that game has plot armor.
I secretly like to thank Kazuya Niinou for his contributions, too.
:p

You're agreeing with me, you just haven't realized it.

Yeaaaah, controller support wouldn't work for the majority of them. It works for FF because FF literally plays as slow as molasses. There is no more plodding and by the book MMO than FF14.

Parts I agree with. Mostly the we already have WoW so why do we want to play your shitty not-WoW? This game was already made. The world didn't need "X, but now with flavor crystals" or whatever.

I think the general points that he's making are 1) you shouldn't design a game solely by focus testing and 2) what people say they want and what people actually want/actually do are different things. But...

If WildStar was focused tested into failure, it was done so with Elitist Jerks type people at the helm, not casual people that the pivot is aimed at. WildStar was a check the box dick punching MMO. Attunements? You got them. Arduous keying quest chains which require a large amount of time, in game money and materials, rep grinds, and world boss kills? You got them. 40 man raids? You got them. Raids that require execution to be so perfect that most raid groups are doomed to wiping for weeks on end? You've got them.

The pivot isn't solely based on what people say they want. Their recent discussions about the game refer to hard data of actual interactions people have in the game. That people log in for far shorter amounts of time than the team thought they would. That people interact with far fewer people in game than assumed. That the content people actually do isn't the 20/40 man raids. In the coffee example, this isn't people saying they like a bold, dark roast - this is people buying the shitty, milky coffee. What people said they wanted created WildStar. What people actually are doing is what's causing the change in direction.

WildStar at release was the mistake here. The pivot wasn't. Fixing something is bribing people. Is that enough to fix WildStar? No, probably not, because it shouldn't have existed as a product to begin with.

That video requires two things from my previous posts: 1, that what has been gamer bribery in the past is now used in just the same way here, and that 2, there is no correllation that bribing the playerbase has ever been a ticket to subscriptionville for an MMO.

I knew the latter before was true, but now my suspicions of the hardcore endgame also were prayers to a non-existant god are nearly confirmed as well. ie, Wildstar was probably doomed either way. Don't believe me? Check subscriptions everywhere, especially those that launch exactly like you say work.

FFXIV is an aberration, WoW will keep shrinking after WoD's launch, WS will bribe to deaf ears (changing the game for who still play to something different), and people will continue to call for ease, action combat, and player-generated worlds but until it's found to actually feed the bulldog of stable-to-growing subs and engaugement, it's all Damn Fine Coffee.

I will say that data (for a tangent) was interesting, as "raiding" as it was known then is not something one would do so intensely; it's not that even in other no-responsibility PvE MMOs (just replace "can't yet" with "standing around bored"). I wonder what that really meant...

Was having lots of fun leveling up until about 40, now I'm starting to get a bit bored. Signed up for Paradoxical maybe a few days after I started playing, but no acceptance or response so far. Hope to get in the guild soon, and maybe having some fun with other people will rekindle my enjoyment.

I hope the game can make a turn around, it's sad to see it in this state. I know almost all mmo's cut their staff after launch, but Carbine has lost big names, and not just one, but a handful of em.

After playing my free 30 days, I realized Carbine was what I truly loved about Wildstar. The passion from the devs was infectious and got me so excited for release. Once the launch hype was gone, I found myself having to force myself to login. There was a really good game in Wildstar, but it was buried under a lot of poor game design decisions.

Joystiq Interview

I wanted the game to succeed so I'd be subscribing to this after watching my friends get hooked after a few successful months, instead of heading back to Warlords of Draenor.

It's sad to see that the developers don't even acknowledge their mistakes in interviews. Somebody in the comments section mentions that they should own up to the failures like FFXIV and come back with a retooled game, and I definitely agree. How long until NCSoft just shuts it all down? "Hundreds of thousands of players" sounds like they probably have just about 200k players.

I'm kind of pissed I bought this game. Never really played after I played the beta. Some cool art / design, but it felt like a chore to play. Especially on my lap top. This should be f2p

Mostly sucks because the actual gameplay is still top notch, it's the rest that sucks. Mostly I had 0 reason to play the game besides raids.

I had to quit because every time they did an update the game would perform worse and worse and worse even on the lowest settings.

Game went from playing at 60 fps in winter beta, to 15fps with my game locking up randomly every 20 seconds for 2 seconds. I was doing end game raiding too had to stop :l

Formated my pc did a fresh install of everything and it still happened.

So the game is completely dead at this point? Kind of a shame, loved the art style of the game and the theme.

I thought it was OK, but it ran like a hog on my i7-4790s, 12 GB of RAM, and OC GTX 660. Turned me off getting ~30 FPS with that build.

REVIVAL

I loved my month or so straight of playing Wildstar via several free week passes. It gave me a chance to try out all of the classes a good deal. Is the GAF clan/clans completely dead? Or are there some people alive and kicking?

Edit: And I still have two free Week passes I never used that were given to me by the super awesome and generois Cmagus.

Quote this post if you're wanting one.

Looking to try a new MMO I tried both ESO and Wildstar this weekend. Have to say Wildstar won out. Way more polished. Superior theme and graphics. More options, better interface. Housing. I guess ESO is good if you want a more realistic graphical approach.

Anyone in a great guild they'd like to add me to?

I honestly believe a good B2P model would do this game wonders population wise, and from reading forums and news it could use a great pop boost, especially on the PvP servers.
I hate to see this game go by the wayside, but I think something needs to be done to get new and returning players back into the game.
Thoughts?

Started up a 10-day trial and I'm reminded why I really liked the game instantly. The style and all of the lore is just so good for me.

It's unfortunate I fell off from playing it though and it seems like the GAF guild is pretty much dead. Despite that I'm going to see if I can get back into things (and update those super useful add-ons) over the next few days.

Yea, I subbed too, after not even buying the game when it launched and I was a vocal person in the community with a podcast and what not. Did not like the route it was going once I got into Beta and that I was burned out from Themepark MMO's. Now I'm taking it easy and having a good time.

Should probably play some moer since wow tier is done. really good game with some really poor decisions at endgame :(

#Hardcore! Lol, but really they have done a 180 from what they were going for. Too bad they had such a bad first impression that it's really hurt the population of the game. It's growing slowly, but I don't think it's enough for it to stay P2P, and eventually transition to a B2P model like ESO.

Also, a lot of the addons have not been updated, so be careful I've been getting memory leaks from some.

It wasn't even necessarily that it was hardcore imo, it was that it was hardcore in the wrong ways. The dungeons were fun as fuck, the adventures had a lot of potential, but they were both too toxic to pug (which immediately kills a lot of the population) and then once you were raiding it was a pain to get apps because of that, and the punishments for failure in raid were usually a wipe. The first zone wasn't TOO bad, half the fights were honestly very forgiving and half weren't, but then to jump from 20-40 and go fight insanely overtuned bosses was just not feasible.

I had a shitload of fun on my Engineer though. One of the most well designed, active MMO classes I can remember.

Yea, I think the Telegraph action combat really hurts the 'pick up and play' type MMO's we see, because you actually have to pay attention to what your doing which can turn people away.
