People are going to believe what they want I guess, but dude you've been delivering scoops for years. I feel like there has to be some truth to this even if it never comes to fruition.

You also just made neogaf a shitload more entertaining today.

People have a right to be skeptical, I just like poking fun. Plus, I could be wrong? But I'm only passing on what people told me, on the foundation of having people do that (and be correct) in the past. It's exciting and interesting, either way.

I have zero doubt that this is going to happen, but maybe not in this capacity. I think a 1080p standard needs to be reached first. Nintendo's been doing it for years, why can't Sony and Microsoft?

Sony has also done this already before. People just forget. PSP 2000 had double the RAM of the original model.

Yeah, sorry. I thought you were the person I'd already replied to explaining what I meant. I I edited my post but you probably didn't see it. I shouldn't have been so hostile, my bad. I'd still say the 180 was a bigger fiasco then the initial DRM stuff though, it was so so crazy when it the news first came out! I could have been more specific though.

Ah, no worries

-MS tries a payment plan where you effectively amortize the cost of a console over 2 years.
-The big two both convert to x86.
-MS recently talking about taking mobile upgrade cycles.
-Rumors of half generational hardware increases.

Prepare for console leases structured around 2-3 year long generations.

Exactly. I'm calling for a subscription model with a similar plan. You can still go out and buy it standalone but auto upgrades at an annual fee are a nice stable source of revenue.

No one cares that much. People are hypocrites sometimes about goofy stuff. It's life.

Right, I cared to much before, it's not that serious. People are going to ignore valid points, mischaracterize intentions, avoid trying to understand, and flock to those who agree regardless. So why bother, it's just games at the end of the day.

So Yeah, I'll just enjoy the show.

Platform holders throwing out the window one of the major points why a lot of people gravitate to consoles.
Even if they garantee the current PS4 is forward compatible with PS4K games, I'm afraid the experience will be subpar.

If this is real, it better not be coming out until 2020.

Otherwise it will feel like early adopters are being screwed over.

Explain why?

Edit:Without vitriol please.

What are they throwing out exactly?

I will wait and see what benefits and improvements the new system brings. If it greatly enhances the PSVR experience, I could see this being worthwhile. I would hope they're aiming for 5+TF for the GPU.

Edit:
I can actually see both MS and Sony following this kind of model:

Fuck Sony and Microsoft if they think they can sell us bullshit hardware every year, console gaming is pretty much dead if this thing happen, I'm very angry about Sony right here, don't start to get cocky after PS4 success.

As you will further follow the story and have more talks with your sources.
It would be interesting to hear, IF it could be an upgraded version for VR reasons or if it's the strategy for the platform alltogether.

Another point would be the 4k BRs, allthough I kinda doubt they would release new hardware for that, especially with streaming getting more popular.

Yeah, I'm hoping more devs will be comfortable talking now that it's out in the open a bit. Also, the circle of people who knew about this was prettttty tiny until recently. I mean, I spoke with someone leading a major gaming franchise recently and their response was "Uh, I need to look into this." So it's pretty early, all told.

Oh so when people been talking about a Xbox One Pro (aka me) and the updated ways of hardware with consoles...some people "laughed". I hope it's true for all consoles. No need to keep these generations that long. This is exactly what a bunch of people speculated (just on the MS side based off of Phil's comments).

Now this...I do agree with. Because I was one of those that changed my mind in that MS thread.

The RRoD was an amazing thing. I learned so much about 360 hardware in those times...lol.

The Jasper mobo hunt was a real thing. And the only way to even know about it was to hang out in forums. I really dont think the general public had any idea.

Do I agree its a good thing? Dont know....but I can tell you I have bought at least 3 console revisions:

First 360 that had a Jasper mobo
360 Slim that came with the Valhalla mobo
Super Slim PS3.

The 360's I bought specifically for the mobo revision. PS3 Super Slim...because it was cheap. And I liked that it was easy to upgrade the harddrive in the PS3 Super Slim due to the harddrive setup in it. (My 80GB fat PS3 finally started dying on me... ) :-(

For those asking for the PS5, what exactly is the expectation here?

Sony damn sure aren't switching architectures. It would literally just be another graphical upgrade. system features are just that, system features. Features that we can get via software updates.

If anything, Ps4's OS and network should just be the foundation moving forward. Work on the store and expand the catalog.

If consoles are going to be like PCs, why should I pay 60-70€ to Sony for a game that is 45€ on Steam? Why would I pay 50€ a year to play online when I can play online for free on PC? Why would I buy new hardware whenever Sony decides at whatever price they decide?

I could just buy a PC, buy cheaper games, play online for free, buy the hardware I want whenever I want, buy the controller I want...

Right now, what stops me from going to PC is that I like Sonys current business model. Release a new machine every 5-6 years, all games are optimized for this machine during it's lifecycle, and in the late years developers are going to extract every ounce of power from it.

But if the generations get shorter, and developers switch focus to PS4.5 instead of optimizing for PS4, I might as well buy a PC. Shortening the console cycle destroys consoles greatest advantage: optimization.

I will wait and see what benefits and improvements the new system brings. If it greatly enhances the PSVR experience, I could see this being worthwhile. I would hope they're aiming for 5+TF for the GPU.

If they wait until 2019 though they can launch a completely new and even more fresh feeling system compared to the 2013 version.... hell it would probably have 32 GB of HBM2.5 or HBM3 by that time.

