Gears of War 4 Beta |OT| Hello Chainsaw My Old Friend, I've Come To Rev You Up Again

Played about 5 TDM games last night.. maybe I've just been away from gears for a while but man it wasn't very fun. It was basically just everyone dodge rolling until they got up close for shotgun blasts. the aiming felt a bit clunky when people got close. i kinda wish the camera shake when sprinting would just be taken out, it adds nothing and detracts from my view of the map

also the game looks pretty meh, and the swarm models look really bad imo :(
 
Vaulting over cover is such a satisfying maneuver to do for me. It seems like a small touch, but the animation and constant momentum just feel right.

It makes me wish the actual maps in the beta took more advantage of it. There are quite a few cover types that look like something I should be able to vault over, and it's mildly annoying when I can't do that because it creates a sort of disconnect in the heat of a match. I could maybe look past that if the three maps struck a chord with me in other ways, but the busyness of the amount of obstacles negatively reminds me of Halo 5's maps. The maps in Gears: UE seem practically minimalist in comparison and create their own identity in a way that I'm not quite getting with the maps in this yet.

As for the game, the torque bow sound needs to be fixed. I can barely hear it being charged/shot. It's so faint and easily missed. Needs to go back to the old sound please.

Smoke from attached grenades needs to be more visible. Gears 3 you could clearly tell where a grenade was planted if you looked for the smoke, it's a lot harder to notice in this.

Respawns definitely need to be tweaked, especially in Dodgeball.

Maps seem to be easy spawn traps and in general just flat and plain looking. Very narrow spots making for good shotgun battles but thats it. It needs a better mix. I hope all the maps aren't gonna be this flat. Maps need tiers. Not crazy size just enough not to be just a flat map with boxes thrown about. Look at all the gears 3 maps, different tiers, elevations. Currently 2 out of the 3 maps are basically just flat.

Sound. The sound needs to be fixed in general. I've said it before and i'll repeat it again. the sound is crap. Please please please look at the sound in gears 3. Everything was different and easily distinguishable in the heat of the battle. In this battles far away sound like they're next to you and vice versa. Enemy footsteps need to be louder, I really cannot hear them coming behind me or around the corner a lot of times. This was a huge problem for me in UE and one of the main reasons I didn't play it a lot.

Hammerburst is useless right now. Lancer outguns it at long range, shotty beats it in mid range. Shit I'd rather shoot the pistol instead of using the hammerburst. Either remove the reticle bloom on it or nerf the range on the shotty. I preferred the single shot hammerburst personally but I can see why it was made 3 burst because of modded controllers. Although pistols could be now the go to for those assholes.

Everything else in general is pretty good. I'm definitely excited for the full game I just hopes the maps and sounds get fixed.

If anyone has an extra code and doesn't mind sharing, please let me know. My friend is in the Navy and wants to play this. He's a major fan. He did play the Ultimate edition but somehow didn't receive a code, I assured him maybe it was given out in waves but seeing how it's this late I'm thinking he's not going to get one, unless it was given out for preordering?
 
I just don't get their rationale behind this. Or maybe I do and just don't agree with it.

For starters it's dumb to reload an already loaded gun. I know it's video games but that's just goofy. And my biggest problem is that the trade off for popping off shots and to get active was that you're losing valuable ammo. With the way it is now aren't you still keeping that ammo AND getting the power boost from the active? That's lame.

If it automatically removes the shots from your gun every time you active reload then never mind on the second part. I just must not have noticed the missing ammo.

You are right, you don't lose any ammo. They realize that active power boost is an issue and they are trying to make something different with it. Just remove it and keep it for the campaign only. Would anyone seriously be sad if the power boost went away from multiplayer? It's not like the weapons are peashooters without it and it doesn't require any extra skill or anything like that. It's just something that simply does not work in multiplayer.

I'd love to know why they made the Hammerburst as lame as it is and thought it was good enough for the beta. It sucks at long range, without the stopping power it sucks at short range, and it's ROF sucks. Literally no redeeming qualities other than having a brutal execution.

If they changed it just because of the rare modded controllers then that's a shame. The single shot was a great alternative to the Lancer. Both kind of had their place depending on the situation. I don't mind that it moved back to a burst but jesus is it weak. The range and TTK definitely need to get a bit of a boost.

I agree 100%. I loved the single shot and could keep up with the odd modded controllers pretty easily. Very satisfying to beat them at their own game without help. It really is a pointless gun in the game right now. No one I know used it in UE and I have yet to see someone use it in the beta.

Finally got some time on the beta today, i'm a fan of gears 3 so am happy with the way the game feels.

Certainly knowing that its an alpha\beta means I understood why the graphics looked rough, I'm playing on a 10ft screen, using a Sony projector running in game mode and it didn't look like a crisp 1080p image at all. It could be the aliasing as the everything except the players and score looked blury, this is in contrast to Halo 5 which looks damn sharp.

The maps though, wow I really hope they are placeholder whilst they get them together as they seriously lack the feeling of some of the original gears maps. The biggest problem is scope, you can see across them whereas every gears 3 map was distinct in the way it looked and played. The water in harbour looked good, but the map itself was just way too open.

Gears 4 has gone from a must buy purchase (I typically switch between playing gears and halo when they are released) to a wait and see. I want to see what the final map selection is like before deciding on buying it.

Edit: The other thing missing from the maps that I really wanted to see used more due to the added horsepower was map deformation. The Gears 2 map avalanche was an amazing example of how something could change the map half way and I was hoping that would be explored more.
 
It's like the voices sound like they are right by you when the character is across the entire map

*Hears enemy grunt failing to reload from his spawn area on the other side of the map*

*get's gnashered from behind by enemy that you never heard coming*

Graphically I have to eat a bit of crow. Maybe a talon, or a beak? Despite being unimpressed with the graphics I saw in footage, I'm actually impressed having played it. Once the lighting is sorted, and textures and glitchy animations are fixed, it'll be pretty damned gorgeous.
 
im having fun but maybe its because i havent played gears MP in years

i have a few concerns but im hoping they will be fixed or tweaked in the final release.

im gonna try to get to 20 for the reward then wait for the game to come out so im not burnt out.
