The State of the Wii U In 2015 [Kotaku]

It's all about tastes and preferences.

The PS4 has twice the amount of retail releases (if not more) than the Wii U does, but the Wii U has more software that I'm interested in, so it's a bit difficult to make big sweeping statements objectively.

Well..yeah. That's the problem. The PS4 has every genre under the sun, as opposed to the Wii U which has a very limited selection of games. It's not just open world, either. What if you want to play WRPGs? Story-based episodic adventure games like Life is Strange? Hell, it took them three years to give us an actual JRPG. Saying that you are SOL with the Wii U unless you like certain genres is spot-on.

10 years from now the Wii U library will still be amazing. Fun games will always be fun. I know I'll still be playing Mario Kart 8. That's the thing with Nintendo games. They are so well designed that they are timeless. Still, I worry about Nintendo's place in this industry that is so driven by violence. That's really why the other guys are cool and Nintendo is not. Is there a big enough market for family friendly games with cute characters?

Absolutely, but not solely by themselves. They need to sit alongside those other adult-orientated products to be considered a viable platform attractive to a range of demographics. Nintendo must remember that the very people that owned Nintendo machines as children are adults today - and it's these people that are not being catered for.

I would have bought the Smash + Splat bundle for $199 USD over a PS4. But asking the same price as a PS4... I ended up getting the PS4. Only game I'm interested in that is still in the pipeline is Zelda and nothing else. And of the releases from 2015, I'm only interested in Yoshi, and Mario Maker. Overall I agree with the article. I don't feel the asking price of the Wii U is worth what Nintendo is asking.

Definitely a weak year for the console. Only about 3-5 must have games in the year that released. At this point it feels like everyone just wants to move on to NX.

Her shrug-off of XCX is pretty frustrating. What does "kind of obscure" even mean?

It's a great game that deserves better than to be written off just because it's on the Wii U.

A lot of Wii U games are like that, frankly. Wii U had a lot of good games this year too (Splatoon, Xenoblade X, Rodea -admittedly the wii version that shipped with the first editions of the wii u copy-, Mario Maker, Yoshi, Rainbow Curse, Fatal Frame, tons of Smash content, FAST, etc. etc.) and showed the other consoles how online should frankly be done with Splatoon.

This article felt like nothing but the writer arguing: "Yea, the Wii U had the best exclusives but it still sucks." Agreed heavily with borghe above on the tone of the articles. There was a very obvious rush to defend Xbox 1's lackluster year and lots of shoving under the rug of the accomplishments of the other two. Especially the Wii U's accomplishments it would seem.

I really dislike the way some people keep saying that Nintendo has the best games. They fail to add "in my opinion" at the end of their sentences. As much as it appears to be an alien concept to some, not everyone is actually interested in Splatoon and Mario Maker.

Anyone I know that invests time and money into games would rather jump in front of a bus than spend ten minutes with either. Everything is subjective.

I believe "in my opinion" is self-explanatory? And I'm sorry you have such suicidal friends, that must be really hard to deal with.

It only had a few good games this year, but they were pretty damn excellent. A great machine to have as a second or third machine, but I'd feel starved of games if it was my only one.

I rather have 3 amazing games instead of 10 average at best games and remasters.

No console was short of amazing games this year.

Im shocked to hear someones thoughts are their opinion... shocked!

I think that's why they're saying "the best games" (subjective) instead of "the most games that people are actually interested in" (empirical).

Well, that's just your opinion on the matter of message boards and, in my opinion, you should let us know it's an opinion.

IMO (In my honest opinion, really) I think all such "facts" such as "I like this game" or "This game sucks" should all have (IMO) a label of some kind making sure that the viewer or reader (IMO, it should be reader, but to each their own) knows that that statement isn't actually "fact" but subjective opinion. Just my opinion.

everyone you know has terrible taste in games. and nintendo make, objectively, the greatest games.

On the one hand, I only bought two games for the system this entire year. On the other hand, those games are Splatoon, which I put roughly 100 hours into, and Xenoblade, which I also anticipate I'll put roughly 100 hours into.

If Star Fox and Zelda were still 2015 releases, it would've been a killer year.

Splatoon was really really great. Like so good it kinda makes up for the rest of the year being so bad (along with some other other stuff) So could have had a worse year anyway.

Dude, c'mon, his friends have severe emotional issues. Clearly they are quite depressed if they are willing to throw themselves in front of a bus instead of playing good video games. They need help.

My time spend playing Splatoon is over 900!

I've officially renamed the Wii U a SplatoonStation.

Might get XCX but honestly that would probably happen next year.

Have only bought 4 games on the Wii U which came out this year: Splatoon, Affordable Space Adventures, Runbow and Fast Racing NEO
A few releases from last year and the Humble Indie Bundle

Overall Splatoon has completely satisfied my needs on the Wii U in 2015

I got Splatoon, and I'm really interested in trying Yoshi but haven't been able to afford it yet. Don't care about Mario Maker or Xenoblade.

That's about the same as what I got on PS4, which was pretty much just Arkham Knight and MKX.

I dunno, the Wii U wasn't great this year for me, but it was overall a pretty shitty year in my opinion.

