Love the intro for Blue team but a few questions:
- why are his fingers 'shimmering'?
- why are the flames of the pelican so last gen? it's like a halo thing where explosions or flames are very unflattering

I agree with this, If you go back to halo 2 - 3, explosions used to be bigger. I noticed on H4 and now H5 grenade explosions are almost none existent.

I'm sure the demo the press played was not representative of the current state of the game.

Of course it is, that's why they let them play and publish the videos and help advertise the game.

I'd expect some small changes here and there, but mostly small things. It's fun to look back post-release and play spot the difference.

That Kraken looks amazing, but it's not at the level of interactivity as a Scrarab - but the scale is mindblowing.

Well they were on end of life Xbox360/Xbox One so some effects have to go somewhere. Plus assuming those are fragmentation grenades, they shouldn't have huge fireballs anyway, unless they are HE grenades ala Counter Strike.

Except there is a fireball in the H5 grenades now, and it doesn't look so hot. There are also particles that rain down like leaves falling from a bush shaken by the wind. It makes the explosion look like a non-exploding explosion. That shit should be shooting outwards at the velocity of a speeding bullet. At least it looks like they added a shockwave to them though, that looks decent. I talk about Halo explosion effects way too much, haha. H2A does them best, visuals and sound.

A.I. really isn't looking hot either for your team or the enemy. Hoping it's not as bad as it looks. You'd think A.I. would be the utmost importance with these squads being around you through the entire game...

Friendly AI being dumb has plagued every Halo game ever.

It's unfortunate, but I hope we see some new enemy types that absolutely require you to use your squad.

They seem really unnecessary in all of this footage.

What kills me about the AI is they just kinda stand there and allow themselves to be shot, without evading or returning fire half the time.

It's most jarring with the Elites - what happened to their quick side strafes to break your aim?

This stood out to me too, and I'm hoping that these are just one-offs, because I'm used to Elites being elite. Dodging, strafing, playing it coy. Some of that was missing in this recent footage.

I think the Polygon preview said it best: The perception of the AI for Halo 5 will be different because of how much more engagement options we've been given.

If the AI hasn't improved much from Halo 4 AND you have a whole new set of tactics for engaging enemies, I think we'll see a win/loss situation where you have more freedom to attack your enemies, but your enemies may be more limited because of said freedom.

It looks like the AI jumps around onto objects/different levels a lot more though, and the new promethean soldiers teleport all over the place.

I honestly think most of these previews are playing the game on easy/normal. Greenskull is playing on normal and I haven't seen any videos where the AI looks any more difficult yet. He also said it was somewhat challenging at certain points, and he's pretty good at Halo.

To be fair we had a similar problem with Halo 4 Covenant AI who often just stood there, especially the Elites. It wasn't even a fair fight, even on Legendary, and the Prometheans were significantly more challenging in that regard (they had good AI with useful abilities).

I dont understand, what about "giving me more options to attack" suddenly make Elites dogging suddenly not useful to them anymore? Regardless if im in the air, flanking them or what not, i cant comprehend how the Elites just standing is better than just having them jump left or right. AI is what makes a game fun to play or not. If the AI sucks, then youre just going through the motions of playing and youll never play it again, regardless of how many ways you can tackle an encounter.

I dont care if theres 10 ways to tackle every encounter. If the AI sucks, ill do it once and never go back.

Okay so watching the vids I am coming away with two feelings that are pretty juxtaposed.

1) The vertacality of the environments and the team work is going to make this co-op heaven. YES YES YES
2) The AI looks dumb as hell. What is going on here? Did they have to create the AI completely from scratch? Halo 4's AI was terrible and ruined the gameplay to a large degree especially when playing co-op. I pray they are all on easy.

Overall I am starting to get excited

Honestly, looking at this video, I'm not terribly concerned about the AI. Looking at how RUL charged the Elite @ 1:06, homie didn't even have time to think.

Hopefully Heroic and Legendary offer up serious challenge. In Halo 4, the Covenant wasn't TOO hard on Legendary, but the Prometheans. Gat damn.

