iOS Gaming August 2015 | Last chance to play your favorites before iOS9 breaks them

Potentially stupid question: If I do a full backup of my iPad to my laptop it backs up all the save games as well right? so if I lost the iPad and restored from said backup I would have the save games intact?

As I get more deep games on the device it occurs to me they need to fix the save game situation, it's too fragmented (some have iCloud, most don't).

It should, yes.

Hi everyone, I don't write here often but I'm a long time reader of GAF and there's a game I worked on that just received a big update yesterday.

Game name's is SuperHero Jump! and is a free game (with removable ads) about jumping, with heroes' ispired characters with weird powers. It is basically an endless "jumper" with some nice touch here and there.

If you want to give it a try here's the iTunes link (it's available on Android too)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/superhero-jump!/id979856861?mt=8

Time to redownload The Adventures of Pip for anyone who had concerns about the controls. Sounds like they have made a huge improvement in an update. They're customizable as well from what I have read.

Also on sale for $9.99 now.

This might go unnoticed, I didn't even know it was coming to IOS

It's a weird shmup that has little Binding of Issac/roguelike element, with tons of stacking powerups and varied enemies

Dandy

Oooo...that looks like something I might need to get.

Anyone playing Beat Da Beat?

Man, Harry Slater is back at it again proving he is a bad reviewer. He always fails to see the big picture. He gave a 6 to Ski Safari 2 and here is why I dont agree with him and what I wrote on the review comments:

Alto´s Adventure is great but is more punishing while Ski Safari 2 is all about fun. The developers Sleepy Z Studios want you to have fun. Loads of them that's why the game works like that, they dont want a you to fail quickly with stumbling with the first rock you encounter and have to start a new game. They want you to have a long fun entertaining run every time while you ride the animals, do the new tricks and complete missions along the way, all for the purpose of enjoyment. You failed to see the point of the game. Not every runner is meant to play the same way. Bad review all over.

Oh that looks amazing!

There is another unnoticed new nice free game called Bullet Boy. Gamezebo gives it a 4.5 out of 5.

Good Stuff
Difficulty consistently grows; learning curve is gradual without being patronizing.
Fun visual presentation.
Expands on classic game mechanics, makes it something fresh and exciting, and most importantly, fun.
Bad Stuff
One singular mechanic: barrel shooting.

Going to try it

^^^ Yeah, I was going to check out Bullet Boy as well. Reminds me of Tap & Blast.

And wanted to correct my earlier post on Amazon Underground. Apparently, devs only get paid $.002 not two cents per minute their game is played. So huge difference. I thought $.02 seemed generous. Not so sure now if it is such a great deal for devs, although Mario said the calculations looked viable.

Here's a link to what is used to pitch to devs that someone posted in the Underground thread.

Dandy is really good. Responsive controls, and the pacing is different from your usual shmup. For example, when enemies appear, you stay on that screen till you defeat them. The enemies are quit varied, from enemis with shields that reflect your bullets to enemies that eat your bullets and shoot them back at you. Enemis that charge at you, or follow your movement, or get angry when you shoot them. You can also shoot enemy projectiles with your own bullets

So far the stacking power-ups are cool and add things like fiery damage or larger bullets

Very polished and colorful presentation

Had played it last year when it soft-launched, it's pretty fun

Ok I had my eye on it but now is a purchase. Loving that descriptions about the tons of different enemies with all those variations.

It is fun. I liked a lot those DK sections and this just improves on that. Lovely.

Amazing week: Lara Croft GO, Ski Safari 2, Bullet Boy, Breakneck and now this one.

And this weeks just keep on giving:

Sketch Breaker seems to be nice as well... downloading...

Can't get Lara craft to work. First time it came up with the title screen and Game Center bubble and froze (but playing the music), second time only 'Lara croft' appeared - bit the 'go' part. Tried turning the iPad off and on again. iPad Air 2, running iOS 9 latest PB (3?). Anyone else having problems?

