What is the greatest zombie movie ever?

It's not my personal favorite (although I love it), but I know some people who consider it the best.

A Shark and a Zombie fight in this...UNDER WATER. It's respected in the horror community for sure.
I think there are a few zombie movies up there, and I enjoy them for various things they have etched into pop culture. Night of the Living Dead is arguably one of the most important films in its social landscape. Return Of The Living Dead was really fun and is the reason why people associate "Brrrrraaaaaiiiins" with zombie culture, even though the exact quote is "more brains!"
My personal favorite is Dawn of The Dead, because I think it's some of Tom Savini's best work in the series, and I really respect his remake of Night because it's what got me into Zombies in the first place.

Is it just a codified response to dismiss the 2004 Dawn remake because it's a legitimate Hollywood production and a remake and a remake of the most celebrated Romero film (hey, my username)?
Obviously, legitimate criticisms aside, I really do feel like 2004 Dawn is one of the most rewatchable of all the zombie films (and I've watched em all many times by this point in my life). Not suggesting the original is bad by any stretch. Just a thought.

Tough choice for me, grew up through the 80s vcr craze and remember asking the video tape van man, since we had no shops then with movies for zombie movies when he reached our street. My faves are Shaun of the Dead, 28 days later and the original Dawn of the Dead. Can't separate them at all, all great in their own way.
I don't really have a favorite zombie movie. But I always thought the send more cops joke in Return of the Living Dead was hilarious.

I think the Dawn remake has one of the best movie intros/montages of all time. So good. I enjoyed it for what it was, but I typically prefer slow zombies. Also, the original is far better than the remake, although I enjoyed the remake.
Yeah for sure. When they announced the movie I thought this could have even been the epic trilogy of zombie movies. Such a good book that ends up being wasted on a weak movie.
Return of the Living Dead is just so classic. Love it.
If you want more serious horror, I agree Dawn is classic, but the remake is the better film.

Rhodes is the best character in any movie ever, easily.
Not bad. I would probably agree with all but one, and would order differently. I would probably add 28 Weeks Later in place of Paranorman or Zombie.
Don't get the amount love for Zombieland in here. It's funny and enjoyable with great characters, but it's hardly the best representation of what a zombie movie has to offer. It leans far more into the comedy territory than striking the balance that Shaun did.

Funny and terrifying.
This one. It's interesting, I'm usually not a fan of changing zombie rules around, I like them traditional (runners are cool too). But this is so perfect that it takes the to spot.

I like both the original and remake of Dawn of the Dead.
Somehow the first one seems more plausible and overall just has a stronger atmosphere.
The remake is really fun though.

For me, it's Zombi or Return of the Living Dead. I don't really normally like zombies, but Return had all the elements I'd want to see in something like that. 80s punk, terrified characters, neat zombie rules, cruel deaths, and fucking tar man. Zombi wins by starting the movie off like Dracula arriving in the Demiter, and for having truly grotesque zombies covered in worms and maggots. Plus Fulci's eye for the apocalyptic.

I agree. I like a lot of zombie flicks, but Night of the Living Dead really nailed it.

The abstract synthesizer score of the original version is about as spooky as it gets. This one is decent as far as mood goes. Then the Mega Man X sampled guitar solo kicks in, haha.

28 Days Later for sure. Not only is it one of the best zombie movies, it's one of the best HORROR movies of all time.

I LOVE this movie - but it's not even in my top three for zombie movies.
I'm shocked at all the Day love. I just rewatched it lately and yeah, it's mean and dour but honestly I'm just not into it like the first two.

I know Dawn of the Dead '78 might sound cheesy especially if you take Night of the Living Dead in consideration, but man... I had a knack for watching these movies as a kid. I watched the Thing when I was six (caused a few sleepless nights lol) and watched this when I was ten I guess? I knew it was an old movie, but as a ten year old I was so impressed by the zombies and the gore. Years later when I was older I watched it again and it still held up. Personally I think it's the best classic Romero movie.
Shaun of the Dead was one of the biggest surprises. I casually picked it up somewhere and I loved every second of it. There are far to many funny scenes to pick from (although I still laugh out loud when Bill Nighy turns into a zombie and turns off the radio after the "the man you knew isn't there anymore mum!" speech) and every time I watch I'm amazed at how fun it is. Don't stop me now!
As for the modern approach, I think 28 Days Later is fantastic. It's a serious movie and it has some powerful scenes (Jim walking in a deserted London, finding his parents holding a note and the crazy scene in the Manchester mansion) that are amazing. Plus In the House in a Heartbeat by John Murphy is brilliant. I even liked the sequel.
Shout out goes to Braindead and Zombieland. The latter for the amazing Bill Murray scene. One of the best cameo performances in a movie imo.

Wish I didn't read the comics sequel to the first movie... I don't know if it's considered canon, but Jim dies anyway because he murdered the colonel at the mansion.
