Edge Special List: The 100 Greatest Video Games

ctrl+f "vagrant story"...not surprised "metal gear solid" Nope. "mgs" ...not even numero uno? Just MGSV? Huh...ooookay, certainly seems like a troll. "final fantasy tactics" Seriously? "final fantasy xii" Huh...interesting. Still put it too low though. "shin megami tensei" "smt" Nope, nada...not surprised at all. What a redundant list bwaaaaah.

*looks at no. 1* All is forgiven, EDGE.

No Chrono Trigger definitely hurts. That game holds up amazingly well today. I'm also surprised that they picked LittleBigPlanet 3 of all the LBP games. I suppose it features the most advanced creation kit and community creations, but most folks didn't seem to like the story levels as much as in 2 or 1 (or Vita). Still, if they aren't factoring in the buggy release and the long road to stability, then it's pretty solid. Plus, Edge gave it a 90 at release, so there's that.

Overall the list is much more modern-based than you usually see.

They specified that the games have to hold up today. MGS1 plays like the devil's ass piano, and outside of the control limitations, has some really questionable gameplay design. And they said that they had to pick one game in a series if the series consisted of straight-up sequels.

Only thing I don't agree with is GTAV being #2. That game was very entertaining from a story standpoint, but the gameplay was basically hold left trigger and snap to body. It reminds me of brainlessly aimbotting in CS. Nothing special about it.

edit: also portal 2 should be on there somewhere.

Yeah, GTAV is really impressive in all that it accomplishes, but the core gameplay is very clunky. If it had Max Payne 3 shooting, it'd be more worthy of the #2 spot.

The top 10 is so wrong its not even funny.
Looks like its made by someone who started the hobby with the PS2 gen, maybe even the PS3/360 gen.

Questionable gameplay design? Such as? It's played like a puzzle stealth game. It still plays fine to me. And it didn't stop them selecting various Souls games for the list. I was also surprised that they didn't pick MGS3 either, to be honest. MGSV has questionable pacing despite the core gameplay being good and it's unfinished. I'll take a complete Kojima game over an unfinished one, myself.

Here's an easy one:

The reshaping keycard.

Lack of Max Payne games is also weird since it pioneered much better third person shooters from its release onwards.

They aren't counting games base on historical significance. Though I do agree that at least one of the MP games should have made the list. Stuff is tasty.

Outside of the lack of Devil May Cry, I thought it was a pretty good list! A lot of my favorite games made the cut: Resident Evil 4, Persona 4, Mass Effect 2, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, The Last of Us, Batman: Arkham Knight, Metal Gear Solid V, and Street Fighter IV. I find modern games are better, I guess.

Yep, I'm getting real tired of the Souls circlejerk.

and each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance.

But Ocarina of Time definitely does not stand up today, especially the performance and graphics. The fuck.

Titanfall above cod 4... Stopped reading at this point.

I thought titanfall was an incredible game, but it didn't shape the industry like cod 4 did.

I agree with you, but a lot of people are ignoring this:

Otherwise Super Mario Bros would have to be in the top 10.

That's such a stupid way to make a list.

Games like Far Cry 4 were never the best of their time, but they make the list because their gameplay is more modern?

That's not what being the greatest is about, surely.

GoldenEye is pretty much unplayable shorn of nostalgia.

If this were merely a list of influential games stuff like Pong and Elite, which nobody actively seeks out to play today, would sit at the top.

Edit: What's the "controversy" with them putting FFXII on the list? VI is my favorite, but I always thought FXII was considered the best 3D entry. VII is a mess in 2015.

I think Edge just isn't that fond of the Metal Gear franchise in general. They gave every game prior to Ground Zeroes an 8 with the exception of Metal Gear Solid 1, which scored a 9.

And to the people complaining about "Souls circlejerk", deal with it because it's here to stay. I don't think it's too early to rank it number 1 in a list like this at all. It's a modern classic by all means and public opinion of it still hasn't soured even years after its release. I don't see that changing.

I know there are a million and a half problems with this list (MGS 5 > MGS 1-4? Good joke Edge). I'm still trying to fathom how Minecraft beat Super Mario 64. Like it hurts my head :(

The reshaping keycard.

Eh, that wasn't so bad considering the events in the game around that time being so intriguing all of those years back. On a replay though, yes, it is tedious (and honestly the only real flaw in an otherwise great game), but I honestly liked the Blast Furnace environment and Raven's base, I just love the atmosphere in that game.

They aren't counting games base on historical significance. Though I do agree that at least one of the MP games should have made the list. Stuff is tasty.

If their list is "The Greatest Games Ever Made" then I certainly think it should be based on historical significance. That's just me though. OG Max Payne is a classic. MP2 was a great sequel. MP3 was divisive but was fun.

Problem with lists like this, is that they're heavily based off of nostalgia, and in reality a lot of these games have not aged well at all, unlike Edge's list which I'd argue is overall more timeless. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Tony Hawk's, Half Life, Arkham City and GTA IV imo are misplaced, but that's just my opinion of course.

Chrono Trigger's not even on the list but Destiny is? ROFLMAO.

Super Metroid 21?

This is possibly the worst Top 100 list I've ever seen.

Jesus Christ, even Titanfall is on the list!

I think you'd be surprised how LTTP I am with a lot of those games. I played Portal before I played GTA IV, SoulCalibur, Perfect Dark, Halo, Half-Life, MGS2, or Goldeneye. I didn't play Portal until 2009.

There's a lot of things I don't personally agree with on the list, but the biggest thing I notice it that Edge apparently prefers the modern era of gaming. It's bonkers how many stone cold classics are ignored from arcades and the first several console generations.

Safe to say that if you made a list of top 100 games and you don't have a Silent Hill, you made a terrible list.

Or a Super Mario Bros. (Yeah, I know World is in there, but they also included multiple 3D Mario's, multiple Zelda's, etc.)

Or a Pokémon.

Or a Deus Ex.

Or a Super Smash Bros.

Again, I know personal preference is always a big factor but the fact that such a renowned magazine like Edge doesn't list a single game from these series is just baffling to me. Even if you think some of the games in the series have aged horribly, it's not like Super Mario Bros. 3, Pokémon X/Y, Human Revolution and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U are unplayable messes. The same goes for Chrono Trigger, of course.