Controller support might finally tip me over the edge to get a controller. Especially when it gets cross-play with the windows 10 version and/or realms support. Steel series the best choice?

Think Frost had this issue. Try turning Game Center off.

I am playing Bullet Boy and while is a nice DK barrel inspired game, I feel like I am playing the same level all the time. Most of the sections are identical on each level and it feel very repetitive. Is like playing the same obstacle set up over and over. Not fun. With that and all the freemium shenanigans (at least it doesnt have timers) this is on the verge of getting deleted. Sadly as it could have been amazing if it were premium, without all that watch-ads-to-get-power ups thing. Endless mode feels very pay-to-win this way.

Yes, sign off GameCenter on settings before running the game and you are good to start enjoying this. Once the game is loaded you can safely sign in again and you are set to earn those achievements.

I haven't had a chance to play Bullet Boy except the first two levels. But have you played Tap & Blast? It's really good with a lot of variety and gets quite challenging.

No I didnt know about it. I see it got released when... well, when I had surgery and some pretty bad times this past winter... so watched a video and the trailer and looks awesome. Bought and removed BB... thanks!

Thanks, seemed to do the trick. Is that just a one-time thing?

This War of Mine is getting a console version with a ton of new content, including an increased focus on children in wartime

I wonder if that content will make its way to mobile

Whoa. Didn't realize it has a bunch of IAPs. In any case, I do remember it being challenging in the sense of having to earn enough peppers or whatever they are to progress.

Hope it hasn't been monetized differently since I played it...and am steering you wrong.

Edit: I was completely off base. Blame it on old age and my memory. It was actually free to begin with, but they probably changed it to $.99 to offset the fact that you can access all levels without paying.

And, I found, some original impressions from our man Bron...More_Baddass...when it came out:

- Game runs smoothly on my iPhone 4. Surprising, since the trailer seemed pretty graphically intensive

- 121 MB installed

- Gameplay is a lot of fun and varied. Essentially you fly from barrel to barrel, tapping to fire yourself. Seems simple at first, but soon reveals to be more complex. Moving cannons require timing, rotating cannons allow you to fire in different directions and take different routes. There are manually aimed cannons (think Angry Birds) for precise evasion, hazards and enemies to avoid, special collectables to find. Mid-air you can swipe to perform tricks for extra points

It's just a lot of fun and surprisingly more challenging than I first anticipated, despite a more casual apperance.

- There are also upgrades to equip. There is IAP to buy different character skins, unlock all levels, and buy currency. It all seems unnecessary for the gamer who actually wants to play through the game, so nothing to worry about. The character skins do have different attributes and bonuses, but according to the dev, the main guy has a big advantage (points for faster times) so you don't need to and are not forced to use other characters

- Charming art style and slick menu design

- As for unlocking level packs, the game is very well balanced in that aspect, at least from what I've played. The second level pack costs 500 Chili points to unlock. I'm only on the third level of the first pack (out of ten levels) and already have 465 points. Game seems very generous in terms of earning points.

And then I beat level 4, had 1126 points. This is another free game done right. By not dying, and chaining jumps between barrels for faster times, you earn more points. So you're rewarded for playing better

- The cartoony art style really fits and stands out and the gameplay is almost puzzle like in finding the best path

No its just cosmetic stuff like new costumes and unlock everything early. I like the game very much, thanks again!

Going to be putting the September OT together over the weekend

Any title suggestions? I was thinking of something related to "back to school" or "summer's over"

Right now, the ones I've thought of are:
iOS Gaming September 2015 | Summer ended, but your backlog never will
iOS Gaming September 2015 | Back to school with a backlog

Maybe something related with the new iPhones or maybe Force Touch? Going to need to be creative though to fit backlog in there somewhere. Maybe just stick with school related if that's easier.

Was looking at TA and Geometry Dash is a fun runner/platformer but I can't believe the thread on it has almost 6000 pages. That's insane.

