GTA Online has generated over half a billion dollars in revenue

I didn't like gta online. I felt getting into do anything was so cumbersome

It is, if you had any interest in races or the other matchmaking-based activities these things have never been made easier to do or quicker to do. The main draw of the online is and always has been, for most people, fucking around in the instanced sandboxes with a group of friends. Maybe doing a little heist stuff here and there but beyond that it's been primarily the thing you just fuck around in.

People would do less of that if the matchmaking-based activities had been fixed and the Online would be much less of a time sink with less loading screens, connection screens, etc etc. All of the downtime just added onto the grind that was already there.

Hopefully they design a better Online MP component in terms of how you can get together with other people in the activities in the next game or whatever. The set up here, they have to know is awful.

Wow. Amzing. I just thought people were buying GTA5 still, every month, because they didn't get a chance to play the single player.

Didnt know the online community was this deep!

And to think all it cost them was a good online mode.

How about they use a tiny bit of that to give me some FREAKING SINGLE PLAYER EXPANSIONS OF SOME KIND!!@#$!@

If not, at least put a big chunk of it into developing Red Dead Re(whatver).

Not surprised, but I am impressed.

I wonder how much money it would take to not have to wait a lifetime in a lobby between missions?

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a GTA Online stand alone release if sales of GTA V ever slow. Something free to play, if you will.

I have easily spent more time with GTA Online this generation than any other game. It's become my go-to hangout when I have downtime in my personal life. There isn't really any order to it, just log in and chill with whoever is playing on my friends list. Once you know how to cheese missions and heists, it isn't difficult to recoup losses from your playground adventures in free roam.

This is absolutely going to be a huge part of GTA VI. I hope people are mentally prepared.

I think everyone expects that. With that said, I don't think it's anything that'll impact the single player mode in terms of quality or features. So, I won't be bothered by whatever they decide to do.

The first weeks were hilariously fucked. They basically nerfed everything that could give you any notable amount of money into oblivion, day after day. That was clearly more important than actually fixing the massive server issues.

Lol at the idea of single player expansions. Thst dream is dead.

GTA 6 Bout to go crazy with online components. Wouldn't be surprised if gta online becomes a standalone purchase

It was fun for a little while, but the systems pushing these monetary gains put a damper on doing the stuff you actually want to do. Plus the over-long leveling grind, endless loading screens and gameplay mechanics that flail about limply in competive or otherwise real-time environments.

But congrats I guess. The age of youtube is the age of GTA.

There were a shitload of money glitches and when you didn't go crazy R* didn't care.
It's also the best online arcade racer this gen.

I was happy to spend $40 on shark cards w birthday psn cards. why not. i play the game enough, and some of the cars / vehicles they've released are awesome. they did dlc right

This is scary as I hope they dont incorporate this into their next games single player. The multiplayer already sucks because of the grind. Id love to get a lowrider ( especially for sp ) but wont put in the effort because of the grind.

When I think of a grind in games, I think of doing the same task over and over. Maybe the first couple months it was out, but now there is so much to do in GTA Online that it never feels grindy to me.

GTA Online is great (with friends) lol.

EDIT: Also as a player who has never bought a shark card. But hey....thank you for the free updates to the kids that swipe their parents credit cards. haha.

Good news for them, bad for the people that hate the online. It could have been so much more instead of a money grab or grind-a-thon.

People say it won't, but I still think this is going to influence the direction of GTA6.
As long as they fix the garbage load times in online in for it. Not like the story mode of 5 was that great. I love GTAVs online but the load times for game modes and stuff keep me from starting it up with friends.

These types of numbers are going to completely affect the direction of gaming in the coming years. Games will be designed from Day1 to capitalize on DLC, season passes, and in-game currency. It will 100% steer the direction of games in the future.

You mean AAA games.

Here's hoping GTA Online in GTA 6 is actually easy to play with friends.

Getting into a private lobby and doing consecutive activities with friends in GTA online is a fucking trainwreck.

You did not miss a lot, I spent around 10 hours in that mode and it was incredibly boring. Felt about as tacked on as Assassin's Creed multiplayer.

Nah man. Heists and the collection of Lamar missions in the first Lowriders DLC are standouts. Also some amazing user created content is in there.

I can't imagine people are still playing AC Multiplayer modes to this day. Tacked on??? definitely not.

Tip to playing with friends: Press start and in the Online tab go down to "automatchmaking" and turn it off. This will make it so when you or your friends launch a mission you will always have host and not be put in the mission with randoms.

To be honest it's the lobby system with strangers that is the bigger problem. If someone leaves or is disconnected for even a moment, every player is booted from the heist, but worse, not put back in the lobby, so you have to fuck around setting it up again and find a new team instead of just one new player.

I understand there are things that simply cannot be completed without 4 players, but at least put people back in the lobby, or freeze the game for up to 30 seconds to allow a player to reconnect. The system they use is garbage tier, and they can do much better that that.

Yeah I'm really curious to see how they implement online and micro transactions in the next Red Dead. One of my personal theories on why we haven't seen that game is they retooled it a bit after seeing how massively successful GTA Online is

This is actually one of the things I emailed Rockstar about a month back. That and the idea of having player lives in a mission leading to a fail state. There shouldn't be lives and they should just make the payouts subtract with an increased to the number of deaths.

I actually heard back from them and they said that they were sending it to the Online team. Who the hell knows...but here's hoping they make some changes in that area.

This should come as a surprise to no one. GTA V is well on its way to being the most profitable game in history. Also, keep in mind that MS and Sony have had tons of sales on the deluxe editions which come with either the Great White Shark Cash Card Bundle or the Whale Shark Cash Card Bundle. So I am sure that has been helping.

$$$$$$$$$

never spent a dime on it but I know a guy that spent $100 for some GTA cash, he just wanted that apartment

I remember doing that mission where you go down the hill and steal the helicopter to steal a cargo thing and get paid like 30K for 30-1 minute of gameplay lol
was fun to do over and over

Yeah, their entire approach to how the mission and heists work is like the antithesis to what make a GTA game enjoyable. It's too restrictive, there's no freedom, and fail states are part of that. Also, having a rigid system where you have to have 4 people always, even if the mission is clearly doable without all 4, and then someone leaves and everyone is booted out is just awful.

They should just integrate the campaign and story into online.

Let us earn money and gadgets by playing with our created character online by doing story missions.

It was ridiculous going from being a badass rich mofo in single player to a complete level 1 scrub online.

Let my character play through the story. I could have accompanied Franklin, Trevor, and Michael into the story.

I don't even touch single player anymore because it doesn't do a thing to help my online character which I'm grinding like hell to level up. If I could have taken the 30 hours of SP towards my online character, that would have been so much better.

What platform are people dropping money on this thing? I can't imagine the hack laden PC version needs micro transactions to support the shenanigans I have seen on youtube.

This makes me sad because I think it pretty much spells the end of any kind of single player push from Rockstar in terms of DLC and possibly maybe even the next GTA will have a more limited single player experience.

I have no problem with online components, I actually enjoyed GTA online but normally it spells the end for single player once multiplayer becomes this successful at a company, I really hope that isn't the case here.

They might become the new Valve with these kinda of results.

It would be awesome to know how much the game has made since it just keeps on trucking. Still amazing the online portion of this game has made so much money.
