Can't shake the depression about all of this, lol how sad am I?

I can't stop wanting to play the game more

It's such a fucking blast to infiltrate areas and just do all kinds of fun stuff. Also I want to see if there are any insane late-game items to develop.

Trying to read a book and all I can think of is TPP lmao

It's really hit me hard. I broke up with my girlfriend last week and MGSV kept me afloat for a while but then seeing that shit ending yesterday has really sent me to a low point.

We were promised so much but Kojima decided he'd rather the ego boost of trolling people than actually filling in the missing link.

The worst thing is that I actually love the gameplay but all I can think of while playing it now is that I'm not really Big Boss.
This is the mgs2 raiden scenario all over again. The only good thing about the twist for me is that it explains why BB barely talks throughout the game

Doesn't explain why he has a lot to say via tapes. Guy can ask questions about a subject but when skull face talks for ten minutes straight in his face he just takes a nap.

Difference being that you grew to like the character and you playing as Raiden served a greater story purpose than "haha now I tricked you again, fans!".

BB not being BB does nothing but cheapen the story, characters and series canon. There is no canon anymore. It's all ruined and retconned to hell and beyond.

It really hurts doesn't it? Especially considering how big this game is and how much more hours you put into it compared to any previous games. And all that time your were playing a fraud.

Well now we have all the excuses we need for V to himself a child Sniper Wolf as a replacement for Quiet!

There's a whole lot different between Raiden and V. Raiden being an actual character for starters.

That's the worst thing. Sure I hated Raiden as a child but now I can actually appreciate him as a character. V is a nobody. All we know about him is that he's a medic. He's happy to live his life as a fake Big Boss so that's all I can see him as. He's just not his own person.

I was actually enjoying the scene at first, because at least dressing sexy while acting sexy works better than a "normal" character who dresses like that, which just doesn't work, but wtf with everyone inside looking at her as well? If it at least was a private moment, it would work much better >_>

Her fanservice is weird because she's not "that character" most of the time, she's a super powered badass, it creates this weird disconnect between her design and her actions. I don't mind fanservice at all, in fact, I love it, but just dressing a random character with a bikini and calling it a day is just weird. Seems like the kind of stuff that would be an unlockable pervy outfit in any other game, not fanservice that's part of the story. Because in that case, then yeah, you can't expect the character to change just because of an unlockable costume. I wouldn't use it, but it wouldn't bother me either.

This is the kind of fanservice that bothers me the most, the kind that doesn't even work that well as fanservice. What purpose did it serve? I guess Kojima got to look at Joosten dancing and wearing a bikini for a long time?

Yea. Not only that that but also three years of emotional investment spent following the marketing for this game and in reality we got nothing of what we were promised. Ah what a bummer. I absolutely love Metal Gear as well, more than any other piece of entertainment and by some distance.

What I really don't understand is the truth cutscene itself.

When does it take place ? In 1995 ? Then why does Venom look exactly the same ?

Why is there a DD logo on the door and then a Outer Heaven one in the mirror ?

If it takes place in Outer Heaven in 1995 ... how come you can listen to tapes about the truth back in 1984 after the mission ?

And your soldiers now seem to be aware you're not big boss ?

The timeline seems to indicate that the real Big Boss created Outer Heaven and Venom sacrificed himself for him.

But the cutscene makes it look like DD became OH...

So many questions ...

Anyone's take on this ?

I haven't even bought the game yet (live in Japan and waiting for a new CC to dl it off PSN), but honestly, given what I've read about the game I'm in no rush to play it. I'll get to it eventually but I've lost a lot of my excitement for it.

The identity of Venom Snake is more than a cheap twist, it's an evolution of one of the core themes of the entire series. So much of the series has been focused on the will and legend of icons (The Boss, Big Boss, Solid Snake). The point of Venom Snake is that those values are bigger than the individual. It's a similar concept to the will of The Boss driving the motivation of both BB and Zero down entirely different paths and creating such massive change or The Patriots AI Network inheriting the will of Zero. Venom took up that mantle and became part of that legend. To the eyes of many, he IS Big Boss now, even if they don't necessarily have the same exact personalities and experiences.

which brings me to the question: can you back up your pre-45 save and then put it back in after playing it?

or I guess apparently you can do mission 46 without 45/150?

