I couldn't help but think of more dumb puns.

Detective Pikachu OT | Chu Detective

Detective Pikachu OT | Pika Deca

Detective Pikachu OT | PikaSleuth

Detective Pikachu OT | A Detective that really does Catch Em all

I just don't understand the love for Pokémon as a stable of characters.

The mechanics of the games proper are compelling but I have no interest in watching any of the paper-thin creatures get saddled with any more purpose than waiting until I call them out of a pokeball.

Eh. Would've been funnier with him saying

'Pika Pika chuuuuu'

and the kid sidekick translating everything
'so you're saying that he murdered her with the pokeball in the living room?'

I thought pokemon (other than meowth) only spoke what they are?

From what I remember, Mewtwo/Slowking can communicate through human languages because they're pyschic. Lucario can do the same through "Aura"... I'm not sure what that means though.

And since Meowth that himself how to speak, maybe other Pokemon just don't try hard enough.

That right there is a dame to kill for...

So what are the cases going to actually be about? Certainly not murders, right? Though I guess Detective Conan is a kid show, so maybe they would go that route?

OK, no way am I in the same worldline I woke up in this morning. This must just be Reading Steiner screwing me over.

Seriously, though, this looks hilaridorbs. Hope it comes west and is actually a fun game beyond it's bizarre premise.

The twist at the end of the game will be that the detective does sound like a regular Pikachu to everybody but himself.

isn't there like over 150 pokemon? how can it be that none of them can speak simply because they "don't try hard enough"?

Pokemon Snap is kind of a, sort of, FPS.
Snap is a legitimately great on-rails FPS. And there's also Dream Radar when you think about it. :p

Oddly enough, the one big genre Pokémon truly hasn't experimented with is the Platformer. You could say that PokePark is a very, very lite Action-adventure game of sorts, but no real Platformer, side-scrolling or otherwise. One can even argue there's a Survival (though not necessarily horror :p) game along the lines of Typing of the Dead in Typing Adventure.

Wait, does the first case really involve head decapitation? Source?
He was referring to Detective Conan, in which in the first episode: the victim is decapitated on the rollercoaster using fishing line.

Despite being "family friendly", 99% of the cases in Detective Conan are murders and many are rather bloody or otherwise shocking (hanging and so on)

Actually...

Pokémon Race mini is essentially a platformer

*Pikachu enters the crime scene*
Detective: "Looks like the gym leader was murdered in cold blood. Brutally beaten to death by an unknown Pokemon from an unknown trainer. No signs of Team Rocket involvement. Ugly scene..."
Pikachu: "Pikachu!"
Detective: "Haha yeah, talk about badge judgement am I right?"

The thing with Meowth learning the human language is that he exerted so much effort in doing so that he wasn't able to learn Pay Day, his species' signature move, so I'm not sure whether other Pokemon see the benefit in going through the effort to talk clearly with humans if they have to give up one of their vital moves.

Having said that Pokemon already do speak, just not in a language many humans can understand, and like real life languages their language able to be learned since the speech patterns are consistent. Take Pikachu for example, whenever you hear him say Pikapi during a conversation he's referring to Satoshi (Ash), when he says PiPi-kachu he's referring to Team Rocket and when he says Pika-Pikachu he's referring to or introducing himself. It's honestly easy to pick up and if someone wanted to go through the effort to master the Pokemon language they could.

meowth doesn't speak in the non-anime appearances?

No pokemon speaks in non-anime appearances outside of the mystery dungeon games where every pokemon speaks.

Even in the anime, the only Meowth that speaks is Team Rocket's Meowth, the rest just make noises.
