Don't call it an acquisition: Kinda Funny joins Rooster Teeth's "Let's Play family"

HAHA, I'm going to go the opposite of most gaffers I guess. Greg is cool but for the love of god keep Colin away from everything besides Kinda Funny, dude just rubs me the wrong way. I don't think even the Funhaus guys could make him bearable for me.

considering Greg never really deviates (or rather goes to heavily against the grain of) Colin's stances on things, that doesn't settle well with me.

i'm not really into Nick or Tim, and would be perfectly fine with just C&G, so with Colin taking this position on it i don't foresee much reason to watch or support them anymore.

it's actually hilariously hypocritical considering Colin's political leanings. or maybe his "join or die" tattoo was meant to be taken literally?

Colin's always been like this though, so it shouldn't come as a surprise. Greg calls him on his shit from time to time, but it's not that big of a deal. I'd rather Colin be genuine about it than be someone he really isn't.

I know RT is super popular, and I don't have anything against them. I personally just haven't enjoyed any of their podcasts/videos though I've tried to get into them. It reminds me of a lot of other bombastic youtube content that I find a bit obnoxious to watch.

I'm glad that Easy Allies exists now, my Patreon cash will probably go there now.

Seems like a pretty unfounded fear, I was a fan of Inside Gaming, Funhaus is pretty much exactly the same, same guys, humor, everything.

I must disagree with this.
Since going from IG to Funhaus, it definitely feels like they've lowered the age they target their content towards in a way that I've found quite frustrating recently.

OBNOXIOUS ALL CAPS VIDEO TITLES with 'funny' thumbnails were things I definitely don't remember being as present before they joined Rooster Teeth. A video titled "Black Cocks Down" really highlighted this change in direction to me.

I'm not saying Kinda Funny will do the same, and I'm not a big enough fan to be able to tell if they did, but I did notice a definite change after people I used to be huge fans of were acquired by RT.

Honestly my only thoughts are... if this works, i hope Easy Allies gets an opportunity like this

if it doesn't i hope Easy Allies stays as far away from deals like these as possinle

ahh okay. still though, i would hope that they would respond with the expected knee jerk reactions from the public with a little more thought and finesse.

Oh, that's not them at all, lol, specially Colin, they do have this "don't like it, gtfo" attitude, which is good for me, i'm sure not good with everybody.

They only just formed that. Give it a year.

Seems fine to me. Allows them to get extra revenue and their content remains more or less the same.

Though I always found Kinda Funny's lets plays to be the weakest thing they do. Maybe they'll improve some now.

RT still being a thing was such a shock to me a few months back. I thought they were treading water.

They've been growing at a pretty substantial rate tbh. I can't recall a time in the last 5 years where their growth has been anything but on a steep upwards trajectory.

C seemed pretty serious about it. Not everything is a joke. Somewhat like what is going on here.

To be fair, Colin was basically calling out someone who was straight-up calling them liars in the comments. Someone commented that this was clearly the early stages of an acquisition and that their content was obviously going to change, even though they were saying that wasn't happening.

Colin's "fuck off" statement was essentially "if you're going to listen to me tell you that we're not going to change our shows and then tell me I'm lying, fuck off."

Okay that makes more sense.

Fair enough but I don't understand why he even 'called' the person out if it was just going to stir the pot. Like I said before, something about this whole thing just seems off and not the KF I supported from the beginning.

Man me too. Mega64 has an authenticity that Rooster Teeth lacks, and treats their fans a lot better. Not that an acquisition would change that over night, but I just hope Mega64 stays independent. Rooster Teeth used to feel authentic in the early years, but as they've grown, they've lost a lot of it in favor of becoming a content factory, with infinite employees; that spends way too much time bragging/lamenting their struggles with "fame".

Also RT becoming a juggernaut has resulted in them going through the same decisions they've criticised other companies in general of making in the past. Bernie once said he hated how a lot of online celebs had to relocate to LA to progress their careers. A few months later they open an office in LA. Another time Bernie said he hated seeing so many online groups getting bought out by bigger establishments. A few months later they get acquired by Fullscreen.

Colin does that on a pretty regular basis. Like, at least once a week. If you say something negative to him, he's going to respond to it. He's been like that since Beyond, so I really don't understand where the shock is coming from.

Almost all rooster teeth personalities are fucking annoying as shit.

So I look forward to them in more kinda funny content.........../s

This is nothing new. Colin is on record in several podcasts and several shows telling people to fuck off or go fuck themselves, with Greg towing the real best friend line in the next beat. It's kind of hard to miss, it happens often enough. It's a bad look, but nothing for viewers to get all twisted up about either way. But lets be real, anyone who get caught up in their feels by imagining that they're actually in the best friend crowd (cha-ching) are the people that RT is creating content for anyway. Less rocket science, and more building blocks if you follow.

The guys seem to have run out of ideas for how to streamline content/ revenue and RT know how to do it. Case closed.

I just assumed Sony or IGN would take them in, kinda surprised they've been flying solo this long.

