Should NetherRealm make a Horror Themed Fighting game?

So, NetherRealm (in Mortal Kombat (MK9) and Mortal Kombat X) have introduced as DLC classic horror/sci-fi horror fighters. Just like Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was sort of a precursor to Injustice: Gods Among Us, I wonder if the inclusion of horror/sci-fi horror characters/creatures is them testing the waters to see if such a game would be viable with those types of characters/creatures. Would you want to see them make one? Right now, we've had characters/creatures such as Freddy Kreuger (A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise), Jason Vorhees (Friday the 13th franchise), Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise) Alien (Alien franchise/Alien vs Predator franchise), Predator (Predator franchise/Alien vs. Predator franchise). The characters in MKX (not sure about MK9) just are essentially skins over specific default MKX characters (i.e. Alien uses Baraka's move set). I would assume each character would get new move sets in a standalone horror fighter. I think some other characters that would need to be added (if they could get the rights) would be Michael Myers (Halloween franchise), Pinhead (Hellraiser franchise), Ghostface (Scream franchise), Candyman (Candyman franchise), The Creeper (Jeepers Creeper franchise), Chucky (Child's Play/Chucky franchise), Leprechaun (the Leprechaun), etc. I'm sure I missed some. But again, should NetherRealm make such a game (if possible) and, if so, would you want them to?

As long as it doesn't have a cameo appearance from Scorpion.
It will

Also, OP almost looks like a list of tags for a youtube video or something.

Said this many times but yes, not sure the logistics of whether or not this can be a thing though. Assuming plenty of the characters would be owned by different companies and what not and I'm not sure how many would want to play ball.

tHE BEST HOrror themed fighting game is the Darkstalkers series.
If you got a PS3, or 360 go buy the Darkstalkers collection, that's about the closest you can get to a horro themed fighting game.

I should note that, if anything, I could see them potentially adding Michael Myers next. There are rumors that New Line Cinema might be picking up the Halloween franchise. The remakes of Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street were both released by New Line Cinema. Why is this relevant? New Line Cinema's parent studio is Warner Brothers. Warner Brothers also owns NetherRealm. This is probably why both Freddy and Jason were the first horror characters announced for each of the past two Mortal Kombat games. That's why NetherRealm was also able to do Injustice: Gods Among Us. DC Comics is also owned by Warner Brothers. Funnily enough, the Mortal Kombat movies were released by New Line Cinema back in the day.

I remember there being an unofficial horror themed fighting game that some guy/people made. Straight up had sprites that were similar to the original MK games too iirc. If Netherrealm is going to make a horror fighting game, it should be something like that.

Edit: it's the post below!

They could hire the Terrordrome guys and make an official game.

Is this true? I thought they were all unique fighters with varying styles and specials. How can Alien have Baraka's moveset when he does things like a tail swipe or calls in a second Alien to attack?

Yes, they definitely should. Using UE4, only on PS4/XB1/PC.

I actually had a dream about them making a Horror fighting game, it was so fucking badass. It also had guest characters; Pyramid Head and Nemesis. Ever since then it made me want it even more.

- Jason Voorhees
- Freddy Krueger
- Micheal Myers
- Leatherface
- Pinhead
- Chucky
- Xenomorph
- Predator
- Ash Williams
- Samara

Etc.

It's not really true, no. One of Alien's variations is based off of Baraka (the justification for this is that in the MK universe, the Xenomorph chestbursted out of Baraka), but every single other horror DLC character is either completely or largely unique from a moveset perspective.

A lot of people seem to think that Alien is a Baraka clone based on appearance alone.

Don't know why, the trailer today showed otherwise.

Correct. Killer Instinct needs a mention too. Sure we could still use a good Ninja Scroll fighter too. Whenever DiCaprio wants to pull that production trigger, I hope he goes with Warner Brothers. I'd like to see that marketing synergy NRS.

I would take this in a different direction -

What if NRS made a horror themed fighting game that was comprised of 100% original characters? You could argue that's already what MK is, but I'm talking about more monsters and ghouls than humans.

What they should do is Injustice 2.
But if they absolutely want to make a horror themed fighting game they should get it out of their system and no longer stuff these guys in Mortal Kombat where they don't belong. At all.

No they're not. Have you even played MKX?

No I haven't. I simply trusted that people in the games press that said the DLC were simply skins were accurate. I guess they were not.... which is really not a surprise.

I actually haven't watched that new trailer yet. I'll take a look at it.

The sale of MK to Warner Brothers was a damn good thing for all parties involved. Interesting post. I never did find out how these specific licensing deals might have happened. Thanks for sharing this.

If it gets them to stop making shitty guest DLC characters, then I'm all for it. That wouldn't happen, though, it makes them more money.

It would be the first NetherRealm I'd buy, and I'd buy it SO happily.

I mean, I thought I'd feel the same about them doing a DC fighting game but after borrowing and HATING MK vs DC, they kinda lost me there.

I then borrowed Injustice and also hated it whoops

If there was anything compelling me to buy a NetherRealm game, it would be their DLC. Their DLC characters are amazing. Freddy? Jason??? DUDE LIKE WHAT

even though out of the 4 Friday the 13th movies I've seen, I can only say the best one is "terrible but has the greatest twist in all of cinema" and I didn't like the original Nightmare on Elm Street that much.

I like MK characters in my MK game. I find horror movies incredibly boring, so these guest characters are a complete waste to me.

My preference for games they would start working on, in order:
1 - Injustice 2 (the first one really surprised me at how fun it was/it was a party game at my place. Non fighting game fans loved it and I'd love to see the over-the-top super hero combat with MKX's engine);
2 - Mortal Kombat XI (X is one of my most played games this gen. I'd love to see where they can take the series with a pretty solid foundation they've already built, netcode aside);
3 - Horror fighting game (Yeah, they could probably do a really good version of it. But Jason, Leatherface, Predator and Xenomorph are three characters that just aren't grabbing me as characters I want to play. Maybe that's because they feel like marketing tactics not part of the game, but I also think, in their own game, my interest just wouldn't be held beyond the initial fun factor. That said, a campy single player campaign could be hilarious).

They should buy up the rights to Thrill Kill (I think that's what it was called, the old fighting game that never got finished because of gore or something).

Could be an interesting idea with stage hazards and stuff, kinda like a bloody 3D Smash.

I'm surprised more games haven't gone the Bushido Blade route of making party fighters that can kill/ko instantly with the right conditions. My friends and I used to have a blast playing those types of games.

Hmm. I love this idea! Don't forget about The Tall Man from the Phantasm series, though! Angus Scrimm (the actor who portrayed him) sadly just passed away actually. R.I.P.
