Enter the Gungeon (PS4 / PC) hits April 5th, new trailer

I've been vaguely following this one for a while, and that latest trailer plus the GMG discounts sold me.

Embargo ends on April 5th

Cheers. I guess it'll end after the pre-order discount ends so that's probably not a buy from me at launch. Not a practice I really agree with.

Assuming that you're playing the game, any chance you could post a screenshot of the controls screen?

Man, I should ask GMG for some kickbacks.

Really looking forward to this though, looks like a nice spin on the Isaac formula.

Please someone tell me that online coop is in or in the plans???

Local coop is nice but i would not have the same ammount of game time possible with online. I admit though, this is a really neat game to play locally with beer (and whatever floats your boats..), much like NES Contra with my friends when i was a lot younger.

Why not an Isaac and/or Nuclear Throne reference?

So far you at least unlock extra features like a store to unlock more guns/items, a level skip and stuff like that. I think you also unlock some items through progress.
I wanted something that alluded to the fantasy-but-with-guns aesthetic and setting. And everyone knows what Praise The Sun is referring to. Isaac and Throne are a bit more esoteric and don't really have a quote/meme as recognizable as Dark Souls' "praise the sun"

And "Praise the gun" is something that NPCs and cults actually do in the game, so it's doubly effective

I'm not unfortunately. There's a GAFfer from the Indie Games thread who is

I could probably find a screen online though

It's cool, I just hope people don't go in expecting a Dark Souls experience.

Been watching CobaltStreak's marathon stream for this game. Looks to be something special.
Damned punishing difficulty, too. Can't wait to sink my teeth into it.

If you have the game pre-ordered, does the game become available to download at 12AM or do I have to wait for it to become available to everyone first?

So is this anything like Nuclear Throne?

It's a mixture of Nuclear Throne + Binding of Isaac, there's a lot of gameplay videos up on youtube.

It seems to share a lot of similarities with NT, however the developers have stated that:
- There is a sense of progression in the dungeon as you unlock new rooms/bosses. A bit like in Rogue Legacy but more subtle.
- A typical game is a lot longer than in NT.
- Obviously it takes place in a dungeon with rooms and doors.

It feels a bit slower but I don't mean that as a bad thing. I feel like some of my skills from NT have transferred over to this which is very useful as it can get quite hectic.
The big difference is that Enter the Gungeon is room-based while NT is map-based, in Gungeon you fight a room of enemies at a time while in NT the whole map will rush you pretty often.

Doesn't Steam give a to-the-minute countdown to release?

Yepp they do. I was hoping they would re-consider a midnight release though like Hyper Light Drifter a few days back, but if I remember, that countdown was to midnight, so you're right.

edit: Is there a gun count?

What?! No online co-op? Do we have a reason why?

They said they would love to but it's not currently planned. Maybe worried about latency considering how bullet hell it gets who knows. They're only a small team so probably weren't able to do it.

This is from a developer post in Oct 2015 http://steamcommunity.com/app/311690/discussions/0/490123832541890931/#c490123832544361115

I am sorry that we've given you trouble when looking for an answer on this, so I would like to give you the most complete answer I can.

Online co-op is not currently planned. The reason for this is comes down to complexity and time. Online multiplayer introduces a huge amount of complexity into the way any game needs to be structured (code-wise). Gungeon was started as a single player only game, and it was only by limiting the co-op to local that we were able to work that feature into our development timeline without huge re-writes, and delays. Believe me, we looked into online extensively, and asked around. We determined that a conservative estimate would have our gameplay engineer working for around half a year to get it up to snuff, and that would be at the cost of several bosses and enemies (the bread and butter of the game). In addition, our team is very small and we do not have an experienced network engineer here, so it would be very difficult to estimate how much time it will take or even guarantee the quality and performance of the net-code. This is compounded by the fact that our game is extremely fast paced and unforgiving at times, and if a player gets killed because of latency- that would make me very very sad. I can’t think of another bullethell game that moves as fast as ours with online co-op. (I'm sure there are and I just don't know about them, regardless it is something that makes online particularly hard for our game).

Tim Ambroji, one of the devs on Jamestown, another really great bullethell/shmup game with local only co-op echos the sentiment here. [blog.us.playstation.com]

Originally posted by Tim Ambroji:
We’ve tried to make it happen a few times now, but you wouldn’t believe how hard it is to port a local-only game to online multiplayer when it wasn’t designed that way in the first place! Not to mention, Jamestown is a twitchy, low-latency game where a single frame of error often means the difference between life and death.”

Rami Ismail, part of Vlambeer commented on adding online co-op to Nuclear Throne here.

Six months would actually be a lowball for getting it right.

We can add broken online in two months of work, but it'd be unbalanced, frustrating and laggy. Basically any complaint you see about online games.

I think to get it right, we'd have to restructure the game from scratch, and make every enemy shoot half the amount of projectiles. It'd just be a different game. As of now, there's a *lot* going on at all time.

Someone else in another thread on these forums suggested the notion that any game backed by Devolver Digital has no excuse for not putting online multiplayer in. To that person, I say this: Please understand that while Devolver is an amazing publisher that we love very much, part of the reason they are so great is that they let us do our thing. They are not game developers, there is no one at Devolver who is going to swoop in and solve a several month network engineering problem.

We understand that lots of players would like to be able to play the game with their friends who aren't in the same room as them, and sincerely wish that it was easier for us to put in the game and guarantee its quality.

With all of that said, Nvidia has announced something called “GameStream Co-op” which, in theory, allows a second player to take control of the Player-2 slot, with the video being streamed to them. It is currently in beta, and we have not been able to test it yet. Similarly, the same type of sharing can be done on the PS4 with SharePlay. Hopefully these services will work for some people, though I am not confident in them enough to call them a real solution to online multiplayer, at least for our game.

I hope that answers your question, and thank you very much for your interest in the game.

Cheers

The issue is REBUILDING the game. The game balance works for local on online coop just fine. Converting a game that is not written from the ground up to work online is an absolute nightmare, even to people who are experts at it, which we are not. We have always been extremely honest about scope- but just to reiterate what we have said on these forums many times: "Our team is too small and we lack the netcode experience to make Gungeon feel good and lag free with online co-op. A conservative estimate would mean delaying the game for at least 6 months but probably more."

Just pre-ordered on PSN, the gameplay videos sold the game for me, it looks tons of fun! Can´t wait to play it on 5th.

If you´re on PS4 you can probably play online coop with share play.

Played some of this last night. Great stuff. That dodge roll is revolutionary, imo. I hate the genre, but I love this game. Bosses are crazy hard so far, but maybe it's 'cause I'm bad at the genre. Would it be a spoiler to post one of the cool boss intro images?

is there any meta upgrade system going on in the game, like say a rogue legacy or crypt of the necrodancer?

It's funny how this trailer has a better announcer than Doom Beta...

Instant buy for me after that trailer!

Looks pretty fun. But for the first time in recent memory I had one thought when watching the trailer, and it distracted from the game for me. I want more games with beautiful detailed sprites instead of more pixel art. I think I'm at the "Oh, another one" stage.

The cool thing about this is that stages and gameplay are loaded with little details. Book pages flittering from shot shelves, plates and cups crashing to the ground when you flip tables over, unique reload animations for every gun, etc.

It may be pixel art but it's detailed pixel art with a lot of environmental reactions

And cool flourishes like the design of the lore encyclopedia
