Sorry if this has been posted already but anyone care to explain why a £160 R9 285 is getting better framerates than a £400 GTX780 / all of the 7xx series?

Have a GTX 760. Can't play for more then 2 minutes without it crashing. Got the latest video card drivers. No overclocks on anything. It's a weird crash also it doesn't error, it just sort of looks like I hit alt tab, and the background music still plays but it's totally unresponsive.

Tried many different settings. All settings to low, different stuff on and off. Still same problem.

Try switching to old drivers especially the pre GTA5-ready ones, that's how I got it to work for my GTX 970. The newest driver causes my PC to crash despite the graphic card barely reaching 70 Celsius.

FFS stop trying to convince me to go for a 60 FPS cap (as opposed to 30) by reducing foliage distance. Evil people.
Foliage distance is the killer. Anything above medium starts to get really heavy on resources. I'm just a fussy bastard though that I want it on high.

No, more upset that it seems Kepler's underperforming compared to Maxwell. (eg. 960 vs 780)
At least from what I've seen in benchmarks. I read a bit around the internet too in frustration and seems a lot of people are saying similar things even last year.

Kepler performance has certainly taken a hit. I have no idea how an R9 290 beats a 780 Ti in some of those benchmarks. Hell, a 780 Ti should exceed the 970 based purely on power without hairworks on and if not, at least equal it.

Kepler has definitely taken a back seat and it's disappointing as heck.

No it doesn't. Not with GameWorks on. To get 40+ with a single 970, you need to turn off HBAO+ and hair works. The chart represents 40+ targets. But with an SLI, you should certainly reach 60 fps at 1080p. Not sure what's going on there

I've got 60fps at 1080p with a single 970.

HBAO+ on
Hairworks off
All other PP on
Mix of high/ultra with shadows at medium.

put everything on high, turned stuff on except for hairworks and AA getting high 40s to 60 fps

think I'll just lock it to 30 since it never dropped below that so far but as it is I'm not really noticing any stuttering so meh, ge force expirinace is suggesting I'd put some stuff up to ultra, but nah, will probably hewer around 30 then with occasional dips bellow that

so overall stuff looks good and runs smooth, I'm happy ^^

that's just in white orchid so no idea if getting to the big zone will have any effect

No, but I'm curious to find out too. But even if I do, it might not necessarily be an honest answer.
So far, I've heard the game's tesselation-heavy and that Kepler isn't as good at tesselation.
I don't believe it though. I don't think the game even uses tesselation much at all. I don't believe Maxwell is necessarily better at tesselation than Kepler either.

Hairworks IS NOT worth the performance hit. I turned it off. Got another 20fps at 1440p

New shot of the same scene with some edited settings. The only thing off that I personally don't find worth it is hairworks.

R9 285 is no slouch. It's AMD's most advanced card on the market.

GCN continues to age gracefully.

I hope the message that pops up when your input method changes can be turned off in the future. The screenshots can sometimes capture before it shows up but usually not in my experience.

I got freezes that keeps playing the music every 20 mins or so seems in the cdr forums and gog that many people has the same issues its makes the game unplayable for me.
I can't play more then 30-40 minutes without the game just straight up locking up.

I know it's like a broken record in here with all the freezes but it's frustrating and i kind of want to just go buy the console version and play it and then play it on PC when it's fixed.

Agreed on the hairworks thing. Was getting a choppy 50-60fps with it turned on (GTX970, i5 4690k, 16GB ram), turned off its a rock solid 60fps with settings on high. I'll see what ultra does later on.

Stupid job, going to work making a living, wasting my time when I could be riding my digital horse.

Edit: does anyone know if it has settings for Dualshock 4 button prompts?

Hi this is a really basic question but how do you guys see FPS in games? Is it still by using FRAPS? Haven't been a PC gamer for a long time!

Or is there an in game setting which displays it on screen?

Sorry for the n00b question !

Fraps will work.

I personally prefer msi afterburner though add you can display more than just fps

Dissapointing results. When not crashing, I hover around 30 fps on High settings. PC is Windforce 670 OC and 3570K. Dissapointed how it's basically the PS4 version. I'll turn some things down and see if I can hit 60 fps. But I doubt I will.

I have a very similar rig and have similar FPS woes :/

I also kinda wish I'd just gone for the PS4 version for the convenience.

i'm not a hardcore performance freak but just coming in here to say so far all runs smooth enough on high/1920 x 1200/hairworks off with my R9 270/16GB RAM/i5 4460 X51.

glad i went PC over PS4 for this.

Pretty surprised this was running decent with a 2500k and 750 ti. Im not sure how long it will last. Not 60 FPS though and motion blur off.

will go out tomorrow and buy the ps4 version of the game, as I really want to play it. PC version doesn't work and god knows when it will get fixed

Anyone know if the game is possible to be installed on two computers at the same time using the same GOG code simultaneosly on different PCs. My bro just bought the game and we know it's possible to install and play the game without the GOG code but were wondering if it's possible to get all the DLCs and patches also on a second PC using the same code.

Might as well post this other benchmark I found, hairworks off and SSAO instead of HBAO+. Also worth noting my version at home says '1.02' in the menu, but on that benchmark it says it's the 'semi-final review build'.

How about lowering some settings with hairworks? I going to eventually get this game and was wondering what would be the best settings with hairworks and 4K/30 fps, especially since I have similar specs (4670K @ 4.5, MSI 290 @ 1007/1350, 8 GB Ram).

I think that my CPU overclock should help with Hairworks since I'm pretty sure that it my run on the CPU when equipped with an AMD GPU.

