Tetsuya Takahashi: I would want a 3rd Xenoblade to be more like the first again

Xenoblade has had a big impact on the market in Japan, and there is also expectation building in Europe. Which game elements do you think are responsible for the global appeal of this game, and for the appeal of the Xenoblade series as a whole?

I imagine a large part of the appeal is in this being the first open-world RPG from Japan. I also think it's really meaningful that this is a middle tier title, rather than a AAA title. The Xenoblade series has always had a different genre for each game, with the previous game being fantasy, and now turning to science fiction. I hope we will be able to continue the series like this, exploring lots of different settings, rather than being confined to a specific genre.

really like this direction!

My main gripe with Xenoblade was the combat, I'm not a fan of this mix of real-time and turn-based gameplay. I want true turn-based gameplay where you can put the controller down and take your time to think or just to watch the battlefield without any pressure, and I like real-time gameplay that's constant like Tales.

Just pick one!

I'll most likely get it as long as the next game has beautiful and varied areas.

That said I would prefer if they do make it more story that they still leave out a linear world. Xenoblade while very huge required you to finish the story in each section before moving on.

I hope they do not go back to that.

I can't find the source but in an older interview Takahashi mentioned that X has a faster paced combat system because the team originally wanted X to be a pure action RPG. They ended up sticking with the first game's combat system as a basis because they were already working on a lot of new gameplay mechanics for X and didn't want the game to suffer from attempting too many things at once.

There might be a chance the team gives it another shot next time around.

I really hope they do, nothing against X (have my copy, haven't played it yet tho) but I'd definitely perfer a more story driven Xenoblade next time around.

As long as NX has a normal ass controller, i'll buy one for this game.

A normal ass controller, eh?

I'd be fine with story driven but the setting and aesthetics of X are SO much better than the faux-FF X beachware summer fun setting of Xenoblade

My man.

What I thought X would be was Xenogears but with good mech controls and Xenoblade's combat.

Xenoblade is not exactly that either, but it's closer to the story driven experience that I like.

Personally I just want something not Xenoblade next time. Either a truly different new IP (XCX really wasn't a new IP), or a revival of something prior, like Xenosaga.

How about they make something new next time? Crazy idea, I know.

Yeah... because Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X have are so similar beyond the combat system and emphasis on exploration.

What in the world.

So while you guys take your time and make a third xenoblade for the NX I'll gladly take remasters of the first two for the NX ;)

They aren't? The emphasis on exploration and scale is literally the biggest thing about the two games and you're casting it aside.

Story apart, I wonder what will be the setting of the next Xenoblade. Don't look like they will use sci-fi again next time

I didn't buy a WiiU when I found that Chronicles X wasn't story driven (In the way xenogears/saga/blade where).

Let's see if the next one makes me buy my first nintendo console.

I like that he mentioned the differing genres between Xenoblade and X (fantasy and sci fi) and I would love for a third game in the "series" to explore a new genre entirely. Plus, more story is always good in my book. Xenoblade was aces.

Xenoblade Chronicles really is fucking amazing, the scope and beauty of each location, not to mention the engaging story and characters... god it was good.

Good!

I liked the first more than what I've seen of the second. But my copy is on the way now, so I can't say for sure.

What I'm reading of this is how Xenoblade Chronicles is story focused, Xenoblade X is gameplay focused, so I believe the next game with be the best of both. They've really done a lot to fix up things with the combat for Xenoblade X, so I am excited for the 3rd game!

So Xenoblade X is NOT story focused?

Is this assessment accurate. I have not paid attention to the new game at all because I didn't care for the first, but if it's just exploring and combat, I'd be totally in for that.

Enjoying Chronicles X quite a bit. I like the gameplay centric nature of it, and the sci-fi vibe. If they go back to being more like the original Chronicles, I really hope they go with a more sci-fi vibe. I found the original Chronicles to be a little bit lacking in style and integrating more mechs, ships, and interplanetary travel would be excellent to spice it up. Also give more customization to weapons and such.

It's not a linear story like XB.
The story unfolds through character quests and exploration.

I thought I wanted this too but I'm having so much fun with X, do whatever you want Monolith soft! I'm sure it will be great no matter what.

What amaze me is what they manage to do with XCX when the budge given was for a mid tier project. Really great usage of the budget and does tell why story elements were simplify. Still great work and hope to hear about their next project later :)

I have love all of their games (yes including Disaster :p).
