The Cairn - ????
4b4c5c5fbf.gif

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=47692.0

The Cairn is a 2D adventure game that emulates the style of 15th century Dutch woodcuts, such as those made by Hans Holbein and Albrecht Dürer. The player takes the role of a skeletal child that emerges into a twisted world, populated by skeletons that have long since lost their sanity. It wasn't always like this.

Submerged - 2015 (PC, PS4, IOS, Android)

http://www.uppercut-games.com/submerged/

Submerged is an exploration adventure, where you struggle to save the life of your brother after escaping from a terrible past.
Trapped in an ancient, half-submerged city and desperate for supplies, you must explore the flooded streets in your simple fishing boat, and scale the ruined buildings that hold the promise of salvation.
There is a seductive serenity to this vast city, and even a beauty to its decay. But with every passing day, your brother grows weaker, and the memories of the events that drove you here continue to resurface.

Seriously. The gap between an alpha and a released game can be gargantuan. Or just one alpha version to a new updated version

This was the Ronin alpha a year ago
qd5shWt.gif

This was Rain World in 2013

In 2015

Yea, that does look quite different. Its really refined and polished now. I am extremely impressed with Legend of Guardians Alpha. It really looks and moves like what I saw of Hyperlight Drifter.

I guess this is what is roguelike. At least this alpha, there is permadeath, but you can earn money to get another life, its quite hard but, lots of fun. Seriously cool game. Love the gameplay, and random online players come in, to kill you. The 2d isometric sprites, are great, and there is really good collision detection.

All the games that I am getting into are alphas, I need to explore some others, but those ludumdare.com games that tend to be free won't work for me, get some whacky message about having to enable something, whcih I did. Still didn't work. Also it claimed firefox and IE don't have this issue, but it didn't work on either, exact same error message.

I dunno, this is a bootcamped macbook pro running windows, but everything has been smooth. Too sleepy to investigate.

Anyone have thoughts on Crawl, btw?

Anyone have thoughts on Crawl, btw?

Edit: Ignore the post below, I was looking up "Crawle" (turn based roguelike), instead of "Crawl" (Action roguelike-like/lite)

Here:
Survival game with enemies, dungeons and whatnot, but this game is SLOW. Most survival games tend to be and I am usually not that picky about this, but more durable items really would help this game a lot. It doesnt seem balanced around being able to survive with a single live, and once you die from hunger, thirst, sanity or whatnot, you just get spawned into the world again fully healed. This leads to the player just running off continuing the last activity he was working on without caring much about any of the sub systems. I was stuck in a pattern of "find log & stone, build tool, cut tree, continue building house, repeat, die" for 10 minutes now. This is not quite fun, but the basics of the game are in the right direction so if you like minimalistic survival games, this is still worth a look.

However, I highly recommend looking at UnrealWorld, which goes for a similar theme:
Survival roguelike that is in development for 22 years now. The game has a TON of features, and I just spent 2 hours with some easy wood working tasks (Cut tree to log, get branches of trees, cut log to ... all the while building me some basic wood tools, figuring out how to make a fire, roast some fish, find a water source, drink, and then continue working. I did not notice losing 2 hours to this just now and I'll spend some more on it now. It also manages to be not quite as alienating as other deep roguelikes because of its exhaustive in-game help. One of the best games I played this year, and according to our rules, I would be allowed to include it in our Indie Games GOTY voting, but 22 years seems a tad old, even though it has been redesigned a few times in the meantime.

Or a tad different, NEO Scavenger:

Technically those links are always in the first post of the Indie threads, but there is so much info in there, that barely anyone reads it :p

Anyway, glad to help! Plenty of awesome games in there that we hold dear to our small Indie hearts.

Nuclear Throne is an absolute blast!

It's really fun, but brutally difficult. Now I fully understand rogue like. The gameplay, though is so much fun. This is kinda what I am looking for. Still in early access, and perhaps a bit buggy. But this is a cool game.

Still, permadeath, and not keeping upgrades does make it a bit too hard! I do like to be able to beat the game, and I don't know if that is even doable with this game. I love this game, but if it was a bit easier in some way.

Generally, how long does it take for a game to make it from Alpha to full game? I really want the full Deadbolt game as soon as possible.

Thinking of checking out neoscavenger, but looking at Shadowrun Returns or Shadowrun Dragonfalls, as possible turn based games to check out. A bit confused between which one is meant to be better.

Nuclear Throne is excellent. Vlambeer are masters at creating satisfying mechanics

But it really isn't the best demonstration of a proper roguelike. You should check out ToME

That varies between games. Months, years.
Nuclear Throne was originally Wasteland Kings, released in 2013:

Shadowrun Returns or Dragonfall you can't really go wrong with. They are both really good at doing what they set out to do. I wish they were a bit more open world and less linear, but there are some mods that help with that and are available for either one I believe. Frozen Synapse is another turn based one you might be interested in if you haven't already gotten it. Desktop Dungeons is one of my personal favs in the turn based roguelike genre.

