New King of Fighters XIV teaser reveals Leona and CHANG KOEHAN

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
I think they are. Those models weren't detailed though and purposely exaggerated for the tracing process and would look even worse than what we got now.

If they were using kofxiii models

kofxiv characters would have looked like this

Like 3d versions of kofxiii sprites.

I think Maximum Impact looks better. *shrug*

Dude, real talk? Maximum Impact totally does look better.

Weird-ass Iori hair aside, it translated the KoF style way better to 3D. I'd also even go so far as to say that MI looks like a better game than XIV, period. It was a bit slow and clunky, but XIV looks so awkward and weightless right now. It's like a 3D game that really wants to be a 2D game, rather than the straight up 2.5D GGXrd had going on. The animations just look wrong.

also where's K'

He was also one of the producers of Cross Tekken so don't expect a masterpiece yet.

We had to hope that SxT was bad more for capcom than dimps

Looks absolutely horrible from a visual standpoint. What a massive shame considering how beautiful the 2d sprites were...honestly this looks like it lacks art direction.

This.

It looks really... Generic. It's missing some sort of flair or unique style to really make it attractive (say what you will about SFIV, the whole "ink" thing was iconic and its style "popped"... Plus it was animated VERY well).

XiV needs some better art direction, for sure.

What was his role in those games though? If it's like something with sprites or music, it doesn't mean much lol

Most people who mattered much moved on to other companies. I don't know who the hell this guy is. Never had his name come up as a person of importance ever in my 25 years of playing SNK fighters.

People getting excited over this are just grasping at straws.

"Golden Pillar" is likely overselling it. He was probably just part of the production staff while working at SNK, though it looks like he hasn't exactly been idle at Dimps. He has a fairly prominent spot in the SFIV staff credits as one of two "Battle Designers", though he wasn't the Lead. Not really enough known about him to say he'll do a good or bad job.

Were the famitsu images posted yet?

Chang looks good IMO

Also Iori got his NEOMAX from XIII in this game.

Yeah, Chang does look good.

Interestingly enough there was an old rumored character roster that specifically mentioned a 'prisoner' Chang. His teammates were prisoner Choi and a new prisoner character.

Glad to see Neomaxes back, a lot of them were awesome.

My biggest concern is the style of the game. Right now its not looking so hot which worries me because 13 oozed with style. Especially with the neoMax supers everyone had.

Hopefully they can polish those as well as the particle effects. Right now Leona's slashes don't have much impact at all.

Hopefully this isn't another kof 12

Chang does look okay, which reinforces my belief that they just haven't really worked out what they want to do with the shading/lighting.

I don't know, I think the graphics and backgrounds look a bit rough and uninteresting still (though there is a clear improvement from the previous trailer), but the character designs look more KOF-ish than KOFXII and KOFXIII put together. And, based on the short gameplay footage they have shown, it also looks like the gameplay is more classic KOF than the last two main entries. I honestly don't get all the hate...

The mantra of most of GAF is basically 'if the graphics are shit then the game is shit'. I'm not saying everyone in this thread is like that but I've seen this logic applied to a lot of games recently and it seems like it's happening here too. It's absurd to write a game off completely after like 20 seconds of quickly cut footage, especially seeing as the game was only announced at the end of September. I'm open to the game looking better by launch and I can see the difference now. People just need to have a little bit more patience and faith.

The developer team could really be enthusiastic about this game. Development will definitely be faster than the past two games, and if everything fails yet again at least we'll have a bunch of SNK fanservice if you go by Maximum Impacts example.
If it also plays well then it's on us to see how popular it gets in the fgc.

The gameplay looks like classic KOF, which is good at least.

But yeah, the visuals look...not very good, still. In a world where we have 3D fighters that look as good as Xrd, SFV, MKX and even Tekken 7, that shit just doesn't cut it.

(yes I know Xrd models had hand-drawn animations that took forever to get right, still not an excuse for XIV to look like poop)

I don't think a lot of people are saying the gameplay will be shit as a fact (too soon to tell) but there's no question that visually this looks underwhelming. Like not just from an art direction perspective but from a technical perspective too. This is especially important considering the competition in the current fighting game scene. It will be hard to garner casual attention (important for sales) when you put this next to SFV or GGXrd. I don't think that's an unfair analysis of the situation at all.

So, WHY aren't they just reusing the sprites from KoF XIII and making a few more?

It takes an absurd amount of time to make them and no one would care since they would just be seen as dlc for KOFXIII. Might as well call it KOFXIII ultimate edition, who but the hardcore will care then?
It has been shown that that work flow just is too inefficient.
3D wasn't a misstep, their first showing is simply terrible in comparison to competitors like Guilty Gear Xrd. If they have access to the internet, they should know that there are some improvements to make.
The new screens are better especially the new character shown so i will hope that they can try harder.

King of Fighters 14 EX Plus Alpha Edition.

... please cancel this game. It looks awful, the art direction is budget trash and the moves look flimsy.

I'd be okay with King of Fighters 14 just being an upgraded King of Fighters 13 with no visual improvements.

No, you're right, that is a fair analysis. Right now the game does not look good. Has it improved since TGS? Absolutely, but it's still not great. I think the game can look good by launch, but it's too late to look great. I'd be really surprised if they managed to completely turn it around. My post was more aimed at the really OTT posts about the graphics and not the gameplay so I don't know where you got that from tbh. The game is visually underwhelming but there's been some comments in earlier pages and other threads that have just completely blown this game off already after barely two months of it's existence being known to the public. Those are the posts I'm talking about and it's those posts that I see everywhere on GAF (i.e every Fallout 4 thread). I understand that people are uneasy on the game but to just go 'it's shit and it's not going to get better so fuck this game entirely' is just moronic to me and I cannot understand anyone who thinks this way.

EDIT:

Posts like this are exactly what I'm talking about. Ridiculous.

They should have done that years ago, but now the sales potential of that game is near zero and that's not how most companies want to make money.
It wouldn't surprise me if this game crashes and burns that they would make improvements for KOF15. Whoever is the marketing guy is completely out of touch with the world though unless these meet chinese gaming standards or something.
