31 Nights of Horror: Akumajou Dracula XX

Captured my playthrough. Its really not as bad/low quality as some have said, but on the other hand, still doesn't stand up to the PCengine original. The SNES version of the OST is still pretty cool, but the stage and enemy layout really took a step back. Also Richter feels stiffer? I don't think the backflip is in, or at least I never tried to do it...you can still control his jumps in midair though. Definitely wont knock Castlevania IV out of its top spot. The ascent to Dracula was kind of anti-climatic too...seemed like I was there and fighting him out of nowhere.

I think I missed something though because I never fought against Death?

Alien: Isolation was great, probably my favorite FPS (even if there was not a lot of shooting) in a long time, and also one of the better western horror games ever. Some really tense sequences, and some genuine jump scares. Good stuff.

Played through the intro of Fatal Frame and the beginning of the first chapter. Its even more Silent Hill like than I hoped, looking forward to seeing what strange shit this game will throw at me :)

The game might not have jump scares, but just like Silent Hill, it'll give you this permeating feeling of dread.

Corpse Party didn't turn out to be how I expected. Fucking hell. Some of the bad ends are rough as fuck. Excellent game though, warts and all.

Yeah, it's certainly the most brutal game I've ever played. Loved the audio when playing headphones, so really good creepy moments where it sounds like someone's right beside you.

I'm a fan of horror games and I just started a channel for horror/retro playthroughs with my buddy. We just went through Until Dawn recently (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUD_fpKIed8&list=PLILFHEI5nsU61-K54vX44QlMx6rT6Kmzm). We got an elgato HD and Blue microphone to get started. Next we are considering Calling or Ju-On Grudge on Wii or if I get my cables before we start again we might do Illbleed or Dino Crisis on Dreamcast. I'll be doing an unboxing for Maiden of Black Water when I get that as well.

Got a couple more levels of Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness in this evening while drinking a nice strong IPA...

KnrOWsm.jpg

The Art Tower. This level needed constant changing between day and night using Sun and Moon cards to get through doors that would only open at certain times of day. Neat concept, but the game just pours Sun and Moon cards at you, so there's no real tension, just many trips through the inventory screen.

After that, I came to probably my favourite level of the game so far, the Tower of Ruin. This one started off as a maze, where some rooms were traps, and you had to find three switches to open the exit:

After this section, you had to do some tricky platforming over crumbling ledges. Finally you get to a neat puzzle where you have to make note of the constellations around the room, then jump only on the pillars that have the same constellations while getting higher and higher up (The wrong pillar sends you to your doom).

All in all, I'm still enjoying this game... But it's been 2 levels since I came to a boss (And the last one I fought died in about 15 seconds). I need to fight more!

i really dug Ghostbusters (replayed it not too long back! just wish it had co-op), but man are you in for a treat with SH 2 & 3.

Yeah, I just finished SH2. I have a copy of the PS2 game that I borrowed off of a friend at work, but since I have no PS2 or PS3 that can play PS2 games, I just ran it on PCSX2 with a widescreen hack. The game works pretty well for me for the most part. No real issues. It took me about 7-8 hours total to finish the game (it's my first time, I like to baby step through the game) and I ended up with what is known as the "water ending". Great stuff. Despite the games age, it holds up really well. and I enjoyed every bit of it.

I am thinking about playing it through again to try and unlock another ending. But I also want to get my hands on Silent Hill 3 now.

Havent had the chance to dive into Splatterhouse 3 yet.

Anyone have thoughts on Stasis? Also why is Doom 64 so damn dark >_>

Great thread, Teknoman. Love this time of year for horror films and video games. Last year was pretty fantastic with the release of Alien Isolation. I've been saving The Evil Within and Resident Evil Revelations 2 for just this month, so we'll see if I can add any others to that batch.

I'll be watching this one since I never had the patience to make it through on my own. The difficulty was ramped up too much in comparison to the PCEngine version.

