I’ve only ever played about 10 minutes of the first Shenmue, but I’m so damn happy for the fans of the series (and myself, because I WILL be backing and getting on board for this one). Shenmue’s been this enigmatic, unreachable holy grail for 14 years, I honestly never thought it would materialise.

And christ it's smashed those goals! So is this now the fastest earning Kickstarter ever?

I feel like anything is possible now.

Phantasy Star V Kickstarter pls

Actually it's pretty damn hilarious that 2 months ago Konami cancelled Silent Hills, and by hilarious, I mean hilariously ironic and depressing.

Do we think it's going to taper off real quick now? Have all the hardcore fans already contributed?
we'll see once it reaches 4 million. the stretch goals beyond that might keep pushing the funding.

it's not hardcore fans though, some people who've never played shenmue before have been funding this which is very interesting.

Given the way Sega was pumping out lowered budget titles in the Altered Beast, Nights, Golden Axe, and Sonic series in the mid to late 2000's, I always felt like Shenmue could have come back if Yu Suzuki would have agreed to massively scale back or change what the series was about.

It sounds like he intends on making Shenmue the way he envisions it or not at all. I have to say I admire the guy for his determination.

But can he make Shenmue the way he wants to with a limited budget?

(Of course he can, he managed to use a military chip to power Virtua Fighter 2)

If only SEGA saved that $20 million+ for their emergency Shenmue 3 fund instead of splashing it on Shenmue Online :<

They really need to announce new stretch goals that will make the biggest impact on the most amount of people.

Getting Sega to agree to release HD versions is not in the realm of possibility for a stretch goal, and I hope people realize that. Sega may realize, however, that demand may be strong enough to do their own KS for a I + II remaster (or even just HD release). I would chip in a shit ton, and I own 4 copies of the original 2 games. Especially if data from I + II could carry over to III.

More areas, more NPCs, more retro games, etc should all be feasible, however. I would up my pledge if I knew that Super Hang-On, G-Loc and other classic Yu Suzuki games would be featured in an arcade or at a hostel where they end up (talking hypothetically).

Other than that, what does everyone want to see?

This game NEED to reach $15 million so we can get the FULL Shenmue game that you and I expect... and a physical copy. Shenmue is a COLLECTORS game, Sony need to understand that.

I dont get why SEGA never killed off the Sonic IP and stopped wasting their money in that pit of death. Should of dumped all their money on Shenmue PS2 port and Sh3nmu.

We could of had Shenmue 5 by now and the VRShenmue next year.

Sonic used to print money. When they make quality games, they still do.

But, I get your sarcasm and your point. I hope Suzuki doesn't compromise his vision to cram everything into this game. If there is enough interest and the game is as good as I + II, there is no reason to cut it short. Flesh it out and let the story develop methodically. :)

Yu Suzuki from just last year;

“Yes indeed, the story is far away from being completed and to be honest, I do not think that it’s possible to end it during Shenmue III. If I had to do it my way, players would experience the ending during Shenmue V. But that seems to be a lot so I’m going to try to finish it within the next 2 games.”

So at least 2 games left.

I m not sure how I would feel about a HD remake KS.

Doing a KS for Shenmue 3 to check how much demand there is? Awesome.

Doing a KS for a HD remake of series for which there is MASSIVE demand as shown by the Shenmue 3 KS? Sega would be stupid not to fund it themselves and start working on it.

Why fund it themselves when they can fund it through guaranteed sales? This is just preordering, only much further in advance, and in that it doesn't benefit a retailer, but the studio itself. I would contribute to an HD Remake/Remaster/Straight Port on Kickstarter to the tune of $100 if it looked like they weren't half-assing it, especially if the rewards were good (more retro games, fighting dojo to practice moves and play against characters VF style, etc.)

Well that's that. I didn't expect it, anyway. Nothing in the KS implies that this is reaching to be the finale.

What is Yuzo Koshiro up to these days, didn't he do the majority of Shenmue's soundtrack?

No, but he did score a lot of the in-game soundtrack, as well as put his touches on various parts of the score/soundtrack. He absolutely should be involved in this, though!

This is an interesting graph about the typical life of a kickstarter campaign. Not sure if it's been posted.

Sad, it looks like their ending push was massively cannibalized by Shenmue. Moreso since Playtonic specifically said they were very excited for E3 because of what wouldn't be announced (and now we know they were talking about how Rare isn't doing a competing platformer).

That's exactly what I would do. I would definitely wouldn't end it with Shenmue III.

Let's just hope there's no massive cliffhanger and the game sells enough to justify more!

Yeah, I feel like the video very clearly says that it isn't, even just referring to it as the next chapter in their story. Hopefully the game is enough of a success for us to see the story continue into at least one more game.

it seems he's planned this out a fair bit, the part when he mentions SEGA in particular.

“About Shenmue, Sega is not a problem at all. For Shenmue III, we need to define a specific budget and if I can gather enough for it, Sega will allow me to do it.”

So if he's sticking true to his word from last year we know he's already got a detailed budget down and that he has some of the funds at least secured.

Let's just hope there's no massive cliffhanger and the game sells enough to justify more!

Waiting another 15 years... It isn't to bad.

Let's get real for a minute: What corners can they realistically cut to bring down the budget without greatly impacting the experience?

- text dialog for less important characters?
- fewer interiors?
- less intricate AI?

Modern game development with new engines like Unreal 4 allow for a lot of great work to get done, much more cheaply compared to prior days. I doubt they are aiming for super high end AAA visuals and depth. But it would be nice.

Such an awesome experience. I always said Shenmue III would be the game that brought me into gaming hard.

So excited for this.

I demand Chapter 2 dlc. We deserve to see what happened on that ship.

Did you read the comic book strip in Shenmue 2? Someone from Shenmuedojo found Chai's model burried in some of the games files.

So..has anyone ever looked up the wiki to QTE's before?..How isn't this a meme?

Like, I've been reading up on Shenmue due to the announcement and I came to read about how its credited as having the first known QTE ever, which lead me to the wiki page that included a "mock up" of said event:
