PSN 2-step verification? PS3 system software update 4.80

Finally. The amount of times I've seen people make a thread saying their PSN account got stolen is ridiculous. Not the people making the thread, but how often this problem occurs.

I was wondering what that was when I updated yesterday. Good to see it finally implemented with all the stories that have been posted about someone logging in to spiderman's accounts as of late. I wonder why it wasn't in the patch notes or in a blog post because this is something we've been pining for since the breach a couple years back.

Edit: Where's the other "half" of this feature, how are we going to enable and manage it.

I'm going to guess that it's still in internal testing and they're using PS3 as the test bed. Still, better late than never.

Also, I do find it funny that on the day the 360 was formally discontinued, there's a new feature for the PS3.

Looks like they jumped the gun releasing the update? Maintenance that was suppose to take place earlier this week has been rescheduled:

@AskPlayStation: Update: Routine PSN Maintenance has been rescheduled to Wednesday, 4/20 from 10:30pm - 12:30am PDT. For info, see: https://status.playstation.com

Routine maintenance and improvements for PlayStation™Network will be performed for approximately 2 hours on 04/21/2016, 1:30 AM to 04/21/2016, 3:30 AM (Your Local Timezone).

Crossing my fingers that it goes live for real tomorrow, on both PS3 and PS4.

What exactly is two-step authentification? How does it work?

Here you go https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-factor_authentication :)

Two-factor authentication (also known as 2FA or 2-Step Verification) is a technology patented in 1984[1] that provides identification of users by means of the combination of two different components. These components may be something that the user knows, something that the user possesses or something that is inseparable from the user. A good example from everyday life is the withdrawing of money from a cash machine. Only the correct combination of a bank card (something that the user possesses) and a PIN (personal identification number, something that the user knows) allows the transaction to be carried out. 2FA is ineffective against modern threats,[2] like ATM skimming, phishing, and malware etc. Two-factor authentication is a type of multi-factor authentication.

It's of course optional for the user to enable, but when enabled you can't do any account critical changes or pay anything on the account without entering a code sent to your phone via an sms.

When you log in for the first time on a new computer, you need to enter a verification code from your email or your phone.

If you have a Google or Microsoft account, you should go turn that on right now. It's great for security. Steam too, but I think Valve forced it on for everyone at one point.

How does that SMS thing work, how much do these companies have to pay for sending billions of them out?

Edit: Colony Wars next, please?

you haven't been using 2step ever?

I don't have a cell phone plan.

Everytime I have used it for something it sends a text message to your mobile phone with a code. Then you input that code on the website or app to verify the account.

I see. I have a gmail account. How would the two-step authentification work if I don't have a cell phone?

It's utterly ridiculous that it has taken Sony so long to implement it. Better late than never though I suppose.

10 years late, but neat.

If they could make the PS3s store not shite now, that would be great, but I'm guessing they'll see that as too much effort for a near EoL console.

Im sorry but the PSN store performance on PS3 is a non issue when YOU SHOULD USE THE PC STORE! I see this shit in every PS3 thread. Havent needed to open the Ps3 store in years.

FUCK YES, finally!

2step can be a text message, an app or a code sent to an external email.
Steam guard for example sends a code to a verified email adress.
Or maybe they will sell a hardtoken device, like banks and blizzard used to have

How about a tablet, then? The code doesn't have to be sent as a text message. That's just one option. You could also use one of several apps to generate the code, like Google's official Authenticator app. This kind of apps require neither cell phone plan nor internet connection.

oh, NOW they add it in? Couldn't do that before someone got into my account and got it banned...

Even a cellphone without a sim card. I grabbed an amazon fire phone on clearance for basically nothing that just sits in my car and acts as a podcast/music player for my stereo. People could easily throw authentication apps on something like that.

Either way, I'm really glad sony got with the times. This should have happened years ago.

If you got a smartphone without a Sim card and phone plan you could download the Gmail Authenticator App instead. You don't need a Phone Contract. A cheap smartphone iw all you need and an Internet connection. When logging in on a new device you would input the code from the App to be able to get in. Then you could choose to not require the code again for that particular phone/PC/laptop/whatever.

Personally I use texts the phone app is limited to that particular phone so if you lose it it's a bit awkward. You can receive a text elsewhere if need be. You also get like 10 codes you can make a note of in case of emergencies.

It might sound awkward but in fact it's very easy and quick to use. Makes you feel so much more at ease in terms of security and it's something I highly recommend and wanted on PSN for a long time

Couldn't you also install Android-x86 on a virtual machine, then install the Authenticator on that? Zero cost to you and 20 minute inital setup.

I wonder how many accounts are secretly shared/stolen. Imagine the shock of everyone who sees their account has been accessed somewhere else lol.

Hey wait, what if account stealers get to the account first and enable two-step verification on their side? What then?

I wonder if the move to have playstation run by the US arm is accelerating all of this, finally seeing long wanted features being implemented.
