That's poor form from Pachter. I wonder if in his head he thought "People are going to give me shit for all the shit I gave Iwata anyway, so let me preemptively deal with it" but still just poor, poor form.

this is so shocking and saddening. iwata brought a lot of joy to my life with the direction he took Nintendo.

Thank you for all of your contributions to gaming... thank you from the bottom of my heart. The industry and hobby and passion we all love and share would not be the same without you.

"Video games are meant to be just one thing. Fun. Fun for everyone!" - Satoru Iwata

Rest in peace.

RIP Iwata. I may not have agreed with some of the things he headed up at Nintendo but no matter where you stood everyone had to agree he seemed like a genuine person with a good heart. The world lost a great person but hopefully his memory and games he helped to create will stand the test of time and inspire new generations.

I just read that Iwata spent weeks to iron out the bugs so that Super Smash Bros. Melee could reach its intended release date. Amazing.

Whatever you think of his decision-making, the man put a human face on Nintendo, no small accomplishment. His enthusiasm for games and gaming was genuine. As so many have pointed out, Iwata came up through the ranks. Few suits understand games like one who made his name making them.

Goodbye, Mr. Iwata. We miss you terribly.

Out of all of the (incredible) tribute images so far, this has hit me the hardest. Nintendo games exist in brightest parts of human imagination - they push the buttons at the epicenter of fun, slide through our brains bringing a trail of creative whimsy in their wake. Seeing a picture of Kirby crying, or Mario with his head bowed still takes me to those vibrant worlds - a sadder continent to be sure, but in those vibrant worlds nonetheless.

This image, though... this is brick and stone. Metal and mortar. This is real. An actual human of finite longevity, of failing flesh and blood, will soon be laid to rest. Another incarnation of the man can't be programmed, another Iwata asks can never be held, and another direct with him will never be filmed.

Iwata's final credits are here, the closing coda on one of the most genuine and beloved characters the game of life ever programmed. Sure, we can replay Iwata's greatest moments, but we'll never get another new level.

So thank you, Satoru Iwata. Thank you for your integrity, thank you for your prowess, and most of all - thank you for leading us through the few bright spots Earth still has to offer. </3

Considering you have CEO's and the official twitters of competitors tweeting their condolences, I don't think people would've immediately jumped on Pacther just because he critiqued Iwata in the past. Doing it preemptively now is just a really bad look.

The press release in the OP says that he died from a bile duct growth.

He had surgery to remove it last year, which is why he missed E3 2014, but it apparently grew back.

Yeah. Presumably cancer. Bile duct cancer is difficult to eradicate because it's almost undetectable until it's too late. Surgery - even a full removal of the bile duct - might not be enough to prevent the spread of cancer.

What shocks me is how rapid the decline must have been. He seemed to be doing well the last few times we saw him. He didn't look like someone who had the typical, advanced cancer symptoms.

Well said.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
What a shitty feeling to know that one of the last things he has done as CEO is to apologize for Nintendo's E3. The man must have worked over the last months knowing that he was going to die. He didn't deserve to pass away on that note. :-(

I didn't even think it was that bad. :(
