Nintendo America Boss Teases Release of Smaller New 3DS

“So we’ve got nothing to announce here,” Fils-Aime told me as I told him that many Kotaku readers have been clamoring for the release of the smaller New 3DS in North America. “We’ve certainly taken note of all of the readers and consumers that expressed desire for the base model.”

That’s not much of a hint, right? Ah, but when I asked him why Nintendo of America hadn’t brought both New 3DS models to North America—the big “XL” one we have now and the smaller one with the changeable faceplates that we don’t have—he added:

“We analyzed the results in Japan and saw the lion’s share of the volume was on the XL model, and that’s with no 2DS existing in the Japanese market. And so as we thought about what’s the best line-up for us we thought the new XL and 2DS would be our best line-up. Not going to make any promises but, you know, I would suggest to your readers that they stay tuned and maybe some special SKUs might show up.”

Also:

There will eventually be more games made just for the New 3DS, Fils-Aime confirmed. “There are digital games coming out that are specific to New Nintendo 3DS.” Those download-only games are unannounced, for now.

Hmm... I'd be willing to go for a white 3DSmall model. Otherwise I'm perfectly happy with my New XL. I didn't think I would like it as much as I did, but it's pretty great.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them holding off some kind of supply for a holiday bundle. Depending on how that sells and how far off the portable aspect of NX is, I can see them deciding to make it a regularly stocked SKU while silently killing the 2DS.

I honestly can't really blame them for not doing it in the first place. You don't want too many models out there. I'm sure the fans would be all over it if they released it though.

The regular n3DS exists to sell faceplates, gimme gimme gimme. To be honest I am kinda glad they decided on only one model, made the almost impossible choice between the two easier for me, but if they are bringing the regular version along with the different facaplates... man...

Some special SKUs huh. My take is they may release some special edition regular N3DS models for certain game releases. Most likely they will be super limited. Doesn't seem like an official release is happening.

They got some digital N3DS only software coming huh? No retail? Hard to be excited about that.

I still haven't upgraded because none of the NXLs appeal to me, so while I'd welcome this, I can't imagine it would go over well with anyone who isn't a diehard fan.

I imagine that they're titles that don't have much of a prayer at retail. Xenoblade made sense because it's an active IP and had been long out of print on the Wii.

I prefer the larger form factor and bigger screens of the XL, but would prefer the button colors of the smaller unit. In a perfect world, I would be playing a white XL with the solid colored buttons with the Dreamcast theme playing in the back.

New 3DS micro, except it's just the New 3DS released everywhere else in the world, but it's exclusive to NA because we currently only have the XL and since it's smaller, it has micro in the name.

Wouldn't surprise me if they did this.

I guess that's it, we won't get more N3DS-exclusives from Nintendo, if he's using the Unity card like it's such a big deal.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
The supply chain and stocking management is already shit for Amiibo, do people really think they are going to flood the market with even more plastic junk for a niche audience? Does anyone actually expect the myriad faceplates they want be readily available or even mass produced?

It ain't happening.

FACEPLATES!!! :O

We can import our data/street pass info just the same as changing memory cards, correct?

In regards to games being made for the New 3DS, I think the best way forward would be to make games work on both 3DS and New but make games Enhanced on the New 3DS. Like how Codename STEAM runs faster on Enemy turn or just more games to take advantage of the C-Stick. Reward those who have the New 3DS but don't exclude those with the standard.

In other words the same as how Nintendo handheld the Expansion pack for the N64, if people want the better experience they can get it on the New 3DS.
