I feel automapping would change the tone of the series a lot. There's a reason why games which are very similar to EO like SMT SJ and Persona Q still don't -feel- like real EO games. The manual mapping absolutely contributes to the exploration experience in EO games. Even without dual screens, I feel it is a series which will always need to be on a platform with a touchscreen to replicate that experience.

My problems with Persona Q was more to do with the automap and more to do with the fact I don't think the battle system was nearly as balanced and I don't think the dungeon visuals were very interesting.

I can see why someone would think mapping made the exploration experience, but I think you can replicate at least 90% of that if you just have good dungeon design.

Etrian Odyssey without the mapping would be just like all the other dozens of first person RPGs. The series is really nothing special without the mapping.

Something interesting to note in the leaked info, one of the screenshots shows INT and WIS instead of a TEC stat, so it looks like they're splitting the magical attack and defense components of TEC. I guess this might also mean head binds won't be so good for increasing my caster's damage on binded enemies anymore. Oh well!

First Person RPGs are kind of a limited genre nowadays from my experience. You've got mainline SMT and ... I'm not sure I can think of another modern one.

I'm not saying it can't feel like a great dungeon crawler though. SMT SJ has great dungeon design and is a great dungeon crawler with great exploration. But it just doesn't feel the same as the EO type of dungeon crawling. For me EO is not just a first person dungeon crawler, but one which tries as closely as possible to replicate the feel of oldschool graph paper mapping in digital form.

I still spent the first 10 or so hours of each muscle memorying map drawing and the whole playthrus wishing for that in those and every other grid-based blobber I've played.

Fuck, that mechanic should be standard and built for it in MORE blobber series.

Neat find! This is mixing things up as much as III did (now if Koshiro'll just hit the highs he did there...hooo lawd)

I totally get it. I'm just talking for me personally. I originally came to the series because of that stuff and I really enjoy it, but the reason I end up staying is the battle system, high difficulty and dungeon design.

If the choice is between losing mapping or getting no more EO games, I'll obviously take losing mapping. I kinda doubt Nintendo will drop the Dual Screen this time, so this might not even be an issue.

I don't see why it has to be either or though. If Atlus wants to make more EO games, they're going to make more EO games. They're not going to go "it's either losing mapping or we stop making these games!" because that doesn't make sense as any sort of business or creative decision.

I expect every single device moving forward to have a touchscreen or touch interface. Even consoles. So regardless of how many screens the next platform EO is on has, I don't see why it would ever risk losing mapping from a technical perspective. In fact, mapping the game while moving with an active overlay could be even better than what we have now if implemented well.

Mapping on a capacitive touchscreen without a stylus is more finicky than a resistive one though. Though I don't know if Nintendo will move to a capacitive one for NX, if it even has a touchscreen.

A single screen device would need a really nice active overlay to work and not be overly tedious, but that could absolutely be a good way to go. Hadn't thought about an overlay option. I was thinking more map as a menu.

Even if they go capacitive, and I don't think they will for durability and price reasons, I kind of doubt nintendo drops the stylus. It might not required, but it'd be in there as an option.

I love the mapping stuff it's so fun and arguing over what icons to use is also a great pastime. ;P

I agree. Mapping with a touchpen contributes to the PDA feel which again is part of scratching the graph paper mapping itch. Even if the platform doesn't traditionally have a stylus though, I can see EO shipping with one packed in. Maybe in an LE? :)

Extra hardware means extra costs, and capactive stylii ain't that cheap (I think). But given Nintendo's previous platforms, I think they'll stay resistive for a while more, hopefully.

The LE for EO5 is like 100 bucks in Japan. I think they'll live. But yeah I agree with Nintendo staying with resistive for now.

Proper scans are out now, and translations are starting to trickle out, as well.

  1. The biggest design conceit was the concept of story, to contrast from III's focus on seafaring and IV's focus on taking to the skies
  2. There were three main focuses in making the game: offering an unprecedented degree of character customization, designing dungeon crawling that can sate the adventurer's spirit, and encouraging discovery interspersed with hard battles.
  3. Classes were designed by drafting the races first, then brainstorming classes that could fit them afterwards.
  4. And, as previously stated, anyone not fond of voice over can elect to have every single character and class muted.

I've been looking at the world map shown in Famitsu. There looks to be a lot of locations and possibly more than one town (possibly homelands for each race?).

Squinting to see the names I see:
Mt. Dragonbone, Mt. Dragonfang(?) Mt. Thunder, [something] Volcano, Tower of Sorcery, Grand Lighthouse, Marshlands(?), [something] Rainforest, Grand [something] Desert.
and a few others I can't decipher. A good variety of locations!

So it looks the they are going to follow on from the expanded world found in 3 & 4 as opposed to only exploring the Yggdrasil in EO1 & 2. Which was expected with the original teaser image.

The map also includes some names in the surrounding seas, but I'm unsure if that would mean ocean exploration is back. Naturally with such a big world I would expect some sort of side quest exploration whether it'll be the Air balloon or something else.

"Story" being "Yar there, adventurers! There is this ancient labyrinth out back of town; those who go in real far die in some beasties' jaws! Wanna try?"

So wait the focus instead of something like sailing or flying is story? All I want is "adventurer go into the dungeon", maybe a few twists and turns. The main game hasn't messed it up so far with story so I hope they don't decided to just add more story than they need to.
Like I still liked stuff in EO4 such as
Whirlwind/Lorge and the whole empire stuff
. I guess it is very much a I'll find out when I play it kind of thing.

I'm gonna buy it anyway so whatever. Everything else has me excited. But then I remember I live in Europe...

The series has been trying to give players something to do outside of dungeon crawling for awhile, like EO III's sea puzzles, or EO IV's skyships, or even EO2U's town development. So adding a world map with other locales to visit over the course of the story isn't a big surprise. Though I'm curious how they're going to implement it.

When you put it like that, doesn't sound so bad. Visiting the other races and stuff. I mean EO4 kinda had this too.

I'm not even sure where whoever wrote that got the idea that 5 would focus on the story. I looked at the scans and didn't see anything saying something like that.

Hooray! I was a little worried about this one after it went silent for so long. Love EO; can't wait to hear the soundtrack in particular.

I'll probably wind up preordering this version too to keep my collection of Etrian Odyssey bonus CDs complete.

I like the boxart that's for sure. Though wish bunny girl wasn't there. She sucks. Damn waifu bait.
where's my big manly beast men?! Why have they gotten rid of the cool ones

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think there's been an Etrian game where you have to climb to the top of the tree? I'm going all in on space advantage end game.

Unless it was in 2, that's the one I haven't played.
