Aaron Greenberg: We feel Rise of the Tomb Raider will stand on its own vs Fallout

It's a pretty big blessing the PS4 version launches next year. Of course, if it's anywhere near Horizon, which I expect to be another long ass game in the same style as Fallout 4.. well damn.

I think Fallout isn't going to review as well this time around. Previews haven't been mindblowing and response to the visuals and graphics have been less than inspiring. Combat seems largely unchanged as well and that was one of the larger criticisms in the past.

Don't think it's gonna matter at all though because preorder numbers for Fallout are insanely high.
The graphics issue mostly exists in the forum echo chamber and the general response to the gameplay shown has been very, very positive. No way this doesn't review well.

Of course it will both games have nothing to do with each other. Different genres, different release dates.

Given the choice of those three games, FO4 is def. the best choice to launch against. Still going to get crushed, though.

Well of course it is. One is on every console the other is exclusive to one platform this year. Pretty obvious. More interesting will be which sells better on xb1?

I have been playing Tomb Raider and it has convinced me to pre-order Rise of the Tomb Raider.

I have NO care whatsoever for Fallout. Never played it and probably never will. It has never appealed to me and that makes the decision to buy Rise of the Tomb Raider somewhat easier.

This reads like a bad astroturfing.

You only forget to include "Rise of the Tomb Raider™ on the All in One Entertainment System Xbox One™"

^^

You should probably lower that expectation right now. Guerilla Games isn't known for long ass games.

It will stand on its own as it is getting knocked to the ground and trampled to a pile of pulp by Fallout 4. It'll sell some copies, but it will be completely overshadowed by Fallout.

Sure, but I think this one has been talked about as being a big, open world experience, so I'm definitely expecting some decent length to it

I never felt like the genre was the issue. It's when you have the kids with a $60 limit or folks who have no choice but to pick a particular game. If the choice is between the two, then it may be tough.

Time is also a factor. With so much releasing, why would I pay $60 to buy TR when I'll already be busy. I'd pick fallout and wait for discounts on TR. Others may do the opposite, but I feel like that scenario is still in fallout's favor.

I think it should have gone against Call of Duty, personally. I don't think those two fan bases overlap as much as Fallout and Tomb Raider's do.

This. So much this. Their excuse doesn't make sense to me as they say it cause of those three games I'd say Fallout was the most similar honestly. Now if they said they thought fallout was the least popular I could see that (the fallout fan in me would be offended I admit) but I suspect they don't want to offend the fallout fans which is why they went with "most different".

It's weird how I'm always forgetting that both Fallout 4 and Tomb Raider are coming out this year. The latter makes sense since I don't own an XBO but the former is kinda odd. I feel like we all are sitting here going: Yep, another Fallout. Prolly be al'ight.

This is hyperbole but Bethesda open world games generally have a fuck ton more problems than other open world games in general.

The Witcher 3 is still fixing issues, their patch notes are absolutely huge. Can we stop pretending only Bethesda's large open world RPG have a lot of issues?

I felt the same way going into MGS V. The hype was kind of silent, just brewing under the surface right up until launch - when suddenly it became taboo to talk about anything else for a solid week.

I hope it'll be the same. Hearing others talking about TES/Fallout is always fun.

I'm not planning on playing it for the next two years so I'm all in on those videos/discussions.

24h GB live stream plz.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
The audiences aren't remotely similar so I can see him being right. More casual fans would probably choose Tomb raider by name recognition of the last one That's not saying fallout is gonna do bad. But I don't see them overlapping audiences
This is some crazy assumption here. Audiences not similar?

For me, Fallout 4 is not the enemy of Rise of the Tomb Raider; Xbox exclusivity is.

Between Fallout 4, Battlefront and COD I think everything else gets buried this Holiday Season. I think Tomb Raider does okay but may perform below expectations sales wise.

Really? I mean, I'm excited for Horizon too but it's Guerilla Games let's know what we're getting into with it. Doubtful it will be long ass.

what does MS gain out of this anyway? The best i can figure is # of people who buy an XB1 and RotTR this year, which there certainly will be some, but I can't imagine enough.

If you already own an XB1 (and don't own a PS4), and you buy it, who cares? You would have bought it regardless of timing. It's a win if multi-console owners buy it on XB1, but there will be plenty of multi-console owners who end up waiting for PS4, as well as PS4-only owners who already have a lot to choose from and they can still get it next year.

And the next TR game will probably be multi-platform. I believe MS had good intentions when this deal first took off, unfortunate it seems like it will land with a thud.

Let's be completely honest though, exclusivity isn't doing them favors considering that Halo 5 just came out and then we have big name multiplat games releasing in its vicinity. Being multi-plat in this case would have helped with sales.

I don't know how this could ever be determined, but I do doubt plenty who own both would wait. I dunno, I think if someone is planning on buying in 2015 and then it becomes only available on 1 system, even if it's not their preferred, I can't see them waiting a whole year..

When the deal was made Uncharted was due this holiday, MS didn't have a similar title to go up against it and I bet Square shit themselves at the prospect of going up against Uncharted.

MS paid Square for timed exclusivity, Uncharted got delayed, etc etc. Other things could have been going on with the game and more money was nice or something, bigger marketing support etc, I don't think it harms Xbox or MS to have this deal

I guess the benefit they have is that Fallout will only be depressing the sales of the Xbox One version of the game, and not the eventual PS4 or PC versions.

Don't get why it has to be a competition. If I were interested in both I'd buy both. Money isn't an issue. I switch between multiple games at a time. Sometimes I feel like playing an RPG, sometimes a fighting, a shooter, etc.

What did the reboot sell at NPD and what month was it? How were the first week sales in the UK?

In terms of mass units we basically have the US and UK markets to look to, with a scattering of sales elsewhere. The benefit it has here is releasing in the biggest shopping period of the year instead of summer. The disadvantage is it's releasing on one platform, that accounted for the least sales of the previous entry, with very little bundle support in its largest market (the biggest error I think), and that isn't successful in the markets where the IP is. It's also surrounded by 80% of the other releases for the year. To me, this sounds like Sunset Overdrive 2.0 ... with a less appealing bundle of limited availability.

Because that's literally how markets work; products compete, and money is an issue.

Sure it will sell more vs Fallout compared to the other 2 however why not just delay it and release it the same day as the PC version next year

They could have just skipped all 3 and went with an early next year release, like a few games did. More polish couldn't hurt either.

They probably wanted it to be their Uncharted 4 counter for this year, but ND decided to delay it, so it was pointless in the end.

I agree with the strategy but I find fault with the reasoning. Fallout is a massive single player game, Tomb Raider is also a pretty big single player game, why are you worried about multiplayer titles? I mean hell that's all Battlefront is. I'd have taken my chances against Battlefront personally. I think Fallout 4 specifically is more of a threat to Tomb Raider, given what each game is offering is a more personal experience. I can hop on live for a match or two of CoD or Battlefront and then go back to Tomb Raider, but once I start Fallout 4. That's it. I won't be touching another single player game until I'm done, but that's just me.

I don't know what the implication is. That people can't like multiple genres?

That the market at large won't buy more than one release in the same week, or maybe month. Given this limit any titles releasing on the same day compete. See: the other week where 3 JRPGs all released on the same day much to everyone's confusion.

I don't understand why they are releasing this during the holiday rush. Why don't they just delay it into, say, February, when it has next to no competition, and would get better mindshare. Is it just because MS wants an exclusive in the Holiday season? They have Halo. That should be enough. They are sabotaging potential performance of this game for no good reason.
