R9 380 or GTX 960 come to mind. Maybe you could get lucky and get a used 970, though I don't know what the used market is like. I imagine some people will be upgrading for Pascal (which will supposedly be announced on May 31 at Computex).
alright thanks ill take a look at those cards

The 6700K will be a bit faster in most games, but the 6600K at (say) 4.4 GHz is bloody fast. You'll be limited by your GPU anyway when you're in that ballpark, so it's not really that much of an issue.

Digital Foundry has some great Youtube videos comparing the 6600K and 6700K at a variety of frequencies in a variety of games. I would check them out and judge it based on which games appeal to you.

I don't know anything about OpenGL (I do Python scripting mainly) so I cannot comment on that.

Well, the 6700K has four additional threads—additional sets of instructions that your processor switches to whenever it's idly waiting for information it needs to execute its standard set of instructions. No amount of overclocking is going to add those extra threads.

However, whether or not those additional threads make a difference is wholly dependent on the game/software you're playing/running. Dolphin, for example—which is essentially always CPU-limited, basically can't make use of these extra threads at all. Furthermore, the 6600K can often be overclocked further than the 6700K in terms of actual clock speed (how quickly it can execute instructions).

In other words, it depends. Overall, the 6700K is generally a better performing processor than the 6600K—if that wasn't the case, no one would ever buy it—but that isn't always the case, and it costs an extra $100.

TL;DR Get the 6600K.

Thanks. I didnt make a mistake with my 6600K then :p

Re: the latter, no one really knows. I think I read somewhere that they didn't think GDDR5X production was high enough to be anything more than a paper launch... but don't quote me. Maybe check out the Anandtech forums (or HardOCP), I'm sure there are big discussions on it going on over there.

Great build, though if you can I would suggest you go for faster memory (DDR4-3000 is not that much more than 2400 tbh, and games do see benefits from it). Also I would've maybe gone for an 850 Evo instead of the Kingston, but ymmv.

I'll check, but if that's the case Im just gonna pull the trigger on 2 980Ti's then.

Thanks! I did want to get faster ram but it was out of stock. It's actually a budget build, not in the sense that I wanted to keep it under a certain amount, but I had certain criteria to fill as cheaply as possible.

So I've whittled down my new PSU choices to either the EVGA GQ Plus Gold 1000W or the Corsair RM1000X. Which is better?

Functionally I don't think there's going to be much difference. I'd just go with whatever you can get for a better price, or if one has a particular set of cables you like more or something.

What is even the point of a paper launch?

I haven't been following PC hardware for that long (built my first computer last August), so I've never heard of this before. Why make a product "available" before you can actually sell it in any reasonable capacity? What's the point?

So since the Pascal early release will probably be a paper launch I need to decide on which pair of 980Ti's to get. I'm currently deciding on these:

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB FTW $879
GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 980 Ti - $839
Zotac GeForce GTX 980 Ti - $804

Im gonna be getting an EVGA GQ 1000W PSU later today

What resolution/refresh rate will you be playing at? Depending on your needs you might like the more consistent frametimes of just a single 980 Ti. In which case I'd go for a little bit faster one, either EVGA, maybe the MSI Gaming 6G, or Gigabyte Windforce model.

1080p/60hz, but Im getting it primarily for VR since each GPU can render a single eye for games that take advantage of them

Between a Fury Nano ($640 CAD) and the 390X ($540 CAD), which would be a better upgrade from the 7970? I know the Fury Nano is supposed to be faster but I'm looking at performance per dollar on these two cards too.

edit: I've got no interest in 4k FWIW

edit2: or VR

If you must get either those 2 now i would go Nano.

Quick question:

My PSU has an 8 and 6 pin power cable, which is fine for my 970 but the 980ti I was getting needs two lots of 8 pins. Is there going to be an issue if I use a 6 to 8 pin adapter for one of them?

So you don't buy the competition's product

Looking for some advice... I currently have the following build:

Win7 64bit
i5-2500K
4gb ram
GTX 560 Ti
cheapy 60hz monitor, but will be upgrading to 120hz.

I want to be able to run Doom single player well on a decent graphics level, but most importantly, I want to be able to run Overwatch at a solid 120fps (low settings is fine) on my new monitor (will be ASUS VG248QE).

Would just upgrading my video card be enough? Do I need to upgrade ram and/or CPU as well? I will not be overclocking at all. Looking to spend as little as possible but am able to spend what is necessary to achieve this. Just installed the Doom closed beta and it was not very playable.

Polaris will destroy them they know it so its a bit of damage control by throwing a half chewed bone to their loyal customers.

The 2500k is still a viable CPU if... you over clock it. Can I ask what your aversion to doing so is? Mine went to 4.5 GHz easily with a $20 cooler (212 evo). It depends on your MB somewhat, but generally it is a pretty easy process.

If you really don't want to OC, the CPU may hold you back a bit, but Id say upgrade the GPU and see how it goes. If you aren't happy with the performance, you can decide to do new mb/CPU/ram at that point.

Guys, I'm having issues with Clonezilla Live USB on my brand new i5 6600 + Asus H170M-Plus.

Basically I've tried both 32 and 64 bit versions, even resorting to failsafe, but it always hangs immediately after selecting the desired boot/video mode. Same results with a slightly (08-2015) older version, so I don't really know what else I might try. By the way, PC works perfectly with Windows 7.

Is anyone experiencing something similar? Are there any reliable, free, bootable-from-USB cloning alternatives? I've been successfully using Clonezilla for years so I haven't really started worrying about other solutions until now :-\

EDIT --> solved

Looking to build/buy a mini pc to connect to a TV. I want to run emulators and smaller, indie steam games. I don't need a powehouse, I've got a PS4 for higher end AAA games. Looking to only spend $200-$300

Any particular emulators?
When we say mini, are we talking Fractal Design Node 304 size or Alienware Alpha size?

I think even $300 is not enough to do this with an i3/GTX 750Ti build or even lesser GPU.

You'll probably want to look at getting used parts if you want a PC that cheap.

First generation i5 could be had for a pretty low price, throw it on a small motherboard with enough RAM to get you by.

Pissed off, ordered all my parts from Ebuyer last week, my order was being "processed" for ages. I spoke on twitter to someone which got my order moving.

Yodel were supposed to delivery today, didn't even bother knocking and just left a "sorry we missed you" slip. Absolute joke.. so i've had to rearrange delivery for Monday.

Complete jokers, never ordering from Ebuyer or anyone that uses Yodel again. I hope to God nothing is wrong or broken because I really don't want to deal with these companies again.

Looking for some advice, this will be the first time i have built a pc so hoping you fine people can answer a few queries in have....

1. Will 500w be eough for the CPU/ GPU setup? I am not intending to overclock either.
2. Is the CPU cooler necessary or is the stock sufficient?
3. Was intending to buy the NCASE M1 but am in the UK and import taxes would be a killer, plus it seems like a difficult case for a first time build. So can anyone recommend a decent looking mini itx case and any necessary fans?

CPU Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler Noctua NH-C14 CPU Cooler
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z97N-Gaming 5 Mini ITX LGA1150
Memory Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866
Storage Sandisk Ultra Plus 64GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card
Power Supply Silverstone 500W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular SFX Power Supply
OS Microsoft Windows 10 Home Full (32/64-bit)

Thanks!

GAF, my dad has an intel E7400 using the integrated GPU and 4gb of ram.

I'm going to give him my old SSD and was wondering if I should install windows 10 32 or 64-bit. The thing is still running XP.

1. Should be fine
2. The cooler is a high end product, unless you got a huge deal on one you don't really need something like that for no OC. On the same note, don't use the stock cooler, either.

Get like 20 posts at hexus forums and get free next day shipping at scan.co.uk. Never had an issue since and always use DPD who are awesome. Fully tracked etc. No Yodel bollocks.

Check monitor input selection

To get onboard GPU to work, you need to unplug the GTX 780

So is that i7-6700K the best match for my 980ti? Its $500 (sad face), and idk if theres one thats cheaper but still similar?

What motherboard and ram do you have? Is this just for gaming? What resolution and refresh rate will you be playing at?

You could look at the 6600K to save some dough. Check out pcpartpicker, there are better deals than Canada Computers for that CPU (mike's computer shop is the cheapest right now IIRC).

My dad has a Compaq CQ5700F which has an Athlon II 170u. He wants to upgrade the processor, but him and I are not sure what can be installed here. What's the list of compatible CPUs for this model? I believe the CPU is 95 wats and AMD 3 board, but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure lol. I'm confused looking at all the stuff available and I'm not sure what would be best paired with a 980ti. I was hoping to do some 4K (?) gaming.