I might have another run through of Until Dawn, then I may stop by P.T. to check in on Lisa.

But I am in the mood to revisit Silent Hill 2. Is the HD remake playable yet, or is still a mess?

THE EVIL WITHIN

Finished chapter 4 last night, and i know this game does get a bit of a mixed reception, but i honestly think its one of the best action horror games ive played in years. Chapter 4 was absolutely pitch perfect horror. It flowed perfectly between downtime and all out action, atmospheric scene setting moments, and mixed it up by adding in the invisible enemies. Laura makes her first appearance in this chapter, and a better horror game monster ive not seen. Shes fucking terrifying. The game might not be straight up horror, i mean its never going to compare to Silent Hill 2 or Fatal Frame 2 (the pinnacle of horror games IMO), but playing this late at night, with noone around, creeping through the shabby hospital wards, watching for ripples in the puddles on the floor or for a wheelchair moving by itself, -the telltale sign of an invisible enemy attacking-, man it was tense and creepy. I love this game. Ive finished it numerous times and still find new stuff to enjoy about it each time. Some people complained the story is disjointed and doesnt make sense, but to me that just fits the nightmarish aspect of the game. There so many moments of running endlessly down darkened hallways from nameless horrors, or a location suddenly shifting from semi normailty into alien an nightmarish, all the worst things about a nightmare, all present in TEW.

I wish I had posted in here a while back, but no time like present.

I was doing the 31 Days of Horror film challenge in OT, but thanks to some surprise day-offs and my girlfriend being home for a week from being sick, we polished off the entire list there already.

Since i'm back in classes this week and she's better, I'm going to start chipping away at my horror game list.

On deck, we have...

Nice to see people giving The Evil Within a shot. I don't think it was very memorable but I did enjoy it. In preparation for The Black Water Maiden I started playing through Fatal Frame on xbox (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9v-VgVimxU&list=PLILFHEI5nsU51HvFYdnznmOu4gf_FwgTh). I am very terrible at it and the controls can be a pain but it is decent. The combat can be a bit ridiculous and that blind ghost is so annoying. I'll probably play through Until Dawn again some time this month.

also jelly of anyone playing that new Fatal Frame on WU soon

nice! that's about my favorite ending personally but some others are great too, once you know what you're doing it's fairly quick to get all but the hidden one (i forget what triggers that, i recall in 3 though). speaking of, you should really dig 3 but just checking: did you play 1 already?

I'm with you. TEW is one of the best games i played also. Can't deny it has problems, but it still is one of the best.
Can't wait for Tango's next.

Yes I've played the original Silent Hill countless times. It actually is one of my favorite games on the console. Which is odd, considering that I haven't played any of the later releases until now.

I honestly agree. A few technical issues aside, this is a fantastic game. I don't quite understand the hate. Sure it is not Resident Evil 4, but it is still solid. I kind of hope that Tango gets a chance to develop a sequel. I think they could work out the kinks with this game and expand on it and make a better sequel. Though when I played this game on PC, I used the cheat engine to improve the FOV and make it a little more enjoyable.

ah, this makes me happy! no spoilers, but you'll have a better experience overall for having done so. 2 rightfully gets hyped as high-tier horror, but 3 is just a fantastic game overall too.

Those ghost ladies with the broken/strangled necks are the worst in Fatal Frame 1. I'm usually not scared of ghosts in movies, but Japanese ghosts are another story.

I played it on PC too, so yes, i forced my way through all the technical issues and had a smooth experience overall. I thought the DLC were very experimental, like Tango was still trying to find its identity, but at the same time, the team felt a lot more experienced in them, so i believe their next work will be solid, as they started as a new team and they are already a lot better.
No, it's not Bio4, but at the other hand, which game is?

The Evil Within was one of my favourite games last year, I absolutely loved it! Sure, there were technical problems, and the story was a little vague until playing the DLC, but the atmosphere and design was top notch - never once did I feel bored or disappointed while playing through it.

