"I'm not a big fan of Xbox 1.5"-Phil Spencer

Sort of agree. IF the new iterations are that much different, they should avoid naming it close to what the current gen is. The Wii U was thought of as a slim type upgrade or like the psp go by many including myself.

It is very much worth noting he is not saying he is against the idea of iterative hardware. He just wants there to be a large jump if its going to happen, not a half measure

I agree with him. I still expect to see some kind of updated box from them at E3, whether it's upgraded or just slimmer.

I'm repeating myself but hopefully they'll just do spec bumps from now forward. No more "new generation". It's time.

Wait wut? Either he is saying the xbox 1.5 thing isn't happening or that the difference is way bigger than we think. Here we go lol.

Yo E3, shit will go down in flames this year. I can just feel it. The atmosphere will literally be lit on fuegoooo. Muy caliente.

The sentiment makes sense. If whatever they do next is backwards compatible, it may as well be the next box.

It's the difference between saying "here's our new thing that plays your old stuff" and "here's our new thing that's a way better version of your current thing, but like who knows when this one will get replaced too"

So if the next Xbox will have a significative upgrade, how would the "old" XBOs run the games releasing on the new Xbox?

Because he mentionned a forward and backward compatibilty when he spoke in February.

Sony and MS stand on incremental upgrade.

Hang on - wasn't Phil Spencer/MS the first ones to admit they were looking into an incremental upgrade for the Xbox before even the PS4K rumors got out? What the heck is this backpedaling going on right now?!?

Kind of sounds like he means whatever comes next will be a full generation leap as opposed to a half measure. Squaring that with what he's previously said, makes it sound like we'll get an "Xbox Two" sooner rather than later, with backwards and forwards compatibility through PC like scaling helped by UWP. But I'm totally theorizing there.

He doesn't seem to like anything, ever since he took over he's been announcing that he doesn't really like things.

I agree with Phil. I don't want a minor upgrade, I want a substantial upgrade.
The problem is that beyond the Polaris 10 type GPU the PS4k coukd be based(4 tflops more or less) are only the big GPUs, Fury like corresponding chips in 14 nm(Vega?).Thats too hot of a chip for a console. So or they go with something similar to Sony or wait 2-3 years to next chip process node.

This is worrying me. So he wants it to be a completely new generation basically? 3 years after the last started? Assuming you can't play Xbox 2 games (or they run terribly at least), thats even worse than incremental upgrades to me.

Microsoft is going to jump into the next gen early and call it Xbox 4, that way Sony isn't always 1 number ahead anymore.

This way Xbox 5 and PS5 launch around the same time. :)

I personally don't see why Sony is potentially doing what they are doing. They are in a good place with absolutely no need to come out with an "updated model" with more horsepower. It could backfire heavily for them.

Good

Silly idea

Wait 2 more years and then blow the top off with a significantly more powerful console

And be even farther behind the PS4, and have everyone saying they wont upgrade so soon after getting the PS4K and VR. This wouldn't be a smart move. I'd jump ship.

This could mean that they might just skip the upgrade alltogether and come out with a brand new system in 2018 or so. That would be 5 years after the xbxo one and they have shown they dont care about going a full 5 years even. See: original xbox.

Bringing out a new model of something they're trying to gently recoup and shift to PC gaming, that people still won't buy, wouldn't make much sense... no. What does make sense though, is feeding @crapgamer type concern-troll talking points.

XBox 2. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the name XB1 was purely for the sake of starting iterative hardware.

Maybe fans doesn't like the idea?

Just a thought: PS4K might be being pushed more by Sony because they would like some more power for PSVR. Since Xbox doesn't need that power right now, they could wait and get a bigger/better upgrade further down the line.

The original Xbox only lasted four years. It wouldn't be unprecedented if Microsoft went all out and released the next Xbox in the fall of 2017.

I say they are going with Xbox 10 (in terms of Windows 10).

And this will also be the "last" console (like windows 10 is the last windows) and just get incremental upgrades.

Its called spin, Sony has enough goodwill to deal with a bit of consumer backlash where as MS at this moment especially the XB division does not. I would not be surprised to see MS announce something right after or right before Sony. I do expect whatever MS announces to be more powerful than the PS4K if what Phil says is to be taken literally.

Oh well, that sucks. I guess I read into good press comments a little too much.

I'd still be down to buy a PS4K when that drops in price.

Of course they would never call their incremental upgrade an incremental upgrade. Even if it were an Xbox 1.5 or a PS4.5, nobody in their sane mind would actually name it that. That doesn't mean MS won't put out a 2x performance upgrade like the Sony rumor is, they just wouldn't consider it incremental.

Sounds good to me, I dont want a fragmented xbox. ALso don't want $500 ad-ons to the system (hope they learned from kinect).

1983 doesn't need to happen again