You guys are going to love Space Grunts. It's the next game from Orangepixel, who made Heroes of Loot, Gun Bros, and Groundskeeper.

It's a turn based action game, and it's really good. Picked up the beta on Steam and there's a lot of content. It's turn-based, but it's fast, enemies move when you move, and there are traps and hazards to evade. You can collect a lot of cool gadgets and upgrades like cloaking and triple shots.

Sounds great! Orangepixel really needed to branch out and do something completely different. Their past few games have been a little disappointing as if they were coasting a bit.

Sitting here pissed that the damn Canadians got to watch the Hannibal finale that IGN gave a perfect 10 to....long wait until Saturday night. Damn you NBC.

Need to distract myself and get back to Lara Croft GO.

Who covers iOS games? We have had a heck of a time getting any press for Star Bridge. Reached out to Touch Arcade, Slide to Play, and Pocket Gamer so far.

Lara Croft GO is freaking fantastic.
I must be dumb because I'm 3 hours in and I'm still at the end of second to last world..and I've been even stuck for a bit.
The game is easier for sure than Hitman GO but I'm liking it more, feels much more an adventure.
It's even much less 'try&die' ... you can usually look at the screen and after a while solve the puzzle without having to try every possibile move beforehand.
I've even repeated a level several times already but could'd find the last jar.
The 'level replay' value of Hitman was higher, because here you just have to pay attention to the background, but it's nice nonetheless.
Really loving it and already sad knowing it will end probably today or tomorrow already, but it's been absolutely worth it and I'm having a blast.
I hope they make millions and, like Hitman, new levels are on the way.

As others said, Deus Ex GO can't come soon enough....this 'GO' is a legit new franchise and I applaud Square Enix Montreal for being one of the very few traditional console publishers trying something original, new and built from the ground up for mobile instead of the usual port.

I like a lot that, despite having similarities of course with Hitman GO, I find the whole experience more meditative...in a Monument Valley sort of way (not only because of the graphics)...great stuff, highly recommended.

Gamezebo. If it's not a free-to-play game you could try Pocket Tactics, but they're pretty choosy about what they cover.

I didn't even realize Slide to Play was still going.

I think Slide to Play now just republishes articles from other sites.

I see on Pocket Gamer, Noodlecake is also expressing concerns / doubts on Amazon Underground. I don't really know why devs agreed to it if they don't think it's going to monetize enough. There are plenty of devs on Amazon that still aren't in the program.

But I guess Amazon's App Store wasn't making much money for devs to begin with so something is better than nothing.

Really enjoying Sage Solitaire. Excellent little card game that kept me up until 3am (granted, I did go to bed at 2am).

From PG's article
Josh@Crescent Moon Games said:
"I can't really comment yet until I see the numbers. Its $.002/min not 2 cents per minute - so its probably going to be horrible."
Ouch.

That's a terrible money:time ratio. 1 minute for $.002 comes out to 5 minutes for $0.01, and 500 minutes or 8 hours 19 minutes for $1. That means 24 hours of play equals about $2.52.

Yeah, I edited my earlier post noting that it had only been $.002 per minute. I find it surprising that devs are openly expressing negativity about it, which is warranted but I'm sure Amazon isn't too happy about it.

At least Noodlecake did praise Amazon for trying something different. I do think it's an interesting idea, but that payout is way too low.

On a side note, it's interesting how some of the F2P games fit into this. Some devs made significant changes to their apps, which costs time and money, but others like Halfbrick just let Amazon charge zero for IAPs. I was just curious and you can buy a 1,000,000 coin pack for nothing (normally $29.99).

Lara Croft GO was great but I prefer Hitman just due to the replayability. I mean, I'm completely finished with Lara Croft already. Every collectible and everything.

I'm a Mini 2 as well, no crashes

Yeah, I know you have one so figured you probably would have mentioned it.

I did recently update to 8.4.1. Not sure if that is causing it. Usually happens when I finish a level and sometimes it loses the save from that level.