I haven't played much Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness because I've been spending a lot of my free time playing MGSV (So good!), but I did just receive this in the mail today:

Once I finish getting all the trophies for Danganronpa 2, this is going in my Vita for some "Gaf Plays Horror" fun!

Jennifer why cant I save you?!

Damn Splatterhouse 3 is strict with time limits. I thought I was doing good in the first stage and then bam, stage 2 I lose one life and it keeps ticking while the Terror Mask revives me lol.

These still images are way more creepy than they should be, especially paired with the descriptions.

Yup, it's the music that does it during the still pics for me. Combined with the descriptions, Splatterhouse 3 has mad nightmare fuel.

I just started playing through Silent Hill 3 yesterday. Yet again, I am running a disc copy on a PS2 emulator. I have made my way up to the alternate Hilltop Center and already I feel like Silent Hill 3 is a better game than Silent Hill 2 in just about every way possible.

As much as I liked Silent Hill 2, I was a little disappointing in how easy it was to play through the game by just beating everything down with a metal pipe. I rarely ever felt the need to use guns in SH2 and ended the game with a huge stockpile of ammo. Of course this is me playing on Normal difficulty, so I don't know what hard would be like in comparison. I also felt that there was a huge lack of monster variety in part 2. I felt like I was fighting off a never ending stream of Lying Figure's, Nurses and Mannequins and really nothing else for long stretches of time. SH2 is still a great game, but I still felt it had its flaws.

Silent Hill 3 not only adds a wider variety of monster types, but there are also many more monsters that can;t be killed easily by just beating them down with a melee weapon. This game has a much better sense of making the player feel vulnerable. Also up to this point, the game is also much less generous with ammo. The environments feel a little more streamlined than SH2, but are far more varied at the same time.

Visually the game looks great still for how old it is, and the models still hold up really well. It looks good being filtered through an emulator at HD with a widescreen hack.

I feel kind of bad for missing out on these games the first time.

I think I'm going to just play straight through and not worry about what ending I get the first time around. I don't know what to expect, but from reviews i'm already aware that the time/events have an effect on the final area...no reason to stress the first time through though.

I just finished my first playthrough of Silent Hill 3. Impressive game. I enjoyed it far more than SH2 and I still liked SH2 a lot. I guess I ended up with the "normal ending", though I did also unlock the Heather Beam, unlimited machine gun and some costume. I might play through it again later. But for now, I may jump into something else.

Its still amazing how much detail Team Silent squeezed out of the PS2.

Silent hill 2 looked solid for a PS2 game. But Silent Hill 3 does top it with its character models, better lighting, and better looking environments. I was really impressed with the character animation on Heather and I liked how they physically showed her used tools instead of just Pantomiming them like most other games from the time did. I really enjoyed the pacing of SH3 and
I like how it reused areas from SH2
. Good experience playing both SH2 and 3 back to back. And a first time play through as well. Shame that the remastered collection was so botched.

Right now I just started playing OutLast. I am still too early into this one. But some of the trial and error areas are a little bit of a pain.

Can't say I agree with you: I loved Silent Hill 3 as well, but number 2's plot was just so amazingly fantastic, and so nuanced compared to anything else in the series, that it will always be my favourite. The revelation that (MASSIVE SH2 SPOILERS)
James murdered his hospitalized wife after their relationship turned sour due to her illness, leading to the guilt/sexual frustration that haunt him/Silent Hill
was amazing, and blew my mind when I first played the game.

I really need to play through the Silent Hill games again (definitely 4 and maybe Origins too). I'll probably play 3/4 on PC at this point instead of the PS3 remasters. I don't know if there are any differences other than slightly better graphics. Homecoming was a bit lacking but okay but I hated Downpour. The only ones I haven't played through are the Visual Novel and Shattered Memories.

