Phil Spencer: I don't know if Xbox One can beat PS4

Phil Spencer thread number 342353 this month

Xbox chief Phil Spencer has admitted that he doesn't know whether Microsoft will be able to overtake Sony this generation, acknowledging that PS4 has a "huge lead" over Xbox One.

Asked whether Microsoft could beat Sony this gen during a panel at the 2015 GeekWire Summit, Spencer told the audience: "You know, I don't know. You know, the length of the generation... They [Sony] have a huge lead and they have a good product. I love the content, the games line-up that we have.

Spencer said that he felt Microsoft had "fundamentally lost... the trust of our most loyal customers" around the time of the Xbox One's launch. "Whether it's always-on, used games, whatever the feature was, we lost the trust in them that they were at the centre of our decision-making process," he said. "Were we building a product for us, or were we building a product for gamers? And as soon as that question came into people's minds and they looked at anything, whether it was the power of our box, our launch line-up, microtransactions, any of the features that you talked about, what you find is very quickly you lose the benefit of the doubt. You lose your customer's assumption that the reason you're building your product is to delight them and not just build a better and more maybe manipulative product.

Regaining that confidence amongst the team was "job number one" when Spencer took over the role as head of Xbox last April, he adds, "and being very forthright with them about where we were and our ability to do things like beat Sony was critical. What I've seen in the 18 months that I've been in the role is the team is getting more work done in a day than I would expect.

Some more stuff from the interview in the article. An interesting read. I suggest reading it all before commenting.

Phil seems like a pretty cool guy. I'm sure he's not too bothered whether they "beat" them or whatever. As long as the Xbone sells well enough.

Of course it can't.

There is nothing Microsoft could do to make Xbox as a brand outsell PlayStation anywhere except the US, and maybe the UK. Even if it was selling better in those two markets (which it probably never will except holidays in US), it's not enough to catch up.

Well I already liked Phil. I respect him lot more now. This guy genuinely appreciate competition and good product.

Next Xbox under Panos and Phil's hardware team is going to be god like.

Yeah, I don't see it happening. MS should focus with XB1's successor: no Kinect, same price as PS5 at launch, same power as PS5 or more powerful.

Is PS4 still ahead of XB1 in the US?

Just keep bringing really good updates and keep making those games. In a few years time, the gap may be much closer than people think but its only about "beating" Sony is the eyes of Console Warrior's.

Oh he cares, you can bet your ass that if X1 was in the lead it would be plastered all over its advertising. At the end of the day they are in competition with each other. They are just not petty about it.

they surely can't. Although I have an X1 i do not think that Microsoft will catch up ps4 sales. Their best bet is to narrow down the sales gap!

Thank Don Mattrick for that. But it can still do well and become profitable.

Phil being honest at least although there's no way around that question.

Why does he wear the mask!?
They won't, but at the same time, who cares at this point?

Keep improving the XB1 like you have done and others will come to the console.

I have both consoles and love them both. Fanboy wars have always bewildered me.

Looks like he was asked a question and answered it honestly. He's also said in the past that's not how they measure success.

As long as they're selling well, they don't have to worry. Considering they're tracking above even the Xbox 360, then they're doing fine. They're already past Wii U numbers in a much shorter time, with plenty of steam, so they're not really failing at making a successful console.

I'll buy one once they release a slim, or even reasonably sized, Xbone. Then, I'll grab a RB4 Band in a Box bundle and access my $150 worth of song DLC on that platform and backwards compatibility.

One thing the interview says is that Phil Spencer was at a Gamestop managers meeting and they were telling him that customers still come in and won't buy an Xbox because they still think it doesn't play used games.

That's still a huge factor for the reason why the Xbox 360 base has gone or will go to PS4 instead of Xbox One.

For a number of casual or semi casual gamers they don't spend hours researching this stuff or following updates (like some do here) but instead just believe what they heard when they were first introduced to Xbox One.

Did no one notice that he completely acknowledged why they're in the position they are? I can't believe he came out and just put it out there. That kind of honesty is rare in this industry. Especially because I think gamers' instincts were right about the system. It was designed in a board room.

lol @ the people in here beating their chest being like "yeah, told ya. It's hopeless!". I'm sure Phil doesn't care as long as they sell some Xbones.

I'd recommend reading the interview, there's a lot to it than just the title. Good read. It's a damn shame how Don fucked up everything the 360 built.

Don was terrible with PR but I refuse to believe it was only him that was to blame for how the X1 was in the beginning, a lot of planning and effort needed to go into it.

This Phil worship us odd to say the least...he has been with xbox for years and head of their weak first party output last gen

I would say he's talking about the US, but then mentions a huge lead. I know he has to pretend like XB1 isn't completely out of the race but come on ... he might as well not even acknowledge the question. WW is a done deal, US is potentially winnable.

Wow Phil not even going down with a fight this time?

Companies how do they work? Something like x1 was a large decision by many and Phil was behind it.

Well, the PS3 was in a much shittier place at the beginning of the last generation and then they miraculously turned it around, even after the hacking fiasco, etc.

Consoles and their success are just _always_ tied to the content that's available for them. Sony has a pretty shoddy holiday season this year and Microsoft has a few bigger games - if they constantly keep the quality up and Sony makes a few mistakes (lots of resources being put into Morpheus and Morpheus not taking off, for example), I do think they can take over again.

What Microsoft needs is just a shit load of amazing games that are exclusive to their platform, then people will obviously adopt it.

Another thing is that this generation could actually not last THAT long - If VR turns out to become a big thing and most devs not being able to port these VR experience to the console space, you can bet your ass that we'll see new consoles that are truly VR-ready by 2018 or 2019 already.

Not much else he can say. Sony's got this generation on lockdown.

Phil has done a good job of cleaning up Mattrick's mess though. Good on him.

Yeah, makes me hopeful for the next Xbox. A few friends of mine ditched Xbox brand for PS4 this gen. Been preferring Xbox since the first system. It's a good thing MS stopped its bullshit before launch, it could have been a disaster. MS is stuck with the weaker system now, but it's a much better place than the original idea.

I know, c'mon MS hire me and I'll tell you the answer right away.
No chance in hell it would happen

I'm liking the "new" Microsoft direction at the moment, Windows 10, Surface Pro and Book and where the XB1 is now, they have lost this generation sales wise but I am looking forward to what they come up with in the future.

And this downplaying his role is odd as well.

There is a huge difference between being a team memeber and being a leader. Sure he had say before, but most of the decision were made by Don as being the head. Also before Phil was assigned the role, their Xbox team higher up hierarchy was a mess. There 3 main people, mark, phil, don. Now after the restructuring its much much better.
