Far Cry Primal Review Thread.

Damnit, the hype go to me. Along with the great price of $35.99 on GMG, I couldn't resist and pulled the trigger on the PC version. Both previous games ran great for me, so I hope this does too. Seems to have some amazing graphics and animations.

Looks like I don't mind the Ubisoft formula because I've played the shit out of Far Cry 3 & 4, every Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell and even Watch Dogs.

Now debating whether I should pick up Division as well. I enjoyed the beta, but not sure I'll have the time to sink into it in.

End of March, beginning of April is gonna be packed, including Oculus Rift stuff and games I am really looking forward too like Quantum Break, Dark Souls 3, and Uncharted 4.

since this is kinda becoming the OT for this game:

Really enjoying my time with it so far. (4%, 2hours in)

The 'detective vision' was a big mistake imho.
I hope that as soon as i put have all those skills that mark resources, plants and stuff on your minimap, i'll feel less need to use it.
Also, it (currently) feels somewhat clunky to go from ranged to close quarters combat (due to brutes charging you). I hope there's gonna be some skills later that alleviate that. Pressing /\ to put away the bow and switch to the last weapon (often times it's the spear, when i actually want the club) ... just doesn't feel all that great.

Also, quick question:

there's a "?" 300m north of the starting cave which is yet another cave that has its entrance blocked by thick pieces of wood that i can neither smash nor burn (they burned and got charred) - how would i get inside or is that some kind of gear-gating.

I really hate them for adding the 'rare #resource#' thing, because it makes me pick every single resource node. And i'm not turning off loot animations for immersion purposes.

Also, i killed a bear. with 2 spears to the face.
Also, i got killed by a 2nd bear, because i ran out of spears.

Hey OP, can you change the MC score for PS4 to 77. It's been that for a few hours now.

I mean, I don't like it when people can't wait to be the first to open up a new review thread, seconds after the embargo has opened, but can't be bothered to update later on.

On repeat.

Looks really great on PS4. Gotta give the props to Ubisoft, the Dunia Engine has been an amazing engine overall, at least on consoles. Their AA solution is very good, and characters models and facial animation are outstanding.

What hype? No one can even be bothered making an OT for it. The PC price is tempting though.

About half an hour in, atmosphere is amazing. And damn, it's so pretty.

yeah the fact there are no guns or cars really makes me want to explore the world. I am loving it so far!

EDIT

So I am guessing this is the OT, thats very depressing. I actually feel sad for ubi, two of the best games in the series are gonna be sales stinkers because of apathy (syndicate and primal)

5 hours in on Hard difficulty and no HUD. This game is so good! The atmosphere is the best in the business especially during foggy nights. I wish more games looked like that.

Anyone playing on ps4? Is the performance good? It was a little choppy on FC4 sometimes so i wonder if that got sorted out

Well, that's what kinda happens when you burn a series out running them on a yearly feature creep slanted treadmill with largely superficial changes iterating the entries.

Na, this is actually the one entry in the series I've actually been interested in since Ubi put it on the treadmill. I loath AAA shooting mechanics, and this one doing away with guns got me interested. I'm probably going to buy it once it hits 20$ or so, too busy with Dying Light EE atm to play another game so like it.

Pointing out that yearly mass AAA style games like this tends to wear on people's ability to put up with them after a while doesn't really take a hate boner, dude =/

I'm stunned there's no OT for this game. Even super niche Japanese games that sell 100 copies get OTs.

honestly, i was just waiting for someone to copy-paste the FC4 OT, do a strikethrough tag around everything and then add a picture of a burning torch.

would've been fine with that.

I didn't expect critics to take to this game but it might find an audience anyway because the setting is a bit more unique than we're used to.

I'm on the fence with this. How long is the game? Are the APEX stuff available in game or only for that edition? I've never played a FC game before. The setting is just so damn interesting and it looks cool. But is it enough?

Halp GAF!?

I'm slowly making my way through FC4, have a question about Primal. I fucking hate the hunters in 4, am I right in assuming that since there are no guns and the game seems to revolve around control of beasts, that there would be a lot more in Primal? Watched the XB1 performance analysis, looks like it runs nice and smooth, but that melee combat looks terrible.

When this was announce I got bashed really hard here because I didn't find it very appealing.

I have to say i want to play this a lot more than I ever did for Farcry 4.

Fistbump to nohud brother

when doing nohud, do you also refrain from using 'detective vision'?

because not having markers on the map would make me stick in that ugly vision mode even longer, i'm afraid.

Also, mind if i repost a quick question?

that cave made me super anxious!

I have turned everything off aside from the minimap and I am absolutely enjoying this.

It is definitely Far Cry but the sense of danger and having to hunt for your food makes it that much more engaging and atmospheric because you need to get up close and personal.

Yeah, it is a little surprising. I guess it's reflective of the overall disinterest in the game, as normally games like this are reserved months in advance.

would've been fine with that.

That would actually be a pretty funny meta-joke. Why not go for it?

EDIT - also, I will probably pick this up, but I can wait for it to hit £15. I liked FC3 a lot and also bought Blood Dragon, but I never played FC4 as its price has always remained fairly high. I figure now that I might as well just wait on Primal rather than getting FC4, as I find the premise and environment much more interesting.

Speaking of food. I like the fact that you can assign a certain kind of food to your "quick heal" toggle.

I always hated consuming syringes for just topping off my health that is just lacking 1 bar.

now you can assign "primitive heal" (the 'crack your knuckles' one) to your default heal and not waste herbs or meat when you're not in danger.

Man the price difference between the standard and Apex Edition is like £4. Might as well go with the Apex.

The moment I realized that those green leaves were ancient history I had a smile on my face. It was one of the most annoying things in the previous Far Cry titles.

Disclaimer, I have purchased, and enjoyed FC2, 3 and 4, so I guess you could call me a "fan" of the series, but

I am still not sure what, apart from the (unique) setting this offers over FC.

Is the melee combat good?, is the story compelling?, why should I buy this?, from what I heard it has "something", but that something appears to be difficult to quantify for many, if it's just the setting, will that uniqueness wear thin?

Be interesting to see how the game is viewed a week or two down the line.

Most reviews that I've read have answered with a resounding no to those first two questions. But if those don't bother you, then the setting might be enough to compel through the Ubi formula.

Good morning my primative screwheads, listen up. Shop Far... shop Far Cry.

Ok that was terrible but we still don't have a OT do we. :(

Started game on Expert (thought there was only up to Hard) and doing no minimap. I mean, hudless is basically no minimap there's not much of a difference besides a quest marker.

Game is really cool so far. I think I'm a curse. I bought SFV (first SF I've ever bought) and it's selling below expectations more than likely. This is first Far Cry I've ever bought and it'll likely not sell well.

Think the one thing I am worried about with this game is that it might lack the cheeky humour of Far Cry 3/ Far Cry 4 (and by extension, most definitely the humou rof Blood Dragon).

Far Cry 4 was hysterical in places, especially if you understood Hindi/Urdu (and a plus if you are familiar with some of Indian pop culture) in which case the radio jockey would make you laugh every now and then with his jokes.