You can. I actually finished the game proper before the Quiet stuff popped up for me.

So I got the "Big Boss you've been playing as is Medic" ending last night...but I didn't unlock mission 45 nor did I get the last Quiet side opp........wasn't I supposed to get those before getting mission 46?

You can. Just save those for last if you're going for 100% or just youtube it.

Oh....this wasn't here as I was writing my reply....

Guess I didn't break something after all.

Also, shouldn't have everyone kind of figured this Big Boss wasn't the real Big Boss right off the start considering Big Boss in MGS4 didn't have that huge chunk sticking out of his head alone?

It's a twist that relies on the fact that Kojima will retcon stuff for the heck of it.

Yes, but there are also nano-machines and Kojima is not afraid to retcon the shit out of everything.

We burned big Boss to a crisp in metal gear 2 but he looked perfectly fine. I imagine that when they fixed him up they got rid of that also.

I'm wondering more about how Miller got his limbs back, dude looks great in all his artwork.

I'm fine with playing as the medic. One of the fan theories guessed it a while ago, so I wasn't exactly thrown off by the twist. I thought it was kinda interesting.

Chapter 1 of the story was fine to me. They tried information control on a biological level first. Then in MGS2 they realize that they can do it digitally instead. Same with the S3 plan. They don't need to clone BB, they can just make another guy think he's Big Boss. Go a step further, and they don't even need to do that. They can just run a person through some virtual training and produce awesomesauce soldiers on the same level as Solid Snake and Big Boss.

What I don't like about the story is how everything just kinda fizzles out after Skullface. Eli stages a kid coup and just runs away with metal gear. Quiet runs away. Kaz makes some hamburgers, and then jump 11 years into the future and I'm big boss; you're Big Boss; everybody Big Boss. There's no buildup to it. It's just there like, "oh hey we had all these other plot lines we didn't know how to wrap up, so I'm just going to throw them in a big pile of random and you can view those, okay?"

That jeep scene with Skullface was terrible. I could not think of a less appropriate place to shoehorn in that song. I liked that it was interactive though. It was kinda cool looking around at the scenery and taking in the lay of the land just before the ST-84 fight. Kinda the game giving you a hint that there are lots of vehicles around to use on this thing.

It also pisses me off that they took the battle gear out of the game. Something about how it broke gameplay because it wasn't balanced well. Then why cock tease us at all with it? Had to go down and look at that thing in the hangar 4 times and you're thinking the whole time, "oh man I can't wait to play around in that thing." Then you get it and it's just, "oh you can send this thing out on simulated battles, which btw, you probably can't even use it in those battles yet because you haven't advanced far enough along in combat deployment for it to matter." They could have gone a few different ways with it and made this work. Cut it out entirely so there's no reference to it at all and no cock tease. Make it weaker so it didn't break gameplay. Or make it incredibly hard to unlock. I doubt balance even matters if you're going to use this thing anyway. I can go in and take out a whole base camp like it's nothing with one of those armored vehicles.

Don't let any spoilers kill your excitement for the game. Its still an all time great and in many ways better than all of the previous titles.

So basically, when I never started overthought the story in Metal Gear, I definitely shouldn't have started now?

The only sucky part about having this twist now, (which really wasn't a necessary twist either...what did it change?) is that it explains how Big Boss was killed in Metal Gear but was back in MGS4...but you would have thought he'd tell Snake during that ending scene "Yo...remember when you thought you killed me? That was my phantom. Get it? Good. Gonna die now."

But the other thing that made no sense about the twist is...why did they happen to find a guy who also had Kiefer Sutherland's voice.

Also....did Fake Big Boss look like your custom character and just convinced people he was Big Boss or did he actually look like Snake?

and then if Fake Big Boss was the one you fought in MG1, why did he go all dark side?

