I am not the biggest fan of Metal Gear at all, as despite owning all four of the mainline numbered tittles across my Vita and PS3.....none of them clicked with me :l. I either get frustrated by the stealth elements or just find the story to be confusing (though I started with MGS4 and worked backwards.....not the smartest thing to do even if I only played that for a hour or two :l).

But, when I heard this games soundtrack and saw its gameplay, I wanted to play this badly :D! Who doesn't love playing games with ninja's killing things? What about cyborg ninjas?! I don't know, the whole concept of Rising was amazing on paper and it is awesome that Platinum finished the game up in 2013, leading it into becoming one of that years best games.

I never got it though, as the Metal Gear name pushed me away from picking it up, but after find the game in a Five Below (a dollar store that sells all kinds of expensive products (headphones, games, ect) for 1-5 bucks :D), I had to pick it up :).

A week later and half way though.....I love this game :'). The combat is just amazing and it is perfect for me; someone who enjoyed the God of War series and the DMC reboot but had issues playing DMC3. Hidden depth but the systems on a face level feeling very simple; two attack buttons, a block attack with the square button + analog flick, blade mode with L1, and a new set of attacks with Ninja Run activated (holding down R1 and pressing square or triangle). This compounded with other weapons to use from fallen bosses and guns (even the trademark MGS Box XD) and some great controls leads to a fun game with a very accessible combat system :).

The story so far is outstanding XD! It is a satire on the craziness you see in traditional MGS games and it is just amazing for doing that :). Ridien having a robot dog, him cutting everyone up like nothing, his partners being enjoyable characters and the bosses having great personalities really help make this story so much fun. As a fan of the Sonic series, it also helps that the main character having the main character being VA'd by the original VA for Silver the Hedgehog is also very surreal XD.

The music.....I will just post a few examples. It felts amazing well in the game with the combat and boss fights are dynamic to the music (lyrics kicking in and the music getting louder when a big event happens), allowing it to feel 'alive' and tell the story of the bosses and Ridien himself. Something really affective I think :).

Overall, I love this game and I am really happy that I finally gave it a shot after holding out on it for so long :).

Also, I plan on giving the MGS series a second shot, as I want to honor Kojima's work to the series in the aftermath of the situation with Konami, so I will give the series a fair shot too :D. Maybe MGS 4 will explain some of the craziness in this game (as that comes before this game) :).

It's my favourite game of all time. I've bought it about 5 times (PS3, PS3 Steelbook (Sexy silver art edition), Plasma Lamp Edition, Limited Edition & Steam version) and I've loved every playthrough.
Also it has the best game soundtrack I have ever heard out side of the original MGS series and Kid Icarus Uprising. 'A Stranger I Remain' is my jam, so hype.

Amazing game, its incredible what PG accomplished with what they did in that short amount of dev time. I hope Konami gives the greenlight on PG to do MGR2. But I'm not holding my breath.

Mistral fight was the moment when the game really got me. I played it like two months ago and I was expecting some cheap spin off of MGS even if it was Platinum's. I was so wrong. Great use if MGS "lore" and great villains (their fights are better than B&B). Last boss was disappointing for me; a bit "too much".

Watched a couple of reviews for this on its first release, and kept up with a lot of the buzz about this on GAF. Probably one my very few gaming regrets that I haven't played this yet, but I only have a PS4 and a Macbook so I can't see it happening anytime soon.

I figured with all the remasters coming out, there may be a chance this could get a re-release on current gen, but with all the shit with Konami at the moment it seems very slim.

Kinda was underwhelming because the short development time really shows, but I'd be hyped for a sequel with proper development time. But now with kojima getting the axe I doubt there Will be a sequel.

Just when you think shit can't get realer, it always does.

Regarding your attempts at playing Metal Gear in general, starting from 4 is the worst possible way. Play them in release order on the easiest difficulty and just focus on making sense of the story. Presumably you have MGS1 on PSN, and the HD collection as well?

It was a very cool game with really awesome cutscenes and gameplay. I found the final boss to be extremely hard.

I'm more of a bayonetta guy,but the game was really good.
sadly my left stick was kinda faulty at the time,so i ended up getting some frustration since it' s needed to parry decently

incredible game, easily in my top 5 games, i must have played through it abut 20 times by now (the short length certain helps with that).

really hoping for a MGR 2, just imagine what they can do when given a decent amount of time to make the game.

Was mostly great. Then the boss fights came. They were annoying but game was still ok.

Then I had to beat the same bosses AGAIN and in a row. I uninstalled the game. Not worth the anger.

Yah, got MGS 1 on my Vita, alongside the HD Collection on my Vita too.

Playing it right now;

Picked up the PS3 cooy for € 5 a month ago and I'm having a blast. I'm in File 6 and fighting some cool guy. He's pretty strong though. Still can't parry properly :(

I finished it recently. The fighting mechanics were very good and clever-but other than that I didn't care for the story or music, etc. It was too corny for my taste.

I did love Raiden and Wolf though.

Awesome game.

Hoping that another will be made but I'm not hopeful given Konami's recent track record.

One of my favourite games ever. I played through it so many times. Awesome combat system, awesome bosses, awesome soundtrack.

Does not compute.

Say what? You the boss fights to be not as a good as the standard enemies?

Glad you finally gave the game a chance OP. Still among my favorite games of last (console) generation, and maybe ever. The way Konami's looking now, I'm sad that we might never see a part 2, but if the company's really moving away from gaming, I'm glad I at least got a glimpse at my dream cyborg ninja action game before they closed shop.

And for mainline MGS, like everyone else will tell you, release order first for the sake of understanding everything.

I thought it kinda sucked to be honest.

Why?

I want a sequel just to hear the soundtrack, and it saddens me that the Konami business might prevent from happening.

The use of music of this game is genius, and combined with the incredibly tight and satisfying combat, makes it a simply spectacular experience, absolutely sublime at times.

Yeah, it's one of my favourite action games of all time. I played it on ps3 originally mostly because of the metal gear name but couldn't get the hang of parrying so I stopped playing. However for some reason I came back to it months later with more knowledge on its systems and beat it just once.

Then when I saw it on sale on steam I had to pick it up, that lead to a 4 day period where I was waking up at 4-5 am and finishing one play through of the game each morning. I'm going to try finishing it on revengence one day but I'm scared of fighting
Armstrong
haha.

Rising is in my top 3 games of last generation, everything about it just clicked with me. I'd be far more excited about a sequel to it than I am for MGSV, which I want to get but have surprisingly little hype for. Platinum Games really needs another shot a tthe franchise and I for one really want to see Boris, Courtney, and Kevin again.

One of the best games of all time, my favorite action game of all time, and one of my top 10 games of the last generation. Everything about the game is just incredible. The music, the combat, the themes everything. Can't wait to see what Platinum does to Rising 2 with a full development cycle.

I found it boring and lack luster for the most part. Finished it but haven't thought of ever going back since. Glad you liked it though.