Prometheans just chickened out or totally unfair teleport melee. I wouldn't say they were great. The AI in Halo 4 was weird, it was like they didn't engage within a certain range or gave up at a health level to make it easier for the player to finish them whereas Reach, they were hunting you and never say die.

Jury still out on 343 AI.

From what I've seen, everything looks about 'Normal'.

Of course, there is no difficulty below Heroic. That's a minimum.

Agreed. Normal and easy are just not done. This new footage looks easy as hell to me. Truly wish we'd see some Heroic or Legendary footage.

There's no chance any significant work is being done on the AI at this stage. Minor tweaks? Sure, maybe.

Game should be be nearing Gold at this point, if not within the next week or two. Should be entirely bug squishing and polishing, not messing with the AI. That would be too down to the wire for a big studio.

Then again, nothing surprises me any more.

Still no Forge information.

That would mean they drastically changed the Elite's behaviour and i highly doubt that. I never played Halo games on normal, but i assume their behaviour was exactly the same on all difficulties? I see absolutely no reason for them to change the A.I. that much, especially when people can still choose easy or normal, if they find Heroic too challenging.

As always, we'll just have to wait and see, but that would be seriously messed up if this is the new behaviour from Elites. Who knows though, maybe they do actually add those moves at the last minute.

Having BS abilities is not mutually exclusive to good AI. The Prometheans would stick together, support each other, and flank/charge the player when he was vulnerable. Not engaging beyond a certain range is a problem in every Halo game (except Reach where they actually hide from the player until they got closer)

Of course it's not as good as Reach, but that's besides the point. The comparison was with Halo 4 :)

They should just port Reach's AI into Halo 4.

Not only that, but where are the "wort wort wort" sounds from the elites. This really bugs me about 343. They just dont see the "details" that made Halo feel like Halo.
The little details do feel a little lacking.

It's weird because on the one hand, hurray 343 have brought back the chatter. On the other hand they've slapped it on everything. Jackals never really talked they just made these interestingly alien sounds while the rest of the covenant would actually talk. Which was an interesting part of their character I think. Also, why do the Hunters sound like bears?

Hopefully I don't sound like I'm just giving the game shit. It just feels a bit off.

Shouldnt be compared to Halo4, it should be compared to the best Halo games. Its a Halo game after all.

Yeah i totally agree. I thought this studio was filled with Halo fans? Are they fans or what? No one notices the wort wort wort sounds not happening anymore? Or the jackals suddenly talking? Or the lack of the Halo theme song in a main halo game like Halo4.....These guys man, they really anger me sometimes. They dont seem to get it without first fucking it up somehow.

Between this and backwards compatibility. I may be brought into Xbox One. I really didn't like Halo 4 much but that seems like quite the popular opinion. But this looks so freaking good! I am sad about no couch co-op but I am leaning more towards yes than no right now.

Look up further back in the conversation; the comparison was intentional because it was pointing out the fact that flaws we are noticing aren't exactly new.

Is it me or is this gen all about watching previews and being "concerned'?

AI is a big deal, next only to gameplay mechanics and story for the Halo campaigns. (Followed swiftly by level design). All four factors make up the golden square of replayability.

I think Arthur said it was on Heroic? I hope your right and its on Normal.

Another thing and I think I might be in the minority here but I don't think the 60fps was a worthy trade off for the visuals. The game looks like they took H4 gave it a new lighting engine and maxed it on PC. The levels look so sparce and empty.

I disagree completely on the notion that 30FPS probably wouldn't be 30FPS if they went full on visuals. Not sure what the fate of split screen would be if the game was 30FPS, though.

Man, the AI in some of the videos i watch really put me in a major downer now. AI is crucial. So bummed.

Especially since Bungie created some of the best of all time on consoles.

I dont wanna be using covenant weapons all the time

Locke starts with a BR and Chief starts with an AR so you sure will play them a lot.

Starting weapons for the characters as we know:
Chief: AR/Pistol
Linda: Sniper/Pistol
Fred: DMR/?
Kelly: Shotgun/?

Locke: BR/Pistol
Tanaka: DMR/?
Vale: SMG/?
Buck: AR/?(Shotgun)