Did Fake Big Boss or Real Big Boss create Outer Heaven?

Yeah, reflecting on this more is actually making me actively dislike the game as a whole.

The Big Boss twist is really ridiculous and reeks of Kojima stroking his ego, trying to fellate himself by shocking us all with another ruse, and Quiet's departing is so pretentious and over the top mushy that it clashes with the rest of the game tonally.

I wish I knew what caused it, whether it be extreme behind the scenes pressure, if he had to opt for these endings because he was pressed for time and couldn't create something grander, or, what I believe, the man just fucked up bad.

Either way, this has just descended down to my least favorite game in the series. As a matter of fact, I'm burnt on the series now. I'll replay MGR:R, but... it'll be a long while (years) before I replay/play another proper Metal Gear again.

(MG:O not withstanding of course, I'll play the everloving fuck out of it.)

Consensus seems like the best gameplay of any Metal Gear, but just a horrible MGS game. I consider gameplay a huge priority for me, so I'm absolutely loving it. And the story isn't really that sparse, it's just more so in the cassettes AKA codecs. Pretty sure it's my GOTY.

Same here. It is fantastic for what it is.

I just finished the game, and it left a little sour aftertaste. Long rant ahead.

If we're talking about gameplay, this game is fantastic. So many options, so much replayability, so many things to do and to discover. It's just a shame the buddy system is OP and making the game too easy.
As a video game, it is my favourite MGS. But as the whole experience, it isn't unfortunately. And this is coming from someone who liked ALL the MGS stories (yes, I also enjoyed Portable Ops and MGS4 greatly, so I'm a pretty easy audience to please)

Plot wise, I have so many problems with it. Where to begin ?

- Way too scattered story. Wasn't pleasing to follow.
- The twist. Apart from serving as a shocking swerve and retconning Metal Gear 1 (which wasn't even necessary), what was the purpose ? What good did it do ? What did it bring to the story ?
- On the other hand, for those who were paying attention, they saw the development coming from miles away. The silent protagonist (about that, I think it is great when you think about it, Venom Snake does not speak a lot, but Big Boss is a real talkbox during the prologue). Not "Naked" Snake but "Venom" Snake. The avatar creation. Ishmael who's way too good at Tactical Espionnage Action at the beginning of the game and voiced by Kiefer Sutherland. His face looking a little different (though to be fair 9 years in a coma can do that).
- I liked the concept behind the vocal cord parasites. For them to evolve and resonate from certain uses of sounds is neat I think.
- But the overbearance of the vocal parasites on the story is one of Kojima's problems when it comes to story-writing. It is nanomachines all over again. Just like with them they the stretch the suspension of disbelief so much it breaks. Vocal cord parasites I can accept. Parasites that essentially do what nanomachines do 40 years earlier feels cheap, contrived and déjà-vu. At least Nanomachines got a pass because it was the first time he used that card, and it allowed us to witness a (Metal Gear Rising Spoilers) GREAT SCENE in the Metal Gear verse.
Each time Kojima wants it to be an explanation for all the crazy shit that occurs during the games, but they could really do without them. Especially when he's using a magical microscopic phlebotium like this, at first it was with the MGS2 bosses (NANOMACHINES), and now it is with the Cobra unit (NANOPARASITES SON)
- Why is Huey such an asshole scum ? Is that so we don't feel as badly of Otacon for boning his step-mom ? At least it's a nice subversion of the whole xerox generation (Big Boss / Huey and Solid Snake / Otacon) thing they were going with for a while. But then again, why hasn't Huey killed Otacon when he got it on with stepmom and instead tried to drown Emma ? (maybe he has a thing for drowning women)
- Also, asshole dad Huey wanted his young son to pilot his bipedal mecha. The Otaku seed is strong.
- Why is there Psycho Mantis ? Just why ?
- The game is not finished. When you see what it could have been with mission 51, it makes me bitter.
- Sahelanthropus and Eli also felt underused.
- NOBODY involved with the whole parasite incident tells anybody ? O-okay...
well you could say the whole Patriots thing might have prevented it
- It feels like at moments Kojima fell in love/wanted to shag Stefanie Joosten when you play the game. I mean the whole scene with Quiet half naked splashing Snake, holy shit. It was so cringy I actually closed the curtains in my apartment in fear of a neighbour seeing this.
- Episode 51 : Instead of having mercy at Eli and killing him, Venom Snakes lets him dying on the island, with a choice of killing himself or burning. Way to go Dad of the Year, that won't bite you in the arse later.
- Volgin. Why ? Why bring him back that way ? Why not just let him be a hallucination or something instead of a corpse reanimated by...er...its cells' desire for revenge using a psychic child to torment Big Boss ? You know what I give up.
- Zombies in my MGS lol (OK that actually did not bother me)
- Paz isn't really dead !...okay then, then what ?

