What is the greatest zombie movie ever?

Day of The Dead never gets any respect in these lists. It's the best of the OG trilogy IMO, and possibly the best zombie movie ever. So grim and tense. Also contains one of the best zombie apocalypse monologues ever and a ton of great scenes + great effects.

I know everyone loves Dawn for the mall, but search your hearts. Day of The Dead is so mean.

because the acting is cheesy in day of the dead compared to night/dawn which are serious
I liked it though

ima say dawn of the dead is my personal favorite as well, followed by shawn of the dead
I have a special place in my heart for night of the comet tho

also the dawn of the dead remake is probably zack snyders least shitty movie so thats something

Shaun of the Dead.

Great mix of horror and comedy. The comedy made it feel realistic to me. Hole yourself up in one place and wait for it the all blow over.

Yes, it's just so extreme in comparison. Not that the acting is what sells Night and Dawn... though man, Duane Jones IS Night and god, the ending. Always the ending. Everything is terrible forever and ever.

Don't have anything to add that hasn't been mentioned already. I personally tend to love the zombie movies that have some humor to them, so I am a big fan of Dead Snow, Dead Set, Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Dead Alive, and some others.

What I wanna figure out right now though is which version of Dawn of the Dead I should watch. Never seen either one and this thread seems so completely split between the two, I have a hard time discerning which one is more worth checking out. Probably I'll just go with the original.

I like it a lot. And it has Bob which is a big plus. But it just doesn't quite edge Dawn. It is however way better than I think it seems to be regarded and fits well with the Night, Dawn, Day arc IMHO.

Salute Bob. But then bow to Dawn.

It was Bob right? Can't be bothered checking but that's what I remember.

No, just no.

The original Dawn of the Dead is the best ever made, followed by Night of the Living Dead and lastly Day of the Dead.

Edit: can't belive how many people are saying the remake. I wish a real zombie apocalypse happened, to wipe the slate clean.

The original did not hold up well at all. End of Story.

It's got to be the original Dawn for me. Saw it first time as a long version back in the VHS dub era after the 'video nasty' thing in the UK saw most of the best horror movies (as well as a lot of charming guff) only available through trading or buying third gen (at least) dubs at movie fairs and such. The shitty quality added to the griminess of a lot of these movies and the illicit manner in which you had to acquire them by made even the daftest of 'nasty' exciting to watch.
Anyway, I really loved the movie back then and still enjoy watching it now. It's just such an enjoyable watch for a lot of different reasons beyond the horror. It's thoroughly entertaining, funny, gory, scary, and exciting. It's a great watch and definitely my favourite of the zombie movies. It's got a sense of fun that I enjoy in a zombie movie.

Shaun of the Dead

hands down

really the only movie that got the zombie situation right

it also happens to be my favorite movie of all time

I'm more into comedy zombie movies. Shaun of the Dead is my favorite and is a movie I can watch over and over again. I would put Return of the Living Dead after that.

I can see how it wouldn't hold up technically if you watched it for the first time now. The story, characters, social commentary and pace of the film is still as good as it ever was imo.

I really sounded like a douche in that post :( it was early and I'm trying not to smoke lol.

Probably the original Night.

Runners-up: Dawn, Shaun, Cemetery Man, [REC], Re-Animator, Dead Alive. I also have a soft spot for City of the Living Dead.

Return of the Living Dead

Funny and terrifying.

Totally this.

Zombieland is awesome.

Little Rock: Who's Bill Murray?

Tallahassee: I've never hit a kid before. I mean, that's like asking who Gandhi is.

Gotta go with the original Night of the Living Dead. That movie has held up extremely well.

Honorable mention goes to Dawn of the Dead (original), Zombieland, and the first 15 minutes of the remake of Dawn of the Dead.

Dawn of the Dead and its Remake.

Both are pretty good, though I love the original better.

I should go back and watch it again...haven't seen it in several years.

I endorse this post 100%!

(Although, I might flip NOTLD and D(ay)OTD just based on special effects alone... well, and Joe Pilato as Rhodes.)

Man, just imagine what it would have been like to watch NotLD back in '68. It was like nothing mainstream audiences had ever seen at the time.

The ending sequence with the still photography is still really effective and disturbing, given what happens to the main protagonist.

I used to work in a video store during my teenage years, and there was always a VHS copy of this visible from the front til, since I sat adjacent to the horror movie section. It is a cover that I would see regularly, but at the same time I never once decided to watch this movie. After watching the Del Toro video that you posted, I kind of want to see it now.

All my faves have been mentioned but if I had to pick one and only one, I'd go with Shaun of the Dead. Before this, it was a tossup between Zombie or Night of the Living Dead for more serious fare and Braindead or Return of the Living Dead for a more comedic route. REC is also an excellent flick from more recent movies. And even though it is TV and revolved around Big Brother, a show I never watch, I really enjoyed what Dead Set did. I'm putting on something good tonight.

For those that really like the film, the best you can purchase is the UK steel case. The American releases cut out original music tracks and replace some of the SFX, while the UK release keeps the original film intact. The best part is the B/2 region lock can be bypassed with the press of a button, making the disc playable on other region players. Downside is it appears to have more than tripled in price on Amazon since I purchased it, although there does appear to be some 3rd party sellers on Amazon where you can grab it for $20 (US).

The Dawn remake zombies pause for dramatic effect! Did no one else notice this?

I had a similar experience! The local video store had the horror section right next to the line for checkout, and I'd stare at the Wizard Video cover every time my family was renting a video game or some safe PG family flick. It's such a repugnant, disgusting looking zombie but you can't help but be transfixed by it, such an iconic image.

Luckily the most recent blu ray release has an interview with the guy who played that zombie and he loved the attention he got at a Zombie 30th anniversary convention for it.

Zombieland is the only one I enjoyed since it takes something as stupid and ridiculous as zombies and turns it into an awesome comedy. Bill Murray won that movie for me!

Yep. I've seen some serious zombie movies, but they are terrible at suspending disbelief. All characters come off as too dumb to live. I've yet to see Rec.

"I haven't cried like that since Titanic." Fantastic movie.

And Shaun of the Dead. That's my very favorite.

It is a movie you will either love or hate. The dubbing is bad, the acting is mediocre, but the cinematography, effects, atmosphere and soundtrack are amazing. It is crazy to see how much they pushed with a budget that was a small fraction of Dawn of The Dead's (1.5 million to ~200k).

It was know as Zombie Flesh Eaters. In the UK at least.
Haha it has three different titles:

In Italy, it's ZOMBI 2 (Dawn of the Dead was titled ZOMBI in Italy). This caused a long legal battle with Dario Argento and the producers because it wasn't an official sequel (obvs), led to a litany of "sequels" that rival the Wonder Boy and Adventure Island series for naming and numerical confusion.

Personally I really enjoy the trashy Zombi 4: After Death for it's ridiculous opening title song sung in garbled English.

You got it OP. You got this by the ass! Seriously though, it's still easilty the best zombie movie ever made for me. I just rewatched it a week ago for the hundreth time or so. Also watched day of the dead again which is really good too. I do like Dawn Remake too but it's leagues away from reaching the greatness of the original. I love everything in it.

28 days later is up there with the best too. Honorable mention to the creative as fuck Pontypool. Was really surprised by that one.
