Witcher 3 is out, MGSV is out. Xenoblade Chronicles X is next.

Year of the open world. Each game being the best in what it does. I honestly don't see any open world touching these 3 for a long time if ever.

MGSV - Open World stealth action. No stealth game can compare to this game, gameplay, story, or graphics wise.

Witcher 3 - Open world 3rd person action rpg. Great atmosphere, environment, characters, decent story. Again, nothing compares in this area.

Xenoblade X - Open World Sci Fi rpg. Not out yet in the west, but we know what's coming. Huge open world, great gameplay, a billion quests, and DOLLS!

I didn't include Fallout 4 because well...it looks like the last Fallout. Nothing new, just upgraded for next gen.

Like I said above, I don't see any open world game topping those 3 in the near future, if at all. So for everyone wanting linear games to return, now is the time to tell the publishers.

Do you see any open world game possibly taking down the 3 above? Do you want to see a return to the straight forward story games of the past? Post thoughts

I think it can.

As much as I love MGS V, the story is quite poor.

Lol at the Fallout 4 dismission

Xenoblade was an open world game before...
Only Witcher 3 and MGS 5 changed the IP formula

You're absolutely right, nothing will top the disgusting character faces of xenoblade chronicles x.

MGSV does so many things right.

Story is not one of them.

No Fallout because it looks similar to the last Fallout, which was an awesome game, not sure I follow your reasoning here.

Even if Fallout 4 is 'more of the same' then I'll welcome it. I'm sick of the ubisoft world design which seems to of plagued most open world games these days.

Just Cause 3 will probably be amazing.

As others have already said and will continue to say for the majority of this thread why the hell would you count out Fallout 4 easily one of the most anticipated games of this season.

And for the most part Xenoblade X has been 50/50 on the boring/fun factor and like most bad open world games too full of uninteresting side content. Hoping it's good because JRPGs are very rare on consoles but it's hasn't had the most flattering buzz around it.

You forgot Assassins Creed.

The king of open world
but fucking up the gameplay/story

Also Just Cause 3 is my open world GOTY. Already decided.

I'm excited for Xenoblade. I really don't expect it to be as great a open world experience as MGS5 or Witcher 3.

I haven't watched any trailers or seen any screenshots or read into any details or heard basically anything of Fallout 4. In fact, all I've seen is the logo.

Totally agree with the OP, looks like all they've done is switch a "3" for a "4," even the font is still the same. Basically identical games.

I like how Fallout 4 is "Nothing new, just upgraded for next gen" while Xenoblade X is "Open World Sci Fi rpg" as if it's not Xenoblade just upgraded for last gen. Lol.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is going to be my game of the year... without a doubt.

It's a good thing Mario Maker recently released and that we have TGS and Paris Games Week too. Otherwise I'd probably go mad. Actually there is FFXIV patch 3.1 too, luckily, but other than that I don't have any actual games I want from now until Xenoblade Chronicles X. Everything else I want, is in 2016 (or beyond), that we know of.

Story is not one of them.
It's also not the king in the graphics department either. Not including Fallout 4, which is undoubtedly the biggest game of this year, is absolutely ridiculous. No Just Cause 3 is also ridiculous.

Couldn't care less about Xenoblade. Fallout 4 is what everything has been leading to this year (and hopefully Just Cause 3).

You know aside from an overhauled visual engine adding more colour and vibrancy to the world. An entire town/world building aspect. Just because you haven't seen information or looked for it doesn't mean it's not there.

Fallout dismissal is so silly.

How can you ignore what is undoubtedly going to be the biggest open world game of the year, in the 'year of open world'?

It seems to me that the hype really deflated since it came out in Japan. I remember everyone going crazy about it before, now this thread reminded me it's even coming out this year.
