Media Create Sales: Week 8, 2016 (Feb 22 - Feb 28)

14./12. [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition <ADV> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2015.03.19} (¥2.400) - 8.251 / 676.254 (+5%)

At Media Create we are already here. Next target it's Minecraft Vita starts outselling all Dragon Quest Builders versions combined, in 1-2 weeks with the rate sales of DQB drop.

As expected: DQ Builder was able to attract a sizeable portion of DQ fanbase, while not being able of attracting the MC fanbase.

dqb would have legs if square had plans to constantly release updates and additional stuff and maybe a price drop but they are most likely focused on dqb2 and this game already sold well enough especially with the price it was released at so all in all square is most likely happy.

I think when we look at legs that last this long, it isn't a "MC fanbase" so much as the much wider mainstream casual people buying copies. The audience that doesn't care about the fact that they're buying a game that's over a year old, etc. If they were MC fans, they would already have the game, so that's clearly not the demographic buying it every week now.

It makes sense when we look at it like that. Unless you're a DQ fan who likes the extra DQ flavoring to a game like this, why wouldn't you buy Minecraft over DQB, especially considering the price difference?

Anyone know if SFV does/will have an arcade release?

It doesn't and as far as I'm aware there's been no news, but it remains a possibility.

I suspect it will eventually, and that in Japan, the absence of an arcade release will have harmed sales of the console iteration. Some may also be holding out until the game is complete too.

Shame about Hero Must Die. Wrong time in Vita's lifespan to release something like this really, would've done better in 2013 when NIS were ignoring the console.

Attack on Titan held on better than I was expecting, which is nice I guess!

Diabolik Lovers not on Media Create at all? Odd.

Kamen Raider sold nicely, 77k copies without the digital, very good!

Nice hold for AoT, a rare hold for Sony platforms.
Very good for Setsuna, the drop is the standard 80-ish % for RPGs, but the LTD is very nice for the scale of the game/new ip/low budget. With digital should be able to cross the 100k line in the end.

SFV is bad.

SMT4Final also is doing poorly.

It looks like Battrider 3 showed a little growth comparing to 2 on both wiiu and ps3. Still long ways from the first though.

I don't think those new Kancolle vita numbers are bad tbh.

Looks like SMTIVF will end with about 150k or so. Not a great result. I wonder if the US announcement is being held back because they're trying to rename it. SMTIV Final is a really awful title for attracting fans to buy a brand new game. :p

Would SMTIV-2 have been better? That's basically what it is.
I don't think they'll rename it for the west, it's just that Atlus USA doesn't really care about this IP really. I'm sure it's being localized though.

Pretty slow sales week

01./00. [PS4] Kamen Rider: Battride War Genesis # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2016.02.25} (¥7.200) - 33.195 / NEW
03./00. [PSV] Kamen Rider: Battride War Genesis <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2016.02.25} (¥6.100) - 22.303 / NEW
04./00. [PS3] Kamen Rider: Battride War Genesis # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2016.02.25} (¥7.200) - 22.280 / NEW

So much Kamen Rider. okay sales, i guess.

02./00. [3DS] Mega Man Legacy Collection <Mega Man \ Mega Man 2 \ Mega Man 3 \ Mega Man 4 \ Mega Man 5 \ Mega Man 6> # <ACT> (Capcom) {2016.02.25} (¥3.990) - 23.942 / NEW

pretty decent for 6 roms packed together. and a late release

06./05. [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games <SPT> (Nintendo) {2016.02.18} (¥4.700) - 22.032 / 63.768 (-47%)

Showing some legs. not too big a drop. unlike....

10./04. [PS4] Street Fighter V # <FTG> (Capcom) {2016.02.18} (¥7.990) - 11.206 / 53.196 (-73%)
Poor Street Fighter V. dropping fast.

19./09. [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei IV: Final <RPG> (Atlus) {2016.02.10} (¥6.480) - 6.559 / 117.316 (-54%)
15./10. [PSV] Dragon Quest Builders: Alefgard o Fukkatsu Niseyo # <ADV> (Square Enix) {2016.01.28} (¥5.980) - 8.008 / 270.190 (-40%)

SMT and Builders seem to be on their way out too

13./11. [WIU] Splatoon # <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥5.700) - 9.378 / 1.270.149 (-1%)
14./12. [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition <ADV> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2015.03.19} (¥2.400) - 8.251 / 676.254 (+5%)

The legs team getting smaller. Also quite a difference with Famitsu.
Amazing to see Splatoon keep selling despite the Wii-U stock problems. And Minecraft going up again

3DS # | 25.445
PSV # | 17.368
WIU | 5.392
XB1 | 60

Small bump for 3DS. Vita down again. Wii-U got some stock but not enough for decent numbers. Xone... What can I say? scraping the bottom of the charts.