Plus, I have questions :
1. The post-credits discussion between Miller and Ocelot, when do you think it takes place ? Miller seems pissed against Big Boss and wants to kill him using Solid Snake, just because he's not there with him ?

2. Did Venom Snake lose his eye for real or the surgeon rendered it useless for shit and giggles ?

3. Why does Liquid Snake/Eli listen to everything Ocelot, who acted like an ass to him, before and during the Shadow Moses incident ? Please don't say hypnotism.

4. Likewise, why do Psycho Mantis and Ocelot interact that way ? (if it is Psycho Mantis we see in MGSV). I thought Psycho Mantis was pretty powerful and could read minds (or maybe it was Ocelot's self-inflicted hypnotism).

5. So finally, who do you think killed Miller ? Ocelot or Liquid ? (is that even important ?)

Well I liked some things in the game at least :
- Ocelot is pretty chill.
- There were few cutscenes, but most of them were good.
- Certain missions are really really awesome. Not all of them but there are a lot that really felt organic to play.
- It is the primal man that speak, but I like Quiet.
- Some setpieces were really good too. P.T.'s cancellation stings even more now.
- Graphics and 60 FPS are a pleasure.
- DD
- The whole child soldiers thing was treated well.
- Idiot soldier tries to rape Quiet. Quiet proceeds to bust a few nuts here and there, that scene was awesome.

With all that said, if Konami wants to make DLC / Missions like Substance but with the same gameplay engine, sign me up. There could be a lot of interesting things to make.

EDIT : Oh and fuck mission 45. Fuck it hard.

I believe Paz's return is explained if you complete her 'questline'.

1) It isn't clear. It's probably after any of the events portrayed in the story, but people on your Mother Base become aware that you aren't the real Big Boss after the ending (saying things like 'It doesn't matter who you really are, you're still my Boss') so it might occur before you come back to Mother Base after the mission. It's ... confusing.

2) It would seem they blinded him to keep up appearances.

3) Probably because he gives him discipline. They probably have a son/step-father relationship due to Eli not really having a strong parental influence.

4) In what way? In what game? I don't think they interact much in MGSV, but I could see them interacting due to The Sorrow being Ocelot's father.

5) It would seem to be Ocelot.

6) No, I don't know why Ocelot's hair is that colour at 40 years old, whilst Big Boss doesn't have a single gray hair.

I just hit the 13% mark and didn't know that you could break boxes at enemy bases. Now I feel like I've missed a bunch of stuff and feel the need to go back and play through all the missions again.

Edit: Has anyone actually found anything of note by breaking boxes? I feel like there needs to be a Top 20 things you can do in MGS5 list or something.

Did I miss this part? I saw a cutscene last night where Quiet bashes some guy's teeth in, but I had no idea why that even happened. The narratives in this game often feel on the wrong side of "non-linear"

They really send her off with a rape story?

A guard tries it but then gets killed along with his unit because Quiet is a fucking badass even when "suffocating" by wearing clothes.

Fucking Kojima taking away the best buddy. Just give her the vaccine and let her stay.
