Splatoon sells over one million copies in japan

The most surprising thing is that Splatoon will be the best-selling Wii U game in Japan and it will likely be the second-best selling Wii U game worldwide behind Mario Kart 8.

I'd say no, it's quite hardcore. The competition is fierce. Do you think he can handle twin sticks + gyros?

The game is totally playable for a 5 year old. I am awful at shooters and can handle splatoon. Truf wars and low C rank are accessible. When you get into A rank its much more fierce yes.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Really pleased about this. I often wonder if Wii U's fortunes would have changed if this was a launch title.

The Wii franchises probably. Monster Hunter 3 also crawled over the finish line on a home console. Before that I think you have to go back to the PS2 with Winning Eleven, Onimusha, and Kingdom Hearts.
So it's almost close to a once-a-decade achievement.

Holy crap at Splatoon turning into the biggest franchise in japan for nintendo. there taste sure is very different then rest of the world.

You know it did well globally, right? It didn't sell at quite the same levels, but let's not pretend this is a similar situation to something like Dragon Quest or pre-4 Monster Hunter.

The Squid Sisters concert is the real story. I would love to buy a DVD.

I hope the success of this game encourages some more fresh IPs from Nintendo EPD

CODENAME STEAM launched in Japan last year with worse sales for a Nintendo published game since the Gameboy Advance. Wonderful 101 surely trounced it I sales.

I'm sure that tempered Nintendo to go full force on new IP's. They're still a gamble compared to establish IP's.

Still I do expect a new major IP to be announced this year.

It's selling ok globally, nothing like Japan where it's the best selling game on consoles for the past 2-3 years that's crazy.

Yeah they definitely wanted both to become a "new big thing", but everything about Codename STEAM just did not look appealing in the slightest. The artstyle alone was incredibly off-putting. Splatoon has a unique/weird charm that feels right at home with Nintendo's other big franchises.

Splatoon 2 is going to be huge, and I expect we'll see it Holiday 2017 for NX. And I fully expect Nintendo to be looking for another new IP, see if they can catch lightning in a bottle again.

I'm glad because the game is seriously one of the best Nintendo has released in years. Japanese players are tenacious bastards in Splatoon too. It is serious business over there. haha

I think it helped that this game had it's own and new characters and art style instead of the Mario cast. Now Nintendo has a foundation for another franchise.

I expect that whoever pushed for/authorised the Garage program will have seen their stock rise considerably at Nintendo. Handled correctly, it has huge potential and coupled with the rise of younger developers at Nintendo and the possibility of a move to a single ecosystem I'd like to see it lead to a renaissance at the company. They produce incredible games, but the risks of supporting two struggling platforms have made them a little safe recently (even if smaller, more experimental titles are still there) and it's arguably contributed to their current position in the market.

Great job! I love Splatoon and it was a wild ride while it lasted.

I get bummed out nowadays because ever since I hit level 30 I get paired up with nothing but lv50 Japanese players who wipe the floor with me. Getting completely dominated by teams of E-liter 3K users makes me not want to play anymore. If I had a nice group to play with I'd probably have fun again.

I was really hoping for Inklings in Smash last night, but I suppose with as big as the game is they will save it for Smash 5.

Wow from the outside looking in I didn't expect this. Every time I see the game it always looks fun. Congrats to Nintendo and the team that worked on this.

I can already see the sequel plans and Inklings as surprise inclusion in Smash 5 and Mario Kart...

That's inkcredible, I'm bamboozled that only 6 months ago there were entirely different splatspectations. The deepest lore and the depth of gameplay options have really helped propel the squids into a household name in Japan, a cultural phenomenon. I wonder how much longer it will continue being in the top 10 in Japan. Dem tentacles

And to think a year ago people were predicting sub 1M WW.

Those "Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?" and "Splatoon - Nintendo's next smash bros?" are pretty fun to read. The only thing holding it back is the Wii U install base.

I bet if WiiU were cheaperrr then it is now, Splatoon be a system seller that wouldve pushed wiiu hard (in Japan)

So happy for this game.

Nintendo really needed this game to be a hit and it pretty clearly exceeded almost everyone's expectations.

Now Nintendo has another series where, upon its announcement alone will generate a ton of hype and excitement. Hopefully this game's success will make Nintendo more willing to start entirely new IP's. Mario, Zelda and Smash are great but they really can't keep relying on them forever as their big guns. They need to keep growing their cast of characters
