Halo splitscreen co-op RIP 2001-2015

What?! Noooooo!

Some of my fondest Halo memories were having a friend stay over co-oping Halo all night with pizza back around age 15. I am so bummed that 5 won't have local co-op. :(

Gotta sacrifice something for the visuals guys. If they had split screen and cut back the visuals, 343 would be copping shit for how the game looks.

Honestly though? What percentage of people split screens anymore? Its not 2001 anymore.

343 and Microsoft just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Halo culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame and especially SPLIT SCREEN COOP are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in other fps games where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Halo, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Halo public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Halo 5 for Xbox One, nor will they purchase any of 343i's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but 343i has alienated an entire market with this move.

343i, publicly apologize and put in SPLIT SCREEN COOP for Halo 5 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Shame. When I first saw H3 I thought it was lacking graphically. However then I realized how very rare 4 player local co-op was last gen. There are no other games I can think of that gen that did it as well as 3. And many of my mates enjoyed this feature a lot.

I can understand why they got rid of it technically but it's still a shame to see the fun of local coop pushed to the side.

Not a deal breaker to me since the only people I would play with have an Xbox One, although I understand those who are upset. Maybe it has something to do with performance/not wanting to downgrade?

Wow, short of a new Conker game, that's the last real reason I'd want an XO sunk then.

Playing these games with my fiancée was the thing I loved most about Halo. Bloody ridiculous thing to cut.

Wat?

Ugh this was literally the biggest reason I got into Halo so much. Something I could play with my older brother.

Guess I can wait and see on it even longer then

But the game is 60fps.

I'm certainly no expert but I've seen a lot of games manage just by cutting the frame-rate in half. Further to that you could have lower asset quality.

It's just a real shame.

That sucks. I loved playing through the old Halo's with a friend. Between this and no more 4 player local multi, Halo 5 has lost 2 of the main reasons I loved this series.

Fuck 343 if true. Bungie needs to take this back.

One of my most used features and what made Halo awesome.

Bungie doesn't know what the hell they're doing either. Design a game based on 3 player co-op. No split-screen options whatsoever.

you'd think that the more powerful the consoles get, the easier it should be to render multiple views at once. shows how fucked up the industry's priorities are.

It really is. Used to be a tradition for me to play split screen co-op games with family over the holidays for years. Now all we can do is take turns for most games. How backwards.

Really!? No split screen!? I always play split-screen with my sister and friends on all the Halos :( That is very disappointing.

So 2 player splitscreen for online and none for campaign?

4 player online coop for campaign?

Bit confused and my phone is being a nuisance.

It's okay, I don't like looking at my friends anyway. And they smell bad.

By the way guys, this is only campaign. 2 player split is available in MP.

When every game prior had 4-player split screen, that there is a whole other issue. Granted it's better than nothing at all, but it's still weak as hell.

Ehh. Really?

ehhh, yeah? show me a list of console shooters that emphasized LAN and splitscreen functionality to anywhere near the same degree Halo did. it was one of the series defining features, and something you couldn't really expect to find anywhere else last gen, except for cod.

and now you can't expect to find it anywhere.

This is the result when graphics are far and away the most important thing to most gamers. Fuck.

yeeeeeeeep

except it doesn't have to even be the most important thing to most gamers

just most marketers

I'd love to see the numbers for how many people actually used the mode.

i'd wager the numbers are higher than you might think. after all, before halo 5, there were really only two major places to get your splitscreen FPS fix on consoles, and one of those places was halo.

Yeah, there's no need to compromise single player graphics. None, period. Just half the framerate and take down assets a notch or two. But this requires work, aka manpower, aka money to optimize. They must have figured in 2015, not enough people give a crap to make it worth it.

But 343 have figured a lot of things wrong about Halo in the 2010s.

Literally the main reason I considered Halo games (4 excluded) fun.

I've completed all of them (except 2 which I didn't play) with my friend, on legendary and with tons of beer of course.

Minecraft can do 4-player co-op! Why can't Halo 5!!

/s

Thankfully it's not a big deal to me, I don't think I've done co-op campaign on the same TV since.. I don't know when! Maybe Halo 2?

Being a grown-ass adult with a stupid job and [slightly less stupid] children, I only get to game at night [that's when I mostly get to game, mostly], so in reality I'd only get to co-op campaign with other buddies on Xbox live anyway.

Still, sad to see it go for people who still have IRL friends..

Domt affect me personally because all my friends dont come over to play video games like that anymore but I feel for the people who still do.

C'mon 343 :l

Basically yes.

No splitscreen in campaign, however there will be 4 player, drop-in/drop-out co-op which doesn't require gold.

There will be two player split screen in the multiplayer.

What the hell, 343.

I have played every single Halo with my brother, on release, in splitscreen co-op. Everytime it comes out, we set aside a few days to play through the campaign on all difficulties and then head online together.

Thanks a lot, 343, you ruined the one thing I have in common with my brother; couch co-oping a Halo game.

Nice, good trade-off IMO.

Hey, at least you can still go online w/ eachother and play MP.

Well there goes any reason for me to care about Halo 5. I literally only bought the MCC to local co-op with my wife through the series.

A friend of mine is going to be pissed... This is the main selling point for her with Halo games.

They should at least support two player splitscreen, even if they have to drop the framerate to 30fps.

This sucks, big time. My husband and I have played every single halo in split screen co-op so far..

Massively let down :(