I was joking about the IGN comment but I can see them partnering heavily with Playstation NA.

Was this during the time where Colin's girlfriend dumped him or something? I can't remember exactly when and for how long he was depressed but people kept saying he was in a bad space. I'm not excusing his action, I am just trying to understand his motivation/reasoning/mentality. But I might be wrong or making up something since I here him keep on referencing someone named Erin (sounds like a girlfriend) so his down attitude might have been for another reason--assuming he wouldn't just be all depressed about a breakup and avoid moving on to only just wait for that person to return.

I didn't follow Inside Gaming but just I scrolled through their youtube videos and it doesn't seem different. It has the all caps titles (stuff like 'QUEST FOR BALLS'), wacky youtube thumbnails, and the humour seems just as juvenile.

They did that sponsored content for The Order before it released (Colin and Greg are both on record for thinking that the game sucks though), and they were the only podcast at PSX for both years, both as Beyond and as Kinda Funny. I'd be genuinely shocked if they didn't do sponsored content for Uncharted 4 soon.

Think about it this way...the KF guys were at THE gaming media powerhouse website. They learned how to produce content in a world where they had the best equipment and a large team around them. If you believe them, which I do, they now struggle to get out 18-20 videos per week, half of which are shorter edits of a longer shoot (GoG Show and KF Gamescast).

Partnering with a group that started small and has grown into the type of organization they probably see themselves as five years down the road gives them a lot of insight into how they can break up their responsibilities and improve their workflow. It doesn't mean they'll ask Rooster Teeth something like "What content will propel us forward?" Rather, it seems more like they'll be asking Rooster Teeth "What can we do to get more of our ideas into production?" If you're a fan of Kinda Funny, or any small production company for that matter, I imagine that second question would appeal to you quite a bit.

In exchange for that advice and mentorship/partnership, they're joining the businesses in a model that's already similar to how Kinda Funny operates. They use a third party store and ad sales company today already, but they will now use Rooster Teeth for those functions. They've basically invested in one another and it's in both companies' best interest to grow Kinda Funny in a way that will keep them successful and true to what's brought them this far. Alienating fans means less Patreon money, fewer merch sales, and less views which hurts the income of Kinda Funny AND Rooster Teeth. If they work together to grow sensibly, everyone wins.

Guys, remember, Colin and Greg are GAF members too, not that it should matter anyway, but I think it's best if personal attacks were kept to a minimum lol.

Serious question:

What's the difference between Kinda Funny and Kinda Funny Games that allows them to have two separate Patreon pages? Are they really that big and doing that much different content to warrant two pages?

Colin has been telling people to fuck off (and variants of that, when IGN didn't allow them to curse) for years, before his breakup with Cheryl and his relationship with Erin. It's not new and is quintessential, curmudgeonly Colin.

Kinda Funny started when they were with IGN and not allowed to talk about games. KFG started when they left IGN, and they figured there would be plenty of people who would not want to hear them talk about fucking Disney princesses and goats, so they should get their own Patreon that's just game content.

That was the reasoning stated, anyway.

I'm not too keen on the new guys for Inside Gaming either to be 100% honest for the same reason.

Maybe I'm just too nostalgic!

Edit : I think it was about February 2015 when everything switched over.

I used to watch Rooster Teeth videos religiously, but over time I grew to dislike their content. For example, when RT News or whatever that weekly segment was called turned into the awful disappointment that is The Know, and the Patch became part of The Know, I was convinced they were on a downward spiral. Achievement Hunter kept doing the same thing, except it seemed more and more like they didn't care anymore. Funhaus leans heavily on click bait and toilet humor, so them going into the Lets Play channel and even The Know is even more disappointing. I am more or less indifferent towards KF, but I hope they remain independent.

EDIT: thought my original message was a bit harsh, reworded some stuff

Man this shit is getting disturbingly personal.

Im out
Yeah, it's fine to remark on the nature of the business side of things (I'm skeptical, myself), but let's keep our thoughts on them as people and discussion of their personal lives out of it.

I see now, thanks for giving me the historical context.

Also while this thread has momentum I would like to thank whoever fixed the audio. Why was the intro music so loud either last week or the week before that. But then the mics were so low (the week with the Superman comic guy).

Never have your viewers go into your video to hear blasting loud music only to have whisper level mic pickup. .best practices for content maker targeting an audience over the age of 16.

Why are they doing this? I watch Kinda Funny for Kinda Funny, not Rooster Teeth or anyone else. Collaborating with them once in a while is fine, but making this a permanent thing?

Because they like the people at RT and there are mutual benefits? It's not like collab content is the only thing they're ever going to produce from now on.

This is an excellent summary of what is actually happening now. It seems relatively harmless and almost 100% behind the scenes stuff.

The paranoia about what might happen in the future is 100% fair game though.

Rooster Teeth is one of my least favorite gaming outlets, so if nothing else I just hope this doesn't lead to a bunch of personality spill over