Famitsu
01./00. [3DS] Pokemon Red / Green / Blue / Yellow _3DS Virtual Console Dedicated Download Card Special Version_ # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2016.02.27} (¥1.389) - 69.234 / NEW <80-100%>
and these are just the download cards. Makes me wonder how much it really sold.
Regardless. old pokemon still brings money

Tri-Ace's first mobile game under their new owner (historically a social games company, though they view Tri-Ace as a way to get into dedicated gaming as well) is a high production value title a la Mobius: https://youtu.be/lxWmqSFLJAk?t=34

We got a list of the top 52 mobile companies by revenue worldwide.

Since EA and Sega break out their mobile revenue, this gives us a good revenue bound for a lot of the bigger-but-not-biggest Japanese players in mobile.

Bolded companies are Japanese. Known mobile revenue for 2015 is in highlight.

We would have a few more, but this is calendar year instead of fiscal year, and not everyone breaks out mobile revenue on a quarterly basis.

1. Supercell (Western, but owned by a Japanese company)
2. King

This really makes me wish there was a weekly update thread on what is going on in the Japanese gaming scene excluding mobile stuff. Its hard to figure out what's happening there without context.

Also, daaaaamn, Xbox. 60!?

I mean, that's kinda exactly what these threads are.

Well, it makes sense that among those 1.5m+ (don't remember exactly how much the game has sold across all platforms), there is a portion of gamers that became "fanbase" and might want to look for similar experiences elsewhere. Still believing that SQEX designed DQB with Western countries in mind (after all, the development started before MC had become so big in Japan), but I do think that attracting some MC aficionados in the domestic market was also an aim of the game.

Do you mean shifts in society, things like game quality reception, or something else?

Yodobashi Camera: Wii U stock's notice

Wii U Premium and Wii U Super Mario Maker Set new shipment will arrive this Saturday 5th of March. Units are limited, and just one console per person can be bought. Pre-orders opened until they run out of units.

GamesMaya also mentioned that the new Wii U shipment will arrive this Saturday.
And I think that will be the norm for the rest of big retailers.
Wait... Why does the fucking Wii U have this kind of stock issue? That's really weird.

Three of the top five are Vita titles. This is the Vita's time to shine from six feet under!

Good idea to kill this ip, Konami.

Another case where pursuing a booming market while leaving behind all the rest wasn't partially a good idea. Momotaro Dentetsu was a big seller with little investment and it didn't make financial sense to halt the franchise especially when Wii & DS entries were enjoying 200-250k+ sales on a yearly basis.

On a month with no big release PSV can indeed get the top spots with 100-300k seller, it only shows how poor the japanese dedicated videogame market has become.

Hasn't this been the case for the past few years? Jan-Mar is typically a period where PSV gets some of its biggest releases, while the competition just enjoys the leftover from the holiday season, where PSV is usually a poor performer. In sum: nothing new to see here.

Anything that one would get from a Japanese gaming mag really. Back in the day, the Japanese gaming mag scans are what drew me to gaf. I know those won't ever comeback, but it feels that the accompanying information left as well.

A weekly catch up thread would be dope. Though I love these threads as well.

Nothing to argue there.

Cod Blops 3 sold 300k units just at retail?

That's like 3rd - 4th best selling game on the platform counting Knack right?

Gematsu does a nice job covering all the latest information these types of threads used to: http://gematsu.com/

It's overwhelmingly console/handheld focused. It has some Western news as well, but not much.

Oh, I am well aware of Sal's site. Visit it all the time and follow him via twitter. I just miss the conversations around those games from my fellow Gaf heads and seeing it alongside the other hot gaming conversations here keeps me abreast of things.

The main issue is that the interest in most Japanese games died out. The weekly Famitsu threads got progressively fewer posts until the OPs just stopped making them.

The most prominent individual games will still get threads, but most get pretty few replies.

Looking at this week's announcements, one is about new information about Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3, but who knows if that's even going to get localized, so no one bothered to make a thread.

Black Rose Valkyrie is pretty low interest too.

I'm not sure Gundam Breaker games get localized.

Project Diva's interest is mostly confined to one thread outside of the final releases.

Etrian Odyssey 5 does have an active thread though even that is only 220 posts.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2's newest thread got 20 replies.

I'm not sure if any of the last 5-10 World of Final Fantasy updates have gotten threads.

One Piece Burning Blood got a story trailer and some gameplay videos and that went about 37 replies.

It's just hard to discuss much when the spark isn't there.

That's so depressing to hear. Feels like half of the reason I got into gaming (Japanese devs) no longer get any attention. I can only see the scan ban being what was behind this, which I total understand and agree with. Thanks for the insight.
