Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

Because Rift uses a camera for 3d space positioning, if the camera's view of the controller is occluded, it loses track of 3d positioning. For example, you turn around 180 degrees and your body blocks the camera's view of your hands and controllers. Or you leave the camera's FOV. It tries to compensate with accelerometer and gyroscope data, but those are prone to drift (errors adding up over time).

Vive has sensors on the controllers, and it should be harder for those to lose sight of the two lightboxes that they use for positioning data.

Isn't it all about where you place the cameras/lighthouses? You get less occlusion with the lighthouses because you have two by default, and you place them at opposite corners of a bounding rectangle. With the standard OR you have a single camera pointing at you. With oculus touch they mention adding a second camera for improved tracking. If you had long enough USB cables to place them at opposite corners like the Vive lighthouses, shouldn't you get similar occlusion resistance?

Here's a potentially accurate chart of when you might expect your rift to ship (from /r/oculus):

0gh0suO.png

It's been put together by a sampling of about 700 orders so far.

My order went through at 8:05am and I'm a 25X order. Apparently doesn't guarantee me in that first March 28 batch, but I guess I'll live with 93% for now lol.

Any indication from Palmer or oculus on whether us free bastards are going to ship early?

Yeah, I will have to wait a little while :/

Really though, I need to try this thing before putting a lot of money into it. Will there be demo units in places like Best Buy?

Gross. You would really put a Best Buy public demo unit on your face? That's just asking for pink eye or something more nefarious.

So one person can't notice the screen door effect and another says it's much reduced.

Highly doubt its no longer noticeable but that was a big bugbear of dk2.

Will await more feedback.

One consistent point I've heard repeated from tech outlets who have tried the CV1 is that after 30 seconds you don't think about the resolution or screen door whatsoever. That is certainly not the case with DK2, where you're basically constantly aware of it.

The thing is already sold out till June?! Gat dayummm. But I thought VR is DOA?

It's not indicative of VR being a success, not by any means, but it's a good start.

Word of mouth over the next few months from owners will be important as will dropping prices for hardware in the next couple of years.

Really hope it takes off and gets cheaper.

31X here. I am hoping after they sort through all of the bots/scripts and cancel those, I have a shot at March. Either way, there's not much of a difference between March 28th and April anyway.

Glad to see unanimous praise for the SDE improvements. Was my biggest pet peeve with first gen VR.

It just seems in stark contrast to all the doom and gloom talks. Basically it's selling the way enthusiasts always expected, which isn't a success for VR per se, but certainly a successful launch for a first to market product. This is of course assuming people don't start cancelling preorders like crazy come March. Only time will tell

Not charging until time of shipment plays a bit if a factor there where you can reserve your spot at no cost if you decide to back out.

Sure. But that's a hypothetical issue. Rarely have I seen hardware product preorders get cancelled in droves. Something really drastic needs to happen between now and March for that. Worst case scenario would be a ton of it going up on ebay and the likes. There will be some correction once they identify all the bot purchases, but I don't expect that to be a significant percentage.

The DOA talk is people talking out of their ass, that's it.

It's too soon to tell one way or another.

I'm sure we will see a lot of cancellations though simply because it's a lot of cash to spend.

If we're getting to almost 2 million preorders (unless my reading comprehension is embarrassingly bad) in less than 48 hours, I'd argue it's selling much, much faster than even the most optimistic enthusiasts would've predicted. Especially after the price reveal.

I think the xxxx part of the number is random so we can't be totally sure of the numbers. In any case, if they have booked the initial stock they built up and the following 3 months, it means is selling very well.

Accusing people of shilling now, cute.

You have got to realise that impressions from r/oculus are likely to be kind of biased, right?
I mean, surely this isn't your first experience with hotly anticipated products.

It sounds fantastic, obviously. But it's wise to take it with at least a tiny grain of salt.

Yeah, that's the main reason I said If, because I wasn't aware of how the order numbers actually worked, though there does seem to be some correlation between how early you ordered and what your order number is.

Yeah I highly doubt it's 2 million. That would be ridiculously insane, if true. There must be some randomization/seeding going on there instead of a straight sequence.

I believe I read somewhere that in the xx xxxxx order number format the first two x's likely denote a production run, with the subsequent x's being an identifier in the production run. Which I assume is 5 digits for future scalability rather than that they're actually producing up to 100,000 units in a single run.

I know of other places that use very similar systems so makes the most sense to me.

r/oculus is kind of official VR reddit site (or at least it's several times bigger than the rest), they also post impressions of Vive or news about other VR stuff or whatever.

Audio:CV1 is a clear winner in this regard, I am a bit of an audiophile and have 10+ different headphones including a Bang & Olufsen set, the CV1 was comparable to most high end audiophile headphones I own in terms of sound stage and balance of sound. The usefulness of the uniformity of the CV1 headset's cans were apparent, directionality and "positioning" of sound in the CV1 demo was noticeably better than the Vive, which felt like the crude circular directionality and distance drop off in magnitude that we are used to in regular games. In the CV1, 360 degree spherical directionality and much better distance differentiation was possible.

I'm going to need to see some receipts. Most audio is in the ear of the beholder and most headphones equipment in general is overpriced, but B&O isn't exactly on the high end. They are midrange, and depending on which model he is talking about they might be lower.

I'm hoping for a good headset experience but I'm not expecting hi-fi sound. Can you use your own headphones somehow and connect to their DAC?

Na, Luckeys said you'd have to do some hardware hacking and their DAC isn't capable of driving anything other than low impedance headphones well.

I've always known B&O as the premium Beats.
Nothing like Bowers & Wilkins, Polk Audio etc.

Good to know, thanks for the explanation. In retrospect, that would be an insane amount of rifts to produce for 3 months.

I want to own some B&W P7's one day. Those never drop in price!

Buying the Fostex TH-X00 already hurt my bank account.

I would eat Quail if they sold 2 million units to regular consumers already.

Palmer said that the headphones are on the same level as Audio Technica ATH-AD700X.

I'll probably stick to my Sennheiser HD 650's, but it's good for people who don't have good headphones.

How much of a difference is there between a Google cardboard and an oculus rift? I have google cardboard and I'm not impressed at all. Does the extra technology in the oculus rift make the all the difference? Or is it only slightly better?

The difference between them is vast.

The rift is a nice Mercedes, and Google cardboard is a cracker you can nibble on as you walk to wherever you might have otherwise driven to in that Mercedes.

As someone who did not receive an order confirmation but did get an order number, I can no longer look up my order with my order number an my e-mail. It says an e-mail is sent but I never receive it.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Uh. The difference is insanely huge.
Think the weapons capability of a fighter jet vs paper airplane.

I think a reasonable estimate for the current amount of preorders would be ~100-150k. Given there's 19 current runs scheduled (if that assumption is correct) that corresponds to something like 6500 units a run, they said they produce at a rate of 100 units an hour so a net 65 hours of manufacturing for a production run seems reasonable.

You, my friend, have excellent taste in headphones. I'm kicking myself for missing out on the first drop of these.

It physically hurt my head to watch my relatives giving each other Beats for Christmas and acting like they were trading the keys to a Rolls Royce.