Weird statement to make when the big games of the year on other platforms were all reiterative sequels (W3/F4 etc...) and the big WiiU games were Splatoon (new franchise, new genre), Mario Maker (old franchise yes, new experience) and XCX (expanded experience of open world)

The Witcher 3 is a reiterative sequel? Have you played The Witcher 1 or 2?

Actually playing Xenoblade X, I'm enjoying it more than any other game played this year.. on par with The Witcher 3. Along with Splatoon and Mario Maker i kinda disagree. I have a PC, so the Wii U is the most used console this year for me.

Pretty good article, and I mostly agree. Though putting Xenoblade Chronicles X in that paragraph about Wii U's end of 2015 being "barren", lumping it together with Fatal Frame and Mario Tennis, is insulting, IMO. You can tell how reluctantly she writes "it's actually pretty good", because the game doesn't really suit the narrative the rest of the paragraph is supposed to tell, but she desperately wants it to. It's a great game that has been received very well; it doesn't need to be scoffed at just because everything else from Nintendo this Holiday has been so awful.

Xenoblade's my thing, but I did not enjoy Splatoon or Mario Maker. I hate these life-support years in Nintendo hardware.

I don't quite why people think the Wii U had a solid year compared to the PS4 and Xbone. Well, if you only count first party exclusives like many posters here do, maybe, but that's not how it works in the real world. If you compare the total number of non indie games for the Wii U, the library is laughably slim, since there is only one major publisher making games and that's of course Nintendo.

The fact is that each year is a mediocre year for the Wii U compared to the PS4 and Xbox.
Owning a Wii U makes only sense if it's your second console but that's not going to be an attractive proposition for the average gamer who hasn't got a money tree growing from his back.

I've been so blind. Thank you for showing me the light.

Its a shame the Wii U doesn't get more love than it does sales-wise. It really is home to some of the most excellent games I've ever played. It dominates my gaming time. PC gets a little love, my 3DS has been neglected for a while and I mostly use my PS3 to stream netflix/hulu/hbo.

I know I'll get a PS4 eventually... If I can peel myself away from Splatoon.

The kind of line up that the WiiU had this year would have absolutely sunk any of the other consoles, I think. That by itself is impressive.

That being said, picking up Splatoon + Xenoblade Chronicles X for a combined $47 was the highlight of my holiday shopping this year. Glorious gaming ahead!

Eh. The two games I played on my Xbox One this year were GoW: Ultimate and Rare Replay. If you have a PS4 or PC it's kind of a lacklustre year for the system.

Oh yeah the 3DS was also pretty poor this year, but next year looks surprisingly better.

I'm not a big fan of the Nintendo franchises anymore but want to play xenoblade. Is it worth it to buy a WiiU for it?

I would say so yes, but for me XBCX is one of the best games ive played in a LONG time, i bought my wii u a while ago for MH3U but even if i hadnt i would be pleased that i had the console to play this gem on.

I think the Wii U was the best system to own in 2015

Splatoon
Devil's Third
Xenoblade X
Project Zero: Maiden of Blackwater
Fast Racing Neo
Super Mario Maker
Yoshi's Woolly World
Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush
Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack 2
Super Smash Bros. DLC (Freakin' Ryu!)

Xenoblade X alone makes it my favourite 2015 system but every single game listed there has blown me away in one way or another. Mario Kart 8 DLC remains some of the best downloadable content of all time, Devil's Third and Splatoon are contenders for best multiplayer game this generation, it's been a fun year. Also I urge everyone to pick up Fast Racing Neo, it's cheap and it's brilliant.

I was very disappointed with The Witcher 3 and Metal Gear Solid V. Resident Evil Revelations 2 and Tearaway Unfolded were tremendous and i've yet to play Halo 5, Fallout 4 or Rise of the Tomb Raider.

I think this is proof you can't convince a Wii U advocate otherwise. Their system rocks. I'm a Nintendo fan, and I dislike the system and most of the library on it. I just think the Playstation 4 is on another pantheon in terms of great games available.

Guys, the vast majority of statements made on this forum are opinions.

Putting IMHO at the end of all posts adds nothing.

I own and play on all systems, it's true Nintendo's my favourite developer but I genuinely think Devil's Third and Maiden of Blackwater are terrific game. Devil's Third in particular. Why did you bold Kirby?

Yeah kind of a down year for the Wii U, getting some weird games as major development efforts shift to the NX. But overall this still continues my belief that the Wii U is still the best next gen console. I have a computer so my PS4 has pretty much been a Bloodborne box. There are a few other quality games that came out, but really Tearaway is the only other PS4 exclusive I've cared about. The Wii U has given me some fantastic experiences this year. Next year, the PS4 comes into it's own, but with a PC it just doesn't match up to the Wii U as a secondary console so far

I think this is proof you can't convince a Wii U detractor otherwise. To them the system sucks. I'm a Nintendo fan, and I love the system and a lot of the library on it. I just think the Playstation 4 is hasn't really got many games that appeal to me yet, excluding the excellent Bloodborne.

Also Runbow, Affordable Space Adventures, Rodea The Sky Soldier, Earthbound Beginnings, and Mario Party 10, IMHO.

I havn't touched the Wii U disc of Rodea yet but i'm loving the Wii version and your damn right with Earthbound Beginnings, my favourite surprise of the year.
