Was Super Meat Boy ever available on disc? I def. played Super Meat Boy on my account with my console, but it is not showing up under ready to install for some reason. I'm pretty sure I bought it digitally

Wow, I somehow still have my steelbook PD: Zero. I forgot how terrible this game was. Never thought I would play it again in my lifetime. Pretty sure I tried to trade it it on multiple occasions, but no one would take it. lol

Also, is it the emulation or was the framerate always this atrocious? I'm pretty sure it dipped into the single digits during the firefight at the end of the first level. Coupled with the slow controls and motion blur, it was the first game in a long time that made me feel sick.

Question, are the games uprezzed in any way, or is it just running the exact, native version of the game? It doesn't matter to me either way, but I am pretty curious.

It's the native version. Game thinks it is running on 360. They are upscaled by the scaler of course, but not rendered at a higher res. Maybe they'll change that in the future once they are satisfied with compatibility

I previously compared it to VGS versus Bleem! and I think that comparison holds up

This is some next level black magic. How are they emulating a 3.2 ghz PPC on that slow netbook CPU? Are there any technical articles about this?

My guess-- they ported over the 360 APIs to XB1, and then for any custom low level machine language code, they're using CPU emulation. But its probably heavily customized per game to get as much speed as possible. There's no way they are doing full on 100% accurate CPU emulation. It's got to be mostly HLE.

Doing it on a game by game basis is gonna take a hell of a lot of work. Props to MS. They really didn't have any obligation to do this.

That's what I was expecting. Cool, can't wait to try it out.

It's a whole 360 VM, not ported APIs like WINE

I also don't believe it is frame accurate though Phil suggested otherwise

Still missing a couple games from my list.. not sure how to make them show up. Geo Wars Retro Evolved and the original Toy Soldiers...

Anyone able to get games to show up when they originally did not? I have "Re bought" online for free of course but was hoping that would trigger them but no go.

I tested two games: Mass Effect and Battleblock Theather. Mass Effect appears the same (maybe a slight better frame rate, specially if turn off motion blur and grain filter), and Battleblock look like a carbon copy.

Microsoft won E3 when they announced it I can play my 360 games on xbox one and its free.

Sony has not responded or has yet i hope they will because it will look bad if they continue charging people to stream PS3 games

Usually, I don't bother getting into who "won" E3... but believe me, 10 years from now, we'll still remember Sony's conference this year.

So I've tested 2 games, Perfect Dark and Alien Hominid HD.

I am very impressed.
No major issues, however I did have Perfect Dark freeze a couple of seconds at one point. But nothing major.

Now I'm just waiting for Gears of War Judgement and Red Dead Redemption to be added.

RDR might be awhile since they are still working on a solution for multi-disc games

That's because some of the games they announced will come out that year....

Sorry too tempting to let it go.

Has anyone tried any games from XBLA compilation discs?

I have Geo Wars on an XBLA Vol.1 disc, but am unsure of how it will work if the other games on the disc are not compatible (I forget what's on there).

Not got an XB1 yet, but still interested in how it works.

I seem to remember the games showing up mixed in with my Games library if the disc was inserted, but also launchable from a menu on the disc. It's been a while since I've played them.

The way those discs worked is they just showed up as installed games on your 360. So you could go directly to Games > My games and launch them from there.

Gonna assume in this case that your Xbox One will just recognize them like that and prompt you to download them separately.

How did you manage to get it to work, it didn't allow me to start the disc up or anything when I inserted mine. I have the latest preview build and everything.

Makes sense. Ta.

Kind of a shame that so many of the currently supported games are Rare titles.

I mean, it's great that the support is there, but I kind of want to hold off re-playing them with that Rare collection round the corner.

They said it is one emulator/vm for every game (unless issues appear) -- they are not doing game by game profiles like 360->xbox.

It's just a beta filled with first party titles

Are you in NA? Only NA discs work during the beta

Q: Why are my Disc based copies of approved games are not working?

A: Currently we are only supporting game disc’s from the North America region. We are working on making all games available via disc. This will be fully supported when the program launches for everyone.

I doubt anyone will remember MS's conference. Just because they dropped the tv gimmic and kinect does not mean they won in any stretch of immagination. Backward compatibility is pretty huge though.

The frame rate was quite bad on the 360 as well as I remember. The standards were not good back then. I tried Splinter Cell Double Agent again some time and holy tearing.

Correct. Phil went into a bunch of details on GB last night, but it is one emulator. The game itself thinks it is running on the 360 which is why you see the 360 boot screen. The XBO thinks that a game is playing which is why you can still do DVR, Screenshots and stream.

Really cool deep dive on how they did it last night.

Sadly, no. The XBLA compilation disc doesn't work - tried it last night (the one with Wik, Hexic, GeoWars, etc.). And from what I remember, you couldn't do that with the first XBLA compilation disc, you actually had to run the disc which had a separate launcher which then could boot each game individually. Unless they updated it at some point with a patch, haven't played it in years.

--

Tested out Mass Effect last night. Load times are improved considerably, and there is little to no texture pop-in, either. Both things I had issues with in the Xbox 360 version. So it looks like running it off the hard disc is improving things vs running off a disc. Didn't have time to check out running the game on 360 HDD vs Xbox One, though. Just compared streaming off the disc on 360 to Xbox One emulation.

Bummer... still, plenty of time for them to come up with a method. Hell, they may at some point add compatibility for the entire disc as well as the individual games.

Thanks for checking it out, though.

I am in the UK, my disc version of mass effect works without any problems, perfect dark zero doesn't. Really weird you mentioned that as I fought all discs would work.

Also, for those Xbox One owners that don't have any 360 games on the list and are in the preview program and want to test out the backwards compatibility feature, Hexic HD is available for free on Xbox.com or through the Xbox 360 dashboard. Grabbing that should make it available in your "Ready to Install" list on the Xbox One.

Two of those games are already late 2017 at the earliest. That is so far out. If they are progressing along we will see them at two more E3s. TLG is allegedly 2016.

And with that timeframe BC is bigger deal to me due to games I've never played or really liked within the 360 catalog that are priced really cheap.

....FF7, Last Guardian and Shenmue won the conference, those 3 announcements (honestly just FF7 and Shenmue alone) completely sucked the air out of everything else.

For those wanting to understand how BC is working start watching here on the GB Live video.

Spencer goes into detail on the thought process behind it and the tech:

https://youtu.be/Pjh1Uo_xaSQ?list=PLfFwi0VxVnVLFxiEgcwWD5PbVcacKCk_t&t=11257

I was just about to post this. Some interesting tidbits:

-Runs full Xbox 360 OS, so the game thinks it's running on a 360

-Xbox One thinks it's just running a Xbox One game, which is why all the Xbox One features still work

-No custom wrappers/shims between different games like the Xbox to Xbox 360 emulation. That is not the approach they are taking this time because it wasn't scalable. It is the same emulator running exactly the same way for each game. Aside from QA, there's little to no extra work required on Microsoft's part to get the game running after a publisher OK's the title for BC.

-Kinect games cannot work

-They are working on Multi-Disc games like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, takes a little extra work because of the way multi-disc games are packaged

PDZ ran like shit. You didn't notice back then but going back to it after a while it felt horrible.
