NeoGAF Anime of the Year 2015 Results

Wanpaaaaaaaanch!

Great results in my opinion. Some might say that 2015 wasn't so good a year, but there was a lot of fun stuff to watch as usual.

In a weak year a bunch of standard popular shows end up ranking. Other than Soma being so high, nothing here is really that appalling.

I don't think 2015 was a weak year - at least, my top 10 TV anime were all things I'd rate as 8-9 out of 10, which is better than either 2013 or 2014 for me. But there again, I'm pretty divergent.

*ahem* sorry. Glad one punch man topped the list. Didn't the new Lupin show start Last year though? That show is fantastic. And its fucking gorgeous too. Surprised it doesn't even have a mention anywhere. Barely anyone here mentions Lupin though so im guessing its just not very well known on these forums.

Wouldn't it have to finish airing that year first though?

Lupin had a pretty screwy streaming issues as well. Combine that with its a series with a huge history to catch up on kind of hinders it in a vote like this.

All this Gundam hate in so weird. I think IBO is fine, its better than any "real" gundam series from Wing on although thats not saying a ton. And GBF was a legitimately great series, not just for Gundam but actually great. G-Reco though... the less said the better.

Lupin couldn't be found on any of legal streaming sites until very recently, I imagine it'd do better without that handicap.

This was my opinion as well.

Really, really surprised not to see Kekkai Sensen or Yuri Kuma on the list. Non Non Biyori and Koufuku Graffiti didn't make it either, but I'm not too surprised there.

For real, I think IBO is better than any Gundam tv series since... wait let me go back a bit... holy shit, since Turn A? Wow, been so long.

Glad that OPM won and that SOMA is so high :)

Also didn't know that IBO orphans was even eligible for voting, since it didn't finish yet. Would definitely put it in my top 5.

The only real tragedy here is the lack of any Animator Expo shorts in the movie top 5. Bureau of Proto Society, Diary of Ochibi, Hammerhead, and Kanon are all pretty fantastic and well worth watching.

Gundam the Origin is pretty good so far.
Ah yea, Origins isn't bad (though I'm not sure how 'gundam' every one would consider it to be seeing how there is next to no actual mobile suit battles thus far) I was more meaning TV series.
Glad that OPM won and that SOMA is so high :)

I think in the future shows should only be eligible if they have finished airing that year.
How did eligibility work again? It doesn't have to finish airing that year?
As long as a single episode aired in the year I believe it was eligible. Kind of silly.

Super solid list. Loved all of these. This list is super similar to mine too, I think this year's winners were pretty clear from the get go.

For TV, the show has to have at least some episodes that aired in 2015. It could have started in 2015, finished in 2015, or be a long-running ongoing series that neither started nor finished in 2015. For movies/shorts, it has to have had a disc release (or web, and theatrical could count too if you want) in 2015.

Haikyuu making the top ten almost makes me want to give it a chance. Almost.

Otherwise this list is not shocking at all. Garo was robbed though, I am sad.

I was hoping to see Wagnaria in the top ten myself.

Anime stuck between two years usually have it the worst since some people feel they can give a more accurate vote the next year when hype has died down. They usually give me problems when deciding my top ten too...

One Punch Man was a worthy winner but Shirobako was too, so them make the top two spot pleases me. A strong year for anime and animation in general, 2016 has a lot to live upto.

On a side note, One Punch Man, Shirobako and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure appear in the same rankings on my list.

I imagine that most people who voted in that section DID vote for Animator Expo shorts, but there were so many and with so many different flavors they all fell off to more consistently voted things like LWA and... wait, how did Digimon and the Psycho-Pass movie get on this list..

Did you read those write-ups? They read like it's the second coming of Citizen Kane when it's really just a soap opera in space. And it hasn't even finished airing!

Garo was robbed!

Granted, almost no one watched Garo but it was damn good shit

It really was. Was kinda hoping that it would sneak to the top ten as those that voted for it put it to the near top of their lists but it seems it just had too few votes. Shame.

Sad not to see My Love Story/Ore Monogatari and Your Lie In April/Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, but you know, it isn't like I bothered voting either. All in all, good job picking good and popular 2015 anime, GAF!

For those that haven't watched these two yet, some random thoughts from me:

My Love Story is possibly the best High School romance of all time, and I'm working my way through a ton of the ones I haven't seen yet. In the words of "The Princess Bride", this one left them all behind.

Your Lie in April is kind of (okay, heavily) story predictable, sure, but I felt it deserves a spot because of the stunning animation and soundtrack. Watching it in tandem with Shirobako was definitely... interesting, to say the least.

Soma, One Punch Man, and Oregairu were definitely the standouts of last year, so nice to see they were all in the top 10.

(Shirobako is fantastic too, but it's a 2014 anime in my mind)

Oh come on, that's kind of silly. With the exception of long running series that last way beyond two-cour, it should at least be "finished in 2015" as a requirement.

I was confused and thought that Iron Blood Orphans finished already.

It really was. Was kinda hoping that it would sneak to the top ten as those that voted for it put it to the near top of their lists but it seems it just had too few votes. Shame.

The
Leon Vs Alphonso fight
was the absolute apex, both in animation/choreography as well as character development and plain emotional weight, by far my favourite fight of the year.

Well people still seem to think shit like JoJo's is any good.

I wouldn't mind having "finished airing in the year" as a requirement, but then you would get people angry they couldn't vote for things like Jojo (the first season of which straddled two years), and you'd be dealing with the ever more arbitrary distinction between split-cour and straight 2-cour shows.

Episode 18 was fabulous, but there were other incredible peaks as well!

People enjoying things is absurd!

Considering 90% of the people who value Citizen Kane as a film only do because they read somewhere about how good it was makes me hope that IBO never ends up as the second coming of Kane. It's also a pretty poor comparison considering none of those write-ups mention a fundamental change in the way anime is created and viewed.

I just released the Garo: Animation Movie coming out this year is based on the first series. My day as legitimately been made.

2015 was a pretty decent year overally but the Ova/movie section was definitely lacking.

No Garo?

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Especially since Gundam somehow made it on the list.

Glad Death Parade made it on though. Wish it was higher, but thatll do. OPM winning with Shirobako in second place is fine by me! Shokogeki was great too, so I'm glad its high up.

Never heard much of Sound!Euphorium, maybe I'll give it a try?

It's very good and I don't normally watch kyoani drivel.
