Big time bummer, as I pretty much only buy physical games. I dropped $150 on Bloodstained for the physical copy and goodies, and would love to support Shenmue on PS4, but not if I'm forced to go digital.

Guess I'll wait and hope.

as a big retro GAF gamer, i totally understand/empathize with your point here, and did the same with bloodstained. i often revisit titles from decades gone, and very much cherish not having my access restricted.

but i do make exceptions when i love the franchise and am left no other recourse: i got Phoenix 5 despite not liking nintendo's account system. i'm supporting Yakuza 5 day 1 because i want to see Zero make it over (ill likely import the JP copy, its cheap right now). if no PS4 physical shows up? ill get the physical for PC and just download/likely play it on PS4.

to each their own, and i don't mean to knock your similar values - but if its digital or nothing, and i really love the series, i'll make peace with it, however begrudgingly.

I think people is going to be surprised how much the game is going to get the last days of the campaign, not sure if 10 million is possible, but at least 6 I think it is.
Even at current rate 6m is happening so we are getting all the core improvements Yu wanted to do, now what lies beyond 5 million? Possibility!

He mentioned bringing back the forklift! That may be stretch goal for 8-10mil though as I'm guessing 5-8 is going to be based around more core gameplay.

I haven't yet played Yakuza and I am thinking about playing one of the games to tide me over until holiday season (where I can further be distracted from waiting for Shenmue).

It looks really cool, I see a lot of walking around a modern day Japanese city in the Giantbomb quick look. Can I start in medias or should I start with Yakuza 1?

Not sure how I havent noticed this yet.. sup with Ryo's face ?

yeah...fortunately, suzuki said that's not what he'll look like!

Maybe Microsoft got its act together after seeing that the game wasn't just their most requested but that the hype is real.

one can only hope...but think of all the narratives that'd have to change!

Yakuza 3 and 4 both come with a summary. Western version of 3 is chopped, 4 is nice. You can play them all if you like but start from 4. Also 5 is getting localised soon.

i forget, didn't 2 bring a catchup video as well? 4 is an excellent jump-on (and my perosnal favorite!) but 2 is sooo good, sucks that it's jumped up in price. i wanna say it's not on PSN which is also a shame.

I'm similar in that I only buy digital if absolutely necessary, but I made an oath this year to stop being weak and supporting a format which I find insulting to the consumer. My solution in Yakuza 5's case was simply to import the game (which I've also done with the two on PS4), but I have some working knowledge of Japanese, so I can afford to do so and still enjoy the game.

Shenmue III is different, though, because it's on Kickstarter, and you aren't really buying anything, but rather supporting the creation of something and I'm absolutely for the creation of the final chapter of Shenmue! I'm not sure what's stronger at this point: my desire for a new Shenmue or my push back against forced digital. Hopefully it'll be a moot point and they'll announce a physical PS4 stretch goal. :p

Not sue if they would have much to do with it, more a case of Ys Net looking to increase the number of backers. Of course it could refer to Linux/Mac too but X1 would be more realistic.

Probably. Yes 2 is also excellent but the PS3 games are easier to get hold of and play so as you said I consider 4 to be a great jump in point. If only the HD releases made it to the west.

I've added some advertisement to my Steam page!

gyt3got.png

http://steamcommunity.com/id/tbwmaxi

The quality is a bit rough due to it being a preview of a gif but at least it is one more outlet to advertise on.

I really need to go back and play the Yakuza games as they are fantastic and feel unique in a way Shenmue did. They are also pretty dumb (in a good way) when it comes to some of the quests and story lines.

Is there really not going to be a physical version for PS4?

It's still early days - it might still happen further down the road. If we don't get it I'm positive Shenmue fans will vote from a selection of covers and then make it the official cover for a physical box of some sort.

There were people threatening to back out of bloodstained if it got a WiiU version. Nothing is impossible.

Ugh.

It should be able to bank a good 1.5 million in the last few days.

O_O'

and still no one has even bothered to update the kickstarter page.
Management of that page could/should be better, I agree.

Seems like the whole "10 Million for an open-world" bit is confusing some people, e.g. from the KS comments section :

LET'S GET THIS TO 4 MILL TODAY !!!!!! FOR A NEW STRETCH GOAL I KNOW 10 MILL IS
"OPEN WORLD" so like fallout 4 and gta 5

Yu confirmed this himself.

hope we get an update today. though i have to wonder if they're just waiting to get the new tiers and rewards in order before they do anything else.

the additions to the FAQ are nice though.