It will be again like 10x more powerful than the last PS and IMO that will be the best thing for the brand....

That's just me though. Don't fix what ain't broke. The generation PS4 took the cake going traditional and simple and that's what I loved them for....

Don't see the point of changing course.

Both manufacturers should move to a full in subscription model. Approximately $125 per year for XBL/PSN plus a console that will be upgraded every few years. Whe the new one rolls out, the sub members get an automatic upgrade and all you do is ship you console back in their prepaid box. Consoles are back compat and your saves are already in the cloud and redownloaded.

Make money in the game sales and stabilize your revenue stream with those juicy subscription fees.

I'd sign up in a heartbeat.

Hardware as a service?
FUCK THAT

So they would collect the console you used after its time has come?
You would really like that?

I think people just need to get over their issue with having to "have the best" all the time. If platform holders start doing this, they will ensure that games are all backwards and forwards compatible. It's just that after a couple of years you won't have the best console (Of your platform holder) any more. The games will work fine.

I think this is a great thing personally. If you have the money and want to spend it, you can. if not you can stay with the OG and still play ALL the games.

If they do it right, you might find your OG PS4 plays PS 4.5, PS5, and PS6 games, albeit at a lesser res and/or fidelity, thereby giving you more than standard 5year gen on your hardware before having to upgrade.

Do you really want to play cross gen games indefinitely? Forward compatible is toxic for game development.

System power. Games. Services.

Games is subjective but system power is a bit weird when no one believed that the PS4 would release with 8GB of ram. Astor services I don't really know what you're referring to. Playstation Vue seems pretty cool for US folks, Playstation Now and functional remote play are good additions to the ecosystem in my opinion.

The games?

To be honest I agree, it's been a bit of a letdown so far.

That's not to say there's not good games, it just in my opinion feel comparatively underwhelming compared to this time last generation.

Fair enough.

I'm still kind of in shock that so many are ignoring how much of an improvement 4k games are.

That shit isn't PS4.5

Thats straight next gen. Hence why I don't believe this rumor at all.

If they can reproject 60FPS to 120FPS in software what make you think they can't re render 1080P to 4K in hardware?

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
So, with the NX, PS4.5 and XB1+, this is kinda a new generation already.

How can so many people, just on page one, be for painfully long console cycles?
I'm about to sell my s6 active for 300 and get an s7 or an s7 edge for around 600 on swappa.
So I'll end up spending 300 or 400. Why? Power, features. Etc.

That's just me...

But there is no reason you all can hold on to your 1080p boxes. I'm sure this means better compatibility.

Also the reason not to get a pc is 400$ vs $1000 to $1500(if you spec out). Then you upgrade your gpu every 2 years the same way spending the same basic amount.

Everyone has a PC already, you would need to upgrade a CPU (that will last you like a long console cicle) GPU and ram at most. RAM is cheap, and GPU last quite a while too nowadays. At the end, going with PC will probably be cheaper than going to this new console scheme and you'll still have a more powerful box.

The thing is... The PS4.5 or PS4K would undoubtedly get some kind of exclusives to it because that would be a way to push normal PS4 owners to jump on the ship. It wouldn't go overboard but I bet somebody like Kojima would proudly drop a game for PS4.5 as an exclusive.

I got a PS4 a few months ago. In college, have a job. Don't play my PS4 as much as I wanna but I still love it for all the fun I'm having on it.

Pretty torn on this.... throw in PSVR and things really get complicated.

I can see it...
" now you can play bloodborne and uncharted 4 at 60 frames thanks to ps4.5"

Ty nintendo u ruined the market with ur nintendo ds revisions

Yup I would be all over this. Maybe an announcement at E3? Also interesting that he heard rumors about Xbox one.5 lol.

However the whole 4k thing doesnt sound right. Maybe it can upscale to 4k but native 4K? Nah.

The clever thing is, it's likely to enhance the PSVR experience when they release a higher res model.

If Sony does what they are doing with PSVR and says:

"Games MUST be 4K MINIMUM and NEVER drop below 60 FPS, or you're not selling it on the PS4.5" I'm buying one.

Interesting to see how this plays out, but I rather just have a new console every 5 years or so instead of upgrades in between.

This would make more sense, though I can easily see developers trying to ape more of the tablet/phone philosophy of incremental updates every 1-2 years to keep up with the PC. I think traditional console generations are nearing their end soon. NX might actually be the last "traditional" console unless Nintendo already has that incremental update bit included in their design.

let's see how the console market deals with the cellphone and tablet model

Consoles dont have the eclectic appeal and life penetration that cells and tablets have. People might not see the point

Yknow what would be nice? If this new and improved PS4 had full, real, physical and digital BC.

Don't give me that different architecture crap. Make a separate box that you can attach/connect with the console if you must. It'd be a niche device sold to avid fans.

My gut reaction is this sounds awful. One of the primary reasons I am a console gamer is the simplicity and elegance of knowing that the software I buy is optimized for the specific hardware I own. This just seems like a way for companies like MS and Sony to gouge me for money more often to play the "best" version of a game.

If I cared about that I'd game primarily on PC.

Pretty much. It does end the same though. Most people don't like the idea (obviously, it's change...most people are adverse to it). Anyways. E3 will be interesting.
