What N64/PS1 games hold up best today, graphically?

I don't have capture card right now so this is from Google.

The New Tetris for Nintendo 64 is still what I consider the peak of Tetris. The game still looks really clean running on an N64 with s-video. Even the low quality youtube link below shows how nice looking it was though. I really like the way the tetrominoes are segmented and then meld after landing. This variant of Tetris has been called "square" Tetris in newer releases. I really like when four tetrominoes create a gold or silver 4 by 4 square.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I much prefer this slower, more controllable running speed over Sonic Adventure (and beyond)'s mach turbo speed.

Sonic runs at basically the same speed in Sonic Adventure. What you are seeing, in fact, eventually became Sonic Adventure.

Tobal, Crash, and Legend of Mana are all great.

Mario 64 is still timeless to me and pleasant on the eyes.

Is it strange that I consider that to be the best looking 3D Sonic ever made? A real shame they didn't make an entire game that had that style.

I don't like the animations and sonics design (I like the newer sonic aesthetically) but otherwise it really is good looking

It, and stuff like Saturn Shenmue, certainly makes me wish we had another 3 or so years of Sega Saturn life. I would have liked to have seen how far they could push those visuals.

That's the sad thing about standardization and good systems being shut out for not being able to hang with certain things or just compete, realistically or just as a matter of public perception... as different as 3D on N64 and PS1 are from each other, we never got to see how different Saturn's 3D would have been by say, the year 200, and what kind of unique gameplay qualities would have come out of it. If nothing else, nobody can say Sega wasn't creative and innovative.

Yeah, when people talk about the capabilities of the Saturn, they always seem to forget that it was dead basically by early 1998. To put that in perspective, it died before Final Fantasy VIII, or Metal Gear Solid, or any of the great looking PSX titles had been released. If you compare the Saturn's output to the Playstation's output from around the same era, they were fairly comparable.

The only stuff that's been posted so far that I feel "holds up" is Megaman X4 and Symphony of the night. The rest is just hard to look at. Not much holds up if you ask me.

N64: Mario 64, Waverace 64, Beetle Adventure Racing, Super Smash Bros., Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day

PS1: Heart of Darkness, R-Type Delta, Suikoden II, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Wipeout 3, Ridge Racer 4, Final Fantasy IX

Pretty much only the 2D games.

- Symphony of the Night.
- Yoshi's Story.
- In 3D maybe Kirby: The Crystal Shards.
- Final Fantasy Tactics.
- Saga Frontier
Even though it is an unfinished game.

Final Fantasy 9 still holds up really well to this day. Its crazy to think that only a year FFX would come out and be drastically different.

Nintendo's in-house developed racers still look nice, especially Wave Race 64. The rippling effect in the water, the constantly changing terrain, the (admittedly pre-baked) lightning colouring the entire track, it all comes together for a perfect package.

Threads of Fate could pass for a PS2 game. Completely jumps generations.

Also, haven't seen it posted yet, Omega Boost.

Jet Force Gemini - I remember being taken aback when this came out. Looks almost early Dreamcast-ish to me. Very impressive for the 64.

I dig a lot of the PS1/Saturn games that stuck with sprites.

Is there any video footage of Saturn Shenmue?

P.S. My absolute favorite graphics of the era are from Legend of Mana.
I really need to rebuy this game. My copy is broken. I bet it'd look amazing on my PVM.

It was a few bucks on PSN last week.

There is definitely footage of Saturn Shenmue available, check youtube. It shows scenes from Shenmue 1 and 2.

Oh yea, I own it on PSN, but I like to play on original hardware/RGB monitor setup. So I'll need the disc at some point.

Wonder Project J2 on the Nintendo 64 still looks absolutely stunning. :)

3D PS1 games look better in screenshots but in motion they look like shit thanks to the polygons all shimmering and dancing around. N64 holds up a lot better in that regard.

Love the spritework from that era, though.

And Mario 64 still looks beautiful to my eye. Played extremely well to the strengths and limitations of the platform.

When rendered at the native hardware resolution it's not too bad. The low fidelity partly hides the effect.

Good bump. The spyro games still hold up very well graphically, in the same way Megaman Legends does (different art styles, obviously, but they're both very clean and make the most of the PSX's limitation).

I don't see many good screenies online. I might have to take some myself when I play through them soon.