Linux/Mac are actually much easier and cheaper to do than X1 considering this is UE4. X1 would still be easy to do, but Microsoft is the largest hurdle to get over there. But yes, more versions are an investment, and usually drive lots of people on KS, and at the very least stop smear campaigns from irrational platform fans.

To be fair, people were concerned about how it would be a resource sink since the engine doesn't actually support the WiiU so great effort would need to be invested and potentially affect other versions of the game, but did so in a completely irrational manner and didn't fully stop even when they showed that a different studio would do the WiiU port.

Shenmue 2 was the only og xbox game I didn't get rid of and now I can't find it :-(

Will have to look round my parents attic next time I visit because I don't remember what became of my Dremcast and Shenmue 1 & 2 either.

EDIT: Looks like the Kickstarter page has acknowledged they've hit the $3.5m target now, Hopefully they'll start giving a bit more information on the other goals

Yu should've said $10m for a full FREE experience.
Might've helped with some of this... confusion.

Funny thing about Yakuza, I was so mad the Dreamcast died and that series started on the PS2 that I boycotted the first two hahaha.
I've got 3 and 4 though.
Haven't finished 3 or started 4, forgive me!

"Why am I donating, if it hits 10 million it will be Free"

Not that much better lol.....you know how people read this stuff!

I have a song I associate with Shenmue...but it is not from Shenmue I don't think...and I don't know where it's from.

-goes on a hunt-

The $2 Million target was to ensure we get something released. I would prefer Yu finishes off the main saga in all honesty and would probably mean the $10 million is raised.

Heh:
Puuuuuuuush
Yeah their projection is in line with what I had in mind. We'll see what we can achieve. Keep up the good fight guys, and remember, stop the conspiracy prosecution anti-game press stuff and focus on positive promotion of the game and explaining why the KS is important more Guilin tour posts and stories from people about why the game is important!

I am not complaining. More people seeing it is good. Maybe we can drop all the 'OH NO WE ARE NEVER GOING TO MAKE IT! THE CAMPAIGN IS RUINED!!!!' and get back on track with the excitement! Things have finally settled down thankfully and I just googled the game and the negative stuff is finally pushed off the Google top page.

I agree with this. It's time to ignore the negativity and just focus on why Shenmue is so awesome and how we can raise as much money possible. Because you know what? People actually replying to shitty posts is getting just as annoying as the trolls themselves. Less arguing and more brainstorming/money throwing!

yes yes yes.

more positivity and more fund boosting efforts.

we're getting shenmue 3. we're actually getting something we've all wanted to much for almost two decades.

The team running the page has been quiet for a little while, fingers crossed a big update is on the way.

I sure hope so. I've seen the updates to the FAQ questions popping up, so they have definitely been monitoring the page, at the very least. By now, they also have to understand via the flood of messages/comments that the fans need more from this campaign (whether they react appropriately or not is anyone's guess, though).

If they could deliver an update today with new reward tiers, that would be good enough for me at least.

Thanks for the updates Ryo.

I expect this to be a 2018 title, and I realy hope they'll manage to get the English VA somehow. Ryo's VA seems to be on board, they only need to ask.

I've noticed some people not wanting Corey Marshall back but that's one of my biggest hopes. He is the voice of Ryo to me and I'd love to see him as Ryo again.

Yeah, absolutely!

I also would like to see Lisle Wilkerson come back as Xiuying (if she is in the game) even though I didn't care much for her Yuan or Joy.

Lastly (again, if in the game), I actually like Ren's voice actor, Eric Kelso, too. Funnily enough, he also did Gui Zhang (which was decent) and Fuku-san (which was hilariously awful).

I'll probably wont back this project since they don't offer a physical version of the game for PS4 as a reward and they reached their goal already.

They need about $10m for Yu to develop the type of game he really wants to make. $2m was the minimum goal for the most basic, story driven version of the game. A physical PS4 reward may come later, we don't know yet, but it's important to keep supporting the kickstarter!

I don't like the English voice acting at all, but as long as it gets more people on board and the Japanese version is there as an option, I'm all for it.
