NIOH (Koei Tecmo) reconfirmed for PS4 (2016, Team Ninja, Dark Sengoku Action RPG)

Let's ignore the white hair and ponytail for a sec (which Geralt didn't invent, btw)

Do they really look all that much alike?

He looks like Tenkai from Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.

Spoiler:
He's a REALLY important character in the Onimusha universe.

I wonder if back in 2005, if monsters were always going to be a part of the original concept of Ni-Oh. I'm hoping for it to be a story driven game like the old school hack and slash campaigns.

He does look like a more grizzled Tenkai. It's too bad that Jubei is the only character you need to beat pretty much everything in that game (that you can choose a character for).

That game has one of the best trailers ever. I first saw it when I was in Akihabara, Japan. It was on loop on one of the game shops there and I would just stare at it whenever I go there:

I was kind of shocked at the time that Ayumi Hamasaki would have songs in an onimusha game, they really went full anime in that game.

Same here. Design choice seems like a lack of confidence imo.

Its because the original concept of the game was based on an unfinished movie where the protagonist had blonde hair and blue eyes and was half Japanese. He is the son of a Japanese warlord and western woman.

This was decided in 2004 so not entirely sure how they are playing it safe.

Yup, was always the case. The original title in 2004 was "Oni" and I'm the game you'd fight monsters.

It looked really cool since I've wanted a realistic samurai game for a long time and this seemed like it was going to be it but then all the monsters showed up. Still looks pretty cool but my hype went from 'you can't stop this hype train' to 'stopping at less hype station'.

I guess For Honor kind of scratches that itch but not really.

Besides the eye color, and short-box beard (being hairier)...Yes :)

Young Geralt.

Not to mention, western traits shouldn't necessarily be the dominant "genes/traits"...which here they clearly are.

Watching that trailer gave me the same "Ohh that looks like fun" that I got from NG2's launch trailer...

Hope it gets a western release!

So many hype announcements from tgs. This looks like its going to be a ton of fun. I love Koei Tecmo and this seems like another day one purchase from me.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
^ Probably because they saw potential in the concept enough to keep it?

The designs are from 2006 folks. What is this "lack of confidence" BS come from?

Its apart of the plot, where the main guy's parents were white and japanese respectively.

Also, i thought Ninja Gaiden Razor's edge was a really fun game, even though it did not hold up to the Ninja Gaiden games previously.

So those same guys on this game is bound to be great now that they dont have to live up to unreasonable standards

??

There's nothing wrong with wanting a Eurasian ("Hafu" as the Japanese called them) to be the main character in the game. They are also quite popular type of male celebrities in Japan (ie. Shirota Yuu, Eiji Wentz, Daniel Matsunaga, etc). The game is trying to appeal to Japanese audiences mainly so I can understand the decision to use this kind of protagonist.

Just out of curiosity, is there some improtance to the IP? Why was it kept alive for so long ?

I honestly have no idea myself the game started development at the end of 2004 and was announced at e3 2005. They then demoed the game throughout the year targeting a launch of Summer 2006. Of course the PS3 got delayed till Holiday 2006 so the game was pushed into 2007.

Then we never heard of it again. The official word was that it was delayed and was still in development. In 2010 it was announced Team Ninja were now developing the game (was originally Koei/omega force) and recently last year I spoke to someone who said the project had moved to PS4 and was still alive.

This year, the founder of Koei said the game was still in development and he hoped to show it this year. (The game had become somewhat of a running joke for koei fans that they'd announce it every year).

Finally was announced yesterday!

And yes, as mentioned above, it was in famitsu's most wanted game list forever.

Mhh interesting story. Gotta say the original 2006 ps3 trailer was badass but a lot of other games on that conference had some great trailers and never got made (Killing days, Eyedentify and that gta clone) .

Holy shit I remember back in the day this was supposed to be the first game to take full advantage of blurays lol.

I completely forgot about this game!

I am amazed that this game managed to get developed. It seems that this must be a passion project over there and it surely looks great. Hopefully, it will pay out.

Also, I wouldn't take famitsu most wanted list too seriously. At least, I always laugh when I see The Last Remant PS3 still in there.

This looks really good from what I can see. Definitely getting this. I think Ninja Gaiden 4 would come out quite good after seeing this.

Finally got around to watching this trailer--yeah, I definitely get an Onimusha vibe more than anything else. Hopefully there's an actual plot to the game (with interesting characters) rather than the minimalist stuff Souls got popular for. Besides that, I just need a wide variety of enemies to slay--both human and non--and this looks like a game I'll have to get Day One.

So I got my first two reasons to own a PS4 today with KOF and this. I was hoping a price drop would happen first, lol.

That happened too, lol. And really, it's only a matter of time before they drop the price in the West. Probably to $350 at first, but I wouldn't be surprised if it hit $300 either.

Hey, this actually looks pretty cool. As far as visual presentation goes, this seems promising. I might buy it depending on word of mouth. Hopefully it doesn't take too long for them to localize it.

Is this "impossible to clear fully" a Way of the Samurai kind of thing? Curious to see how it'll work. Do we know if armor/weapon customization is in?