Anyway my buddy and I played through Fatal Frame a bit more and captured a bunch of our deaths here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY7DzhfyusI&feature=youtu.be&t=6m25s). I have to admit I'm not a fan of the combat but I think Fatal Frame II is the one that gets the most praise so I'm looking forward to playing that sometime after I play through the WiiU one.

Splatterhouse 3 can really get you going, especially when a monster barely clips you. Those bloated ones can take like half your life away in one snap. Figured out that the yellow doors on the map are like warps. That being said, its still kinda hard to find what the best routes are.

Just finished RE Revelations, not a bad game overall but it was missing memorable boss encounters like RE4. I fly out this week on holiday so no more horror games for October.

When I get back its gonna be either RE Rev 2 or Dead Space 2. What do you guys recommend?

I think I liked DS 2 better between those. I'd play it first either way since you just finished Re Revelations. I prefer to mix it up over play through a series back to back.

I thought RE Rev 2 was a HUGE improvement on the first, and the best RE game since 4. Dead Space 2 is fantastic as well though.

Revelations 2 isn't bad at all. Dead Space 2 is a bit more action than 1, but it still holds up. Revelations 2 is probably shorter if you don't want a long game.

I'm guessing stage 5 is the last boss in Splatterhouse 3, cant get his pattern down. One thing I've learned about recording gameplay, it takes more time to edit the video together so that people aren't looking at a million game over screens, than actually playing and finishing the game lol.

EDIT: Wasn't the end o_o

Thanks for the input guys. I'm gonna play DS 2 to switch it up and will look forward to Rev 2 as RE4 is my favourite in the series along with RE2.

I've been replaying TEW on Nightmare difficulty, so good. Glad there are plenty of people in here that dig the game as well. It's my second favorite game this gen thus far, and while it's not as good as RE4, or REmake, its certainly up there as one of Mikami's best. There are so many ideas packed into the game, and it has phenomenal combat design, encounters, level design, pacing, and bosses as you would expect from his games. It's also has some of the best art direction and atmosphere of any game I've ever played. Its such a good looking game. It has some technical issues with animations (frame rate isn't too bad anymore) and the movement feels a bit too floaty, but I love the game to death.

I think it's way underrated as a game, but also pretty underrated as a horror game specifically even by people who like it. It's not the scariest game ever, but it is incredibly intense. Stuff like chapter 9 and 10 get brutally harrowing.

I'm still going through Fatal Frame on my PS2 and love it, the atmosphere, the art, the story, those freaky black & white cutscenes, just great. I think I'm near the end of the second day. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that I suck at combat in this game. Ghosts teleporting all over, hardly any space to move, and then aiming that clunky camera at invisible ghosts... I'm a bit worried that I've been using too much health items and maybe even film and that I'll get in trouble later.

I can see what you mean from a story perspective. SH2 might be a little better in that respect. But I found SH3 to be a little more robust when it comes to gameplay. At least that is my personal preference.

Also, Steam's Halloween Sale is coming up in 9 days. It should start October 29th.

Completely forgot about that. I wonder if Lords of Shadow 2 will get an ultra cut... Maybe Stasis will hit the sale too?

Yeah Im finally going through this now and it's crazy how fast your health drops. Any more than 2 enemies on you and your almost guaranteed a hit that will take a good bit off health off. So far the timer hasn't gotten in my way and I'm glad it doesn't continue to tick down while Im looking at my map. LOL the digitized cutscenes are creepy as f.

so yeah, Sacred Line (Genesis) was neat for a horror VN, but man is it short! and it seems to cut just when things are getting more interesting, too...gonna go back for the cat ending.

picked up Grim Fandango HD on sale & was debating renewing my PS+ for one month (just to finish Costume Quest!) but im broke as fuck at the moment. tried Alien Isolation again but it's just not what im after right now.

debating finally giving D (Saturn!) a go, ive got that as well as Enemy Zero and D2 on dreamcast. oh! totally forgot that the Saturn's Mansion of Hidden Souls is apparently not the same one i beat years ago on Sega-CD.