There is no way i guess that we are playing 4k at 30 fps with some hairwork. Hairworks just drops the ball on the these cards. even at 1080p it is not stable enough :)

Thanks for your impressions. I'm about to order a GTX 960, so it's nice to hear it'll run well. Were you getting those frame rates with HBAO+ enabled or disabled?

I've got 60fps at 1080p with a single 970.

HBAO+ on
Hairworks off
All other PP on
Mix of high/ultra with shadows at medium.

I have exactly this, but my shadows are on high or ultra I think. I also have CA, Vignetting, and sharpening off. It's completely locked at 60fps. I'm going to try turning settings up to ultra one by one and seeing where I start to see FPS dips.

We honestly don't know, yet. R9 285 performs better than expected (it's ~on par with the original Titan lol), Nvidia 7xx series performs terrible, while the rest (both AMD and Nvidia) performs pretty much like expected. Might be bad optimization for the 7xx series on either Nvidia's or CDR's part. Or Kepler is just shitty for this game (tesselation performance has been brought up before).

Not trying to be a jerk I'm just trying to understand the expectations with a previous gen card.

They usually last a little longer than this series. I had my 1GB 8800GT for like five years, only had my two 760s for a year and a half (still run BF4 at 144hz). It used to be that you could skip a generation with GPUs but I guess Nvidia is trying to clamp down on that.

Sorry to do this for you guys going for the performance hit without hairworks (which I slid into doing a few times too)... but damn it looks good:

http://a.pomf.se/kybpfg.webm

Even on Geralt imo, especially compared to without hairworks.

I may have to drop from 1440p to 1080p (already locked to 42 fps on a 780ti sc 4770K@4.4 - shadows and foliage distance to high.
But it would add so much aliasing and also make the vegetation basically unbearable.

Hmm what to do.

Maybe next gen or something, thanks nvidia.

Aaaand I've just got my second freeze. Again in a (in-engine) cutscene. There was nothing special happening. It just froze mid-scene. No stutters before, GPU/CPU temps were ok, and BAM! The game is not as stable as I first thought. Might want to wait for a few patches before playing this.

Uhm, a 670 is only a bit betetr than what's inside a PS4... not sure what you were expecting.

You're still probably getting better graphics settings (HBAO+, Better physics effects, better IQ) than a PS4, and although people are having crashing issueson PC, the PS4 is ALSO suffering from crashing issues.

So you decided wisely. Not sure why you think you should be able to max this game at 60 FPS, nor why you think going PS4 would have somehow, magically, meant the better option for you.

Or tech just changed. Rapid obsolescence is a well known risk in PC gaming and we can't blame companies every time they make a leap forward. Tessellation performance is a major step forward

I have a 4760k, 770 2gb, 8gb RAM.

Locked 30 on ultra with hair off and a couple things down (foliage, shadows) looks nice.

I haven't played many action third person PC games lately but seems like I play it better at locked 30 than turning things down to get to 60. Maybe I'm just slow in my old age.

Yeah you have to buy a card every year if you still want your $800 product to be supported properly by amd or nvidia the next year. Even more so if you go SLI.

Next gen consoles last nearly a decade.

It's disappointing, but what can you do. I was hoping my 780 Ti would last me a bit longer till Pascal hits.

I'm planning on doing another PC build with top-end SLI Pascal cards to get ready for VR next year.

My audio did not die, though. Right when the battle was about to start the game window was minimized, but I kept hearing audio as if the battle was playing out. After about 20 seconds the Witcher 3 process ended. To be more specific, this was the first battle against beasts after doing the tutorial part in the Witcher fort.

I had this exact same problem 3 times in a row!

Tried the newest drivers, the drivers that came just before these new ones and both had the problem.

i7 4770k
980gtx

:(

Also, it is just me or do the controls using a 360 game pad feel absolutely atrocious? Like... when you're standing still and start moving, it's sluggish but then all of a sudden it goes into this SUPER twitchy sprint that is really difficult to control. I kept falling off ledges during the opening tutorial on moving and climbing down ladders... just fell off the ledges an it wasn't on purpose.

Never experienced anything like it. W2 wasn't like that. Easily the worst feeling 3rd person controls I've ever seen.

That's a fair point. I just hope they release the Pascal soon so I can justify the upgrade, it's too late in this release cycle to bother doing it now. Seeing how my last cards have now turned out, there doesn't seem much point if new games will only work well with HBM, I wouldn't put it past them.

I'd like to know.
I don't have the knowledge to understand the workings of different architectures and even if I did, that doesn't mean I would have the information as to why the 960 is now outperforming the 780 despite the 780 having superior technical specs.
The only things I can think of is that Maxwell is better at doing something than Kepler (kinda what you're saying I guess) which is especially useful in Witcher 3 (this is what I'd like to know if it's the case) or the new drivers are simply just being updated with Maxwell in mind. I get the exact same performance from previous drivers in W3 as the new ones. Almost like it's the same driver for the Kepler GPU.

I've asked nVidia, hopefully they'll have an answer.
I see Techspot have an article on this same issue too so I'll check it out.

edit: now I'm seeing more benchmarks where Kepler seems to be more on-par with Maxwell with the 770 close to the 960 and the 780 Ti close to the 970.
I don't know what to think.

Actually, like I mentioned before, with a 2GB GTX 770, with hairworks off, Grass Density and Foliage Distance at High, and everything else on and at max, I get 30 to 60fps. I personally play it locked at 30 with v-sync. So I think the 700 series performs just fine.
