Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

I'm enjoying the optimism of all the people in this thread assuming that third-party publishers will approve their games for inclusion in this scheme. There is no incentive for them to do so.

This is crazy. As someone who never had a 360, I can virtually get two consoles for under the price of a PS4. If PS4 had backwards compatibility, I'd own one by now. Huge news!

Eh, We've already seen Fallout 3 and Rainbow Six 360 games thrown is as bundles

Also, the games in general aren't free

Company Discussion:
"Why should we make our old games BC?"
"Because you won't have to invest anything and you'll get long tail sales."

Consumer:
"OH, Game X is on sale for $10! Always wanted to play it! BOUGHT! Add it to the backlog..."

It's the Steam sales effect. It's the reason why Blizzard still makes the Diablo and Starcraft war chests available.

I've bought digital copies of games I owned discs for when they were sub $5 just for convenience sake. If the games work on my XBO I'll probably continue that practice.

I'm assuming that most will be approved and put on the digital store so you can buy them from yoour Xbox One.

COD? Activision gonna approve that? A yearly franchise with a "new home"? lol....

I can see Battlefield with EA, one of their execs said as much - bringing old titles to the EA Access Vault... but Activision?....good luck!!!

I'm guessing delisted games have no chance of being enabled?

OutRun 2 is still one of my most played XBLA games.

Or can Sega allow it to be BC, they just can't sell it anymore?

Most delisted games are tied up in legal hell. Doubt they could allow it to come to BC.

Unless they're planning on doing a remaster, I don't see why not. Gotta get them at least a few sales, with 0 effort or cost on their part.

Their games will be for sale on current gen system with no (?) work on their part. They'll be included in the list of "here's what's new on Xbox One this week." What's not to like?

There are plenty of indie developers spending time/money to port their games to PS4/Xbone as it is. Now it can be done for free (I think?).

Isn't this just like the Xbox to Xbox 360 BC? That was also a list, but look at how that turned out. Most of the games people wanted to play work.

Can someone explain this PGR 4 sound bug? I don't think I've ever experienced it and I've always installed that game.
Menu music stuttered, which happened in all cases. From memory (this is a LONG time ago, mind you) every so often, there would be stuttering engine (or environment) audio for a little while before it killed majority of sound in a race completely. Or all engine sound or something.

Might've only been for a few certain cars or something? Like I said, it was a while ago since I did it. And my PGR4 disc is cactus :(

I dunno...in this day and age, it seems to be a lot easier for a small group of loud people to petition companies. At the very least, I think you'll at least see companies being called to the carpet and forced to issue a reason why they won't allow it.

Xbox game compatibility on 360 seemed to be mostly down to if the game was compatible with their emulator and passed their QA. Even the ones that passed tended to have a lot of little issues.

This time around it seems to be based on allowing them to rehost their games recompiled for X64. I guess they're fairly confident in compatibility.

if it's on the approved games list... if the third party publisher agrees to it...

I just have a bad feeling about this now.

yeah, I wish the approval thing wasn't there. but i guess it must be necessary due to licensing...

I suspect there was something else at play, too. I have a JTAG 360 (been a LONG time since I used it) that has an unlocked BC system in there, and Rallisport Challenge 2 plays a LOT better than many of the games I've played that *did* get an official release. Something else was up, for sure.

You say the music happened in all cases, but did every Xbox have this bug? I have it installed on a modded 360 and a retail 360, definitely neither have any skipping.

Car shadows spaz out a lot on that game, though. Definitely not as bad as performance issues but it's distracting.

If the scheme were digital only I'd agree 100%, but the support for discs is the part I think publishers will be wary of. Consumers can pay for a digital version, or find a cheaper used copy (or a disc they already own) that the publisher stands to gain nothing from.

Would a publisher rather have you looking for something new to buy and play on your X1 or would they choose to let you play their old games in a way they are not likely to profit from?

This really isn't backwards compatibility. Not sure why people keep calling it that. It's more like cross buy honestly.

Hit the nail on the head. This feature isn't really killer since not every game will work and who knows about the potential emulation issues...360 it is! Will get another X1 when it drops to $200-250 with some games.

Yea if I can't play my old xbox 360 discs in my theoretical xbox one, then I do not consider this backwards compatibility.

I put a Wii disc in my Wii U, it transfers me to the Wii menu, and boom I'm in. This is backwards compatibility.

Microsoft does not own the licensing to all the content in all the games that were on Xbox 360.

The fact that a new version of a game needs to be downloaded for this to work means that Microsoft is running some process on it (and creating something"new")

That will be why they need the permission of the Publishers. Permission to modify the original code.

If you're going to claim that the games are ports, please post a source. Either someone from Microsoft or a technical teardown of one of the game files.

So far, everything anyone from MS has stated has been emulation. No official source has stated that these are ports, nor has there been any technical evidence shown to indicate a port.

More like permission to duplicate, as it sounds like what's happening is everything is running in separate VMs. It's the same reason why you need a license for every copy of an OS you run in a VM, even if they're all on the same hardware.

Copyright law sees them as distinct copies.

There's a bit of "proof" there in that the build tags/internal names of the titles having x64 in the string.

Aside from the big Xbox One user base that may decide to PURCHASE these third party titles for their Xbox One because now they are playable on the system?

The potential to MAKE MONEY and all you have to do is agree and say go for it, but yeah, NO THIRD party company is going to want to do something crazy like that.

Couldn't get my Mass Effect save to work without the DLC. My disc version of Banjo doesnt work either.

They updated the FAQ about Mass Effect btw

Q: Where is my DLC?

A: DLC will be supported when the program is launched to everyone, but during preview DLC will not be supported.

I wonder if game sharing will work with this...

I would bet on it. The system seems to treat them like any other xbox one game. The 360 VM is within each game

Have you watched the interview with the Xbox Platform guy? They're going to keep adding to the catalog of X360 games that they offer. Eventually they'll hit every significant game in the 360 library.

You can put a (compatible) 360 disc in your Xbox One and play it?

Isn't it more like...put a disc in your Xbox one, and then get a free download of the game?

I don't think the game is ever running off of the disc. Putting the disc in simply confirms you own it, allowing you to play the downloaded digital version. The XB1 isn't really running that disc. I don't know. I guess it doesn't matter that much. And if I'm wrong about how this is working let me know.

Still better than PS now, but they really need to improve the compatibility list. I didn't own a 360 and would love to play some of those games now.

It just seems like they went for the sexy headline with this feature. Catches your attention. But when you actually analyze what functionality yore getting, it's not nearly as cool as you thought. Still, applaud MS for the effort here. Better than ps now (even though it's run fine for me).

I just saw this on reddit...http://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/3a32xz/xbox_360_controllers_can_be_connected_to_a/.compact

Apparently you can connect Xbox 360 controllers to a Windows 10 PC (streaming Xbone) to use for couch coop.
Not confirmed, but this might support arcade wheels, rock band instruments, etc too.
Pretty cool!
