Man I would just love if a rich Shenmue fan throws a million or two into into the Kickstarter right before the end of the deadline. LOL

Has something like this ever happened in KickStarter?

Honestly thought maybe Megaman or Castlevani might have. Its such an old franchise , atleast someone who played it back then would have made it big now right?

Just hope Yu is doing all he can to get that PS4 disc version a reality, if 20k of those 29ers pledge 60, that alone would be 600k, it will really get things rocking, and especially with 30 on the 3rd, just hope they are being clever about it, and are timing it with that.

$5.5 Million: We'll hire bums off the street to do voices again.

$5.75 Million: We'll up the microphone sound quality from potato to 128 kbps!

Seriously though, I don't mind if they talk like they did in Shenmue 1 & 2. I just hope the sound quality improves.

i don't know if they have mentioned this
but they have to put in a "it's dark out and the lights are turning on" jingle + cutscene or no sale

So now that Corey is back, do we want the voice acting to improve or continue the schlock?
Better directing for the va will make it better, and frankly is a must...

The bad va in the originals is only (sort of) justifiable because of when the games were made.

hm...

that's interesting to think about actually. i'm sure that was a necessity of the technology at the time, but could probably be bypassed now. i wonder if they'll keep it for the sake of nostalgia.

PC physical copy tier has 4415 backers. Could perhaps expect a similar number for PS4, assuming that tier will happen. That's $135-260k depending on the new backer to pledge-upper ratio.

I don't know if it's even possible to pledge such nutty amounts through Kickstarter, but regardless, I'd imagine such a thing would be managed outside of Kickstarter.

I vote improve. Shenmue VO was objectively bad for the most part. While it's grown to be endearing to us fans, if we want that nostalgia trip we can just take it on Youtube. Higher quality acting, direction, translation etc. would be objectively better, and make a better introduction for those who didn't play the originals.

HEY HANDSOME LET ME TAKE YOUR PHOTOOO
That dopey ass voice burned itself into my memory. I think because I kept restarting after getting nothing but junk from the capsule machine.

i think with a proper voice director it will be fine
half the reason the dialog in shenmue is so stilted and awkward is it sounds like they took a series of literally translated sentences and recorded them all separately. and then strung them together to create the dialog

Does some of the kickstarter money for the Corey Marshall reward tier go into giving Corey Marshall some voice acting lessons?

Fantastic to see all of this positive momentum, hype and exciting good news! Awesome Japan are getting their shit together. Their latest update strongly hints that we'll have a physical PS4 version before the end of the week. Friday is going to be a monster with everything scheduled. We should smash through 4 million by the weekend.

i was trying to find that shenmue 3 petition from 2003 that gained a fair bit of steam (yu suzuki even said he'd seen it), but sadly petition online is no longer operating so i can't find out the numbers.

i do believe that we're heading over the amount of people who signed that petition. i think it topped out at 50,000, and that was probably with a few duplicate signings. crazy to think all that's changed since then, and that we're going to soundly beat that petition number with people who are willing to pay for the game up front!

That was me! I created that petition way back in 2003. :) I used my games journalism connections at the time to heavily promote it and it rocketed to 20K signatures which is when Yu Suzuki saw it. A Sega rep actually emailed me to say that Yu had acknowledged the petition and appreciated the overwhelming fan demand for the game. The petition finished with 65K signatures. I'd guess that should be the final backer amount too or within that region. Pledges however are worth far more than signatures so this Kickstarter is more powerful than the petition ever was.

Looking forward to monitoring the campaign for the rest of the week. Hopefully we'll get a storm of new rewards including the physical PS4 version before Friday.

Is it expensive to have physical PS4 games done say from a KS? Like is it even viable to do or takes too much $$?

That's what I'm worried about. Is it worth it to make the physical disc? Are most of the funds earned from the backers who go for it just going to go right back into producing those discs instead of the development budget for the game itself?

Look at Metal Gear Solid. Everyone loves David Hayter's performance in that, but hates it in Peace Walker. I can't remember what it was (very sorry, having a mindblank), but he very recently did a role that was basically the MGS1 Snake voice, and it sounded just as good as it always was.

Did you ever remember what this was? I'd be interested in checking it out. Movie, game, something else?

just under 4 hours left of 'today', on track to maybe break 20k today and hit 3.8 million, also 200+ backers.

Yeah I've been tracking the campaign too and the Corey Marshall news has given this a serious jolt. You search for Shenmue 3 on Twitter or Google and there's a storm of news posts about it. It has given us some positive momentum. Desperately needed too since the campaign was stalling. Friday will be an exciting day because there's so much planned for then; the 30 on the 3rd campaign, a Yu Suzuki Twitter Q&A, new promised reward tiers that should include a PS4 physical version.

Confident the momentum should continue through to the end of the week. 4 million should be reached soon.

I think XB1 port would help tremendously. As far as psychical goes, maybe they can calculate how much it would cost for backers and only do those numbers?

What's interesting about it to is that it doesn't seem to be the actual Corey Marshall message tier (which only has 3 backers), but just the confirmation of him being on board and the attention that's brought to it.

It all depends on what Sony agreed to help support the Kickstarter, i'd guess.

If their support is worth more than the influx of income they might get from an XB1 port then obviously they won't/shouldn't do it, but otherwise they should.

I must say, I find myself a bit bemused at this idea of "support" Sony are giving the project. Not from a port perspective (I have a PS4, i'll just get that version) but only intending to release it in English/Japanese initially and have other languages (including those spoken in places like South America) as stretch goals seemed strange.

I understand Sony not wanting to throw money at it, but surely if they were to be providing support and giving the project the best chance at succeeding, then they could have been a big help for localisation especially with Playstation being such a global brand and particularly in Europe which would have opened it up to more people from the beginning.

Obviously they went through most of those languages for subtitles pretty quickly, but was always a strange one for me and also somewhat limiting.

Not everyone has $1000 to spare. He probably won't have to record too many messages.

by the way, people who were asking if there is anybody famous who likes shenmue, we forgot about kavinsky!

apparently he's meeting cedric biscay in monaco again soon. i'm almost certain he knows about the kickstarter though.

He did name an album after a Yu Suzuki game. People should tweet at him and send him Facebook messages urging him to share the Shenmue Kickstarter.

I'm thinking that anyone rich enough to drop a million into a video game would just contact the developers directly instead to bypass giving kickstarter a fee, and also to actually count as an investor to get some return.

I don't think it will fail but what happens if Friday the 3rd does nothing for momentum? How much would we realistically be looking at by campaign end?

hard to say. why deal in theoreticals at this point though?

there's enough stuff coming in the pipeline to sustain the kickstarter through the end. who knowshow that'll go.
