I still remember when my dad got me a Snes and we played a little together. He died a few years later. This news really took me back and think about that day, and just my childhood with Mario.

😢

What are your thoughts on Morimoto being a possible "groomed heir" so to speak?

He comes from a similar background as Iwata, they've already "celebritized" him to an extent (he was a boss in Pokemon Black and White), and he's very young looking.

I could see it. I have no sense of him as a business man, but I'd bet he'd care about developers as an asset as much as Iwata did.

Hopefully he's been grooming a successor to at least carry on the idea.
After watching a bunch of E3 stuff, especially concerning Super Mario Maker, it seems they have plenty of people in top positions of the company that are all likeminded in this heart for games to remain foremost products of genuine passionate human creativity for the purpose of fun and inspiration.

They have good people there, most of whom got there from humble beginnings deeply rooted in the creation of games, just like Iwata. I trust them to select someone who is at least all about the same principles, even though anyone will have some big shoes to fill, shoes that even Iwata faced constant challenge to fill.

That said, talk of Miyamoto filling in made me think of how he must be dealing with this. He seemed like a very close partner and friend to Iwata. It is hard to imagine him crying, but I can't imagine even the bright and whimsical Miyamoto smiling through this. Thinking of how he must be affected adds more perspective of the loss of this wonderful man as a person rather than merely his role or icon.

I never do this, but can someone add a ribbon to my avatar. Thank you in advance.

I'm usually quite detached from deaths in the gaming industry but this one in particular has hit home.

RIP Iwata. May you rise to Heaven and find comfort in the joy you helped spread.

:)

I just woke up and this I the first thing I saw.
What happened? This came out of nowhere!
I mean... that's it? We will never see him again?

Shit, that's rough :(

I'd also like a ribbon please

Today’s a day for playing lots of games together as a family until you can play no more, only to do it all over again tomorrow. And as we do that, those games will light up our rooms. That’s how it should be, we can’t keep them in the dark because in my mind, more than anything, that’s what games are all about: keeping the house lit up.

From Arino of GameCenter CX. Translation from Thomas James.

I feel like this should be reposted for a new page.

I think that Nintendo already has some internal roadmap.

I mean, Iwata was aware of his condition and while he didn't want to make it known to the public, I think that him and the inner circle at Nintendo had the foresight to prepare to the possibility. He did actually care about videogames, and so I think he wouldn't take the risk to abandon the company he led for more than a decade to their own.

I really wonder what the next steps will be, and who will succeed him.

I just woke up and this is what I read. I'm so shocked and I have no idea what to say. It is just shocking and sad, and sudden.

Rest in peace sir.

Can someone ribbon my avatar please? I asked once before but I believe it might have been passed over.

This thread is moving pretty fast so maybe PM it to me if that's ok?

If not that's cool too.

I think you're mixing up Morimotos

As said he is PR. Putting him in the Directs and considering his background might have been a sign that Iwata wanted to groom him as an heir in the future.. but the events unfortunately developed different and far sooner than expected.

You're thinking Shigeki Morimoto, who's basically one of the lead game designers if not the lead game designer for the mainline Pokémon games.

EDIT: I think just because he comes from a similar programming background to Iwata, it's tough to declare him as successor. Iwata was cut from a different cloth.

Man, I can't believe he's gone. It was so sudden. I thought he was getting better. I'm not a big fan of what Nintendo does these days but I admired and respected Mr. Iwata. It was painful to hear the news of his passing.
