Man, I watched a lot of mainstream movies this year...

Since I've seen 2 4 movies that came out in 2015:

1. Mad Max Fury Road
2. It follows
3. Spy

The other one is The Force Awakens which was good but not amazing so I'm mostly just voting against Stumpokapow :p

In all seriousness Fury Road is one of the best action movie of all time. I usually wait til a movie stands the passage of time to confirm but fuck it, this is one is a goddamm miracle. Only movie I've seen this year that I immediately wanted to watch again.

I'd be hard-pressed to think of a better D-BOX experience than Gravity or Mad Max over the past three years.

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
2. The Visit
3. Ex-Machina

I didn't see many 2015 films (clearly), and everything except Star Wars was a free pass. Might as well throw M. Knight some points because The Visit was decent and after The Last Airbender I know he could use the internet equivalent of a hug.

First year in a while I will actually have a full list. Best year since 2007 to me.

Films I saw and would recommend.
Dope, Ex Machina, Furious 7, Mad Max, Tomorrowland, Inside Out, Sicario, Jurassic World, Everest, Rogue Nation, Man named Uncle, Straight Out of Compton, Beasts of No Nation, Steve Jobs, The Martian, Bridge of Spies, Dressmaker, Peanuts, Creed, Karmpus, The Big Short, Star Wars VII, Hateful 8, Kingsman, and Revenant.

1. Sicario - The entire film is a slow burn with a hell of a lot of tension on who to trust. Deakins makes sure everything is beautiful shoot. The action is quick, but extremely well done. It's a damn shame it is being ignored for awards season.

2. Everest - I was really looking forward to this film and it delivered in spades. It really enforced the idea that even though with our advances in technology and ego. The mountain is still king. It was depressing, hopeless at times, and seeing it on the big screen was a most.

3. The Martian - Where both Interstellar and Gravity failed, this succeed. Scott's best film in a decade.

4. The Big Short - Beautiful acted and one of the few films meant for a general audience, but very educational at the same time.

5. Mad Max - You really think this wasn't going to be on it?

6. Dope - Sort of like how Martian succeed after a few others. I feel like this film succeed much better than Dear White People at getting its message across. Coming of age story that puts in an endearing cast that does do a really good job at blending that line between your own prejudices, even though they spell it out at the end.

7. Beasts of No Nation - Modern day Apocalypse Now and in some ways better. One of the few films where the child actors don't hinder the film, but rather elevate it. Still my favorite acting performance of the year.

8. Creed - This is how you continue a franchise years after. Balboa was the perfect end to Rocky, this was the perfect beginning to Creed.

9. Peanuts - While I know Inside Out will be sweeping. This is a film that shouldn't exist. It's a film that stays loyal to the original comics and builds on 50 years of history. It's a love story to Peanuts while at the same time bringing some nice closure to it.

10. Hateful 8 - I loved the fact that it is Taratino doing RD again, but using all the skills he acquired since.

It's a pity that UK release dates mean films that I'll likely love, e.g. The Revenant, Creed, The Assassin, are 2016 films for me. Whiplash was the same last year but, looking at the results, it did alright without me. Maybe I'll exclude Whiplash - comfortably in my top five for 2015 - and include The Hateful Eight - the only 2016 film I've seen but one I like enough to include in last year's top ten.

In fact, it may have been down to the lack of new films I saw this/last year (only thirty-one if I include Edgar Wright's previously impossible to see A Fistful of Fingers) but it seemed like a particularly weak year for film with only a few standouts. Financially, it obviously did record numbers, which just makes me more forlorn.

2. Turbo Kid
Winner of the "So Glad This Is Amazing" Award
Turbo%2BKid.jpg

“Mad Max meets Mega Man with 80s synth and cinematic sensibilities and violence to spare.” Immediately after being introduced to the film by Red Letter Media, I had incredible expectations for it and I’m esctatic to say that Turbo Kid exceeds in every regard. A simple story told in a loving way can make a film very compelling, but Turbo Kid went the extra mile of being visually striking and surprisingly unique to spare. The film draws inspiration from many sources, and while one may think that approaching the material with laughter would be the intention, Turbo Kid surprises with a sincere love letter to the 80s. The film is simply about joy and what a joyous movie it is. An incredible film and one that I can’t wait to see over and over again.

I can't help but feel I'm being tricked but I just bought a copy of this off of Amazon and will report back. I hope you're happy!

Me, I'm just glad that some people have Spy on their list. Movies rarely cause me to crack a smile but Spy had me doubled over and holding my stomach. It's a shame Miranda Hart was in it but you can't have everything.

6. Spectre
7. Jurassic World

Other movies I saw this year include Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jupiter Ascending and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., but I felt neither deserved a spot on this list. Haven't watched the Revenant yet, because it's only getting released at the end of January here.

10. The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,

And a shitload of honorable mentions that may as well be on in my top ten in other years- Mad Max, Jurassic World, Age of Ultron, Furious 7, etc. Awesome years for movie.

edit: You know, fuck that, I'm replacing Star Wars with The Man from UNCLE in no.10 on my list.

1. Mad Max: Fury Road
2. Furious 7
3. Kingsman: Secret Service
4. Circle
5. Ex Machina
6. American Ultra
7. Inside Out
8. The Force Awakens
9. The Hateful Eight
10. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

I think the saddest part of my list is that while I'm a huge Bond fan, Spectre didn't even rank my top ten. So disappointing. Still may see Revenant and Hateful Eight so who knows what the final list will be.

EDIT: First edit before the deadline - saw both Hateful Eight and Ex Machina this weekend and both are definitely top ten material for the year.

The only three films I went to see. I love films but god I hate going to the cinema, the only thing worse is public transport, and I haven't been on that in at least a decade.

Looking forward to the home release of some of these excellent movies in 2016.

My list is a work in progress, because there are a bunch of movies I still need to see and this will change, except for my number 1. I loved Sicario, and don't see anything topping it.

6. The Duke of Burgundy

8. Eden,
9. Spotlight
10. Steve Jobs

Honorable mentions: The Damned: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead, Bridge of Spies, Youth, Phoenix, Tangerine

I could also include Mommy, Selma, Leviathan and A Most Violent Year as all of those got a release in 2015 here but I feel like it would be wasting votes since most people voted for them in the previous voting thread. These polls always but the smaller (and later) releases at a disadvantage because their votes are split to two different years.

The worst:
1. The Cobbler
2. Aloha
3. Jupiter Ascending
4. Tomorrowland
5. Blackhat

There's no rule stating that you can only include movies released in your region last year, so why not just hold off on posting your list until the last couple of weeks? That's what I'm planning on doing, since The Hateful Eight and Spotlight don't come out in NZ till later this month.

I'm going to do that but there are still plenty of films that haven't been released by that date where I live (Finland).

Son of Saul, Room, Brooklyn and Anomalisa are all March releases in Finland.