Sweet, was about to do another Valdis playthrough with a different character.

Also, I feel like I must defend Wings of Vi a bit. I think once you get used to the controls, it turns into a very good precision platformer with some very exciting and fun boss battles. It falls on the extreme side of punishing and is exceedingly difficult but once you get good at it or watch someone good playing it, it's polish and fun shine through.

It's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea but I had a blast with it.

Is the free version the same as the steam one?

Glad you posted this, looking at the very postive and no of reviews on steam i kinda wondered if it was one of those games you needed to give time to to get the most out of it. Sweet will defo look to give this another real go!!!

The free version is basically the full game without online functionalities. You dont need online functionalities though, even though they are a cool touch. You can easily spend 1000 hours in the free version, even without the DLC or the paid "online" version.

Might need to try again as well. I saw in videos that there seems to be an interesting game hidden here, but the movement/physics/platforming and combat mechanics were just incredibly offputting. I forced myself through the demo, but its really unfortunate that the game didnt leave any good impression or desire to get to the admittedly cool looking parts (Interest mechanics, challenging level design).

Don't know if this counts as an indie game, but I think so. It's a free game made by fans.

On May 12th we will release Zak McKracken Between Time and Space. This is the director's cut for the game we released in German in 2008, now with full English translation (including voice acting).

The German version was downloaded over half a million times and was critically acclaimed by critics and fans.

Coffee Stain continues to be awesome

That’s right. GoatZ is the latest DLC for Goat Simulator and it will be the only survival game on Steam that isn’t in Early Access!*

Features

-Mandatory crafting system because everyone else is doing it
-Zombies that bug out. There’s a pun here about actual living bugs, but we’re not going to bother
-You can craft anything in the world, as long as it’s one of the half dozen weapons in the game
-Zombies, because this is a zombie game, remember?
-A pretty big new map with some stuff in it
-Completely realistic survival mode where you have to eat every damn five minutes to survive because Dean Hall & Garry Newman said so

*not totally sure if this is even true, to be honest we didn’t bother to look it up. But it’s still pretty funny, right?

GoatZ will be released on May 7th on Steam as a DLC for Windows, Mac and Linux and will cost $4.99. It'll also be released the same day as a seperate app on iOS and Android for the same price.

GOG Galaxy is now in open Beta, and hopefully shaping up to be a competent Steam competitor: http://www.gog.com/galaxy

Still waiting for my invitation email, but as I mentioned for over a year now, I sure hope that a different service manages to challenge Steam due to several important reasons, and this is our best chance for now.

What does that storefront do differently that would make it a potential competitor to Steam?

I couldnt check it out yet, as I just said, but the big thing is being DRM free. For me its not about that majorly though, even though its part of the problem.
But the big reason for me rooting for it, is that its going to be much more open and less restrictive. Steam has taken up a very bad habit for bad practices over the past few years, and by now I would be very content with a Steam service carrying the same games and simply not being as destructive and tricking everyone into their own monetization hamster wheel, while simultaneously not giving a flying F about customer care.

This was the GOG Galaxy trailer:

Isn't that one of Steam's biggest issues now? Letting anything and everything onto Greenlight and the storefront? Greenlight is a cesspool now, not even worth wading through the shit to find the rare gem. It used to be so much better a year or two ago.

Steam fell from one extreme into the other. Steam wasnt great as the super restricted ecosystem it was 2-3 years ago, considering how many games people passed up just because they werent on Steam. I agree that the level of quality was MUCH higher back then, but Steam very much fostered a mindset in which players were subconsciously chained to Steam, so that people easily fell into the "I dont buy any game thats not on Steam" mindset (which I had back then as well). In fact, a big part of Steams success is due to the way of how it attaches people to it.

Due to that, a big part of the market/developers was left out cold. Opening up the store made perfect sense in that regard. However, the current "restriction" I am talking about isnt the games that are allowed on the store but a) DRM and b) the aforementioned Steam-only thinking, which tethers you to the features that Steam shoves in your face. GOG Galaxy (hopefully) plans to make every part of the social aspects optional, whereas Steam presses everyone into a buying/achievement/cards/market frenzy to maximize profits. Almost every feature in the past 2-3 years was only added to increase Steams mindshare and uses practices, which we despise in most F2P mobile games, that appeal to very basic reward mechanisms. On that regard, I am very proud of the Gaming community managing to revoke Steams introduced system for paid mods btw. The handling of it was similarly shady.

I really liked Steam when they actually put some effort into what they did for the community (most obviously the sale events with tasks, challenges and wins), but all of that went away. I mean just looking at the horrible support situation shows how much the Steam team cares about their customers. Steam basically IS PC gaming, and for that they are way too pushy and not careful enough how their own ideas affect the whole industry, so I applaud any actual independent competitor.

Now all we need is for gog galaxy to scan your steam account and allow a sync of steam games available on gog (obv you can only sync your steam account with one gog account :)

That would be great :)

OP impressions:

Sorcery 3
The best thing Inkle has made by far. Being on their previous release 80 Days, Sorcery 3 leaves behind the linear format of the other Sorcery games for a sprawling open world. You must cross the dead wasteland, and a vast array of choices and events and enemies await. Track down and kill the Seven Serpents. Time travel. Learn how to summon rock demons and goblins. Explore ancient tombs and the highest mountain peak. It all comes together through inkle's wonderful prose and myriad choices. On my first playthrough, I only killed one Serpent, learned about three of them, and overall I feel like I only scratched the surface

Crypt of the NecroDancer
Roguelike meets rhythm game. A brilliant genre hybrid that delivers on all fronts. Excellent soundtack, fast-paced strategic gameplay, a plethora of weapons, upgrades, characters, enemies. This is a must-play

A Knife Made Of Whispers
Another great game from Daniel Linssen. Carry a lantern around to light each level, however you can only attack enemies while you are within the lantern's circle of light. It's a solid action platformer with a slight puzzle element as you carry and throw your lantern to traverse levels and fight off enemies.

Are there any games out there kind of like Banished, but more like societal simulators? I suppose Tropico would kind of fall into the category I'm talking about, as well as Papers, Please.

I was looking at Cities: Skylines and I'm interested to try it out (when it ever goes on sale), but I noticed a distinct lack of people in it, or a sense of social groups at work in the city. In some previous games, they've had kind of superficial clique indicators - the external markers of citizens in this or that social group - but they haven't had real social mechanics...like a group of citizens overthrows the city government, and parts or the whole of the city take on a different aesthetic as they take over, and you can either support or stop them. Something like that. Or maybe, on a less warfare-oriented footing, groups of citizens demonstrating in the streets for this or that social cause, and it's not just a matter of increasing a happiness stat to get them to shut up - you have to negotiate with them.

If there were such a thing as a tribal simulator, that might be more like what I'm looking for: resource management mechanics like in Banished, but with an emphasis too on different cultural modes, maybe techs or perks, and warfare and/or trade with neighboring tribes.

RimWorld is all about establishing a self-sufficient colony with a huge focus on maintaining your group. To the extent that they have different emotions and individual interests, get old and suffer from age-related problems, etc. You can capture prisoners, establish trade with bandits, deal with members going insane or just being lazy, and more.

A bit too ... hardcore of a suggestion, but Victoria II (Grand strategy game) is notorious for its deep society and economy sub systems:
china-population-report.jpg

Basically, your country has different parts of the population that have needs you need to take care for, which in turn also decides their voting behaviour, ruling parties and the happiness in your country. It basically has everything you ask for, just not as a city builder, but more of a country political/economy simulator.

Tropico is the closest I can think of regarding city builders, because most City Builders do not try to take control away from you, which society/group mechanics often times do.

Chroma Squad is looking so good, and I mostly heard positive opinions about the game.

Played that during last years Gamescom, very fun to play, but I am a bit wary about paying 15$ for it. A bit of a case of style over substance, the core mechanics are really quite simple.

To chime into the GoG Galaxy chat - I've been in the alpha and now I guess it's over so I can talk about it.

It's pretty cool, very basic though - but that looks something that has been remedied in the beta update.

I hope it's a competitor to steam, but I think they're positioning it more as a companion rather than an alternative. Here's the link to some of the features Baddy if you weren't sure what it was about.

Environmental Station Alpha is on

I've put about 45 minutes into that now and I've got fairly positive early impressions of it. seems like a solidly competent lo-fi Metroid clone. It does a good job of capturing the open world exploration of the early Metroid games for sure, their is a constant strong 'where do I go next?' element that a lot of other self-claimed Metroid or Metroidvania games often fail to capture, which is good. The only things to be aware of if you are interested is that it is a Metroid clone with a capital M, 80% of the enemies are carbon copies of Metroid foes and I've just gone through a fire based area where my life drains constantly. Also, not sure how long it is but it might be less then 2 hours through (but that is just a random prediction, might be completely wrong.)

But yeah, I can say it is likely worth it if you like being lost and shooting aliens.

Two hours is likely an underestimation. The RPS reviewer completed 39% of the game after "many, many hours"

And to be fair, the game being a Metroid clone is really only an apparent negative if you've played Metroid.

I haven't

Sounds ace

Nothing wrong with creating a good clone of a good game IMO

Obv if it's a carbon copy then thats a different story.

I do hope so, it is just the early nature of the game is shoving me around set piece areas with such a rate (often less then 3-5 minutes before I am facing totally new circumstances) it is hard to believe that the game isn't going to burn itself out after a very limited amount of time. Although my save file is sitting at 15% after about 50 minutes or so which suggests that their might be a level of game I haven't even encountered yet which would be very awesome.
