Microsoft Ending Xbox 360 Production

The 360 was a really great console.

Even if I spent most of the final part of last gen with Playstation, Xbox 360 really sums up a lot of that period for me.

This was the console that caused the huge change in my life. Although I don't want to admit it, it is my favourite console of all time (sorry all Sega consoles). That God-like system update that allowed it to support non Microsoft Xbox external HDs upto 2TB and then weekly deals with gold selling full priced titles for an insane low price is an awesome combo (I'm upto 200 installed games).

My favourite SE console is the Star Wars one (it makes R2D2 sounds!) and it's also the one that's lasted after my 3 previous RROD failures. I'd also like to that Andre/Scott at Microsoft for sending me FOC replacements for those even though I was way out of a location that offered support.

XBLA was stunning but stifled by the 2 game a week only policy and game size cap in the early days. But still, perfect versions of street fighter 3' Daytona, Radiant Silvergun, loads of Capcom fighters, 2D shumps. Once Games on Demand costs became reasonable that's a good service too.

F.

As a Sega fan, the nuttiest thing to me was the presence of Virtual On of all franchises.

The Xbox 360 got:

Virtual On Oratorio Tangram 5.66, a revision of the game that added a few characters and never had a home release.
Virtual On Force, a game that was never ported home at all since its release in 2001.
Virtual On, which had previously only had a worthwhile port on PS2.

...all in HD, with online play, LAN play, arcade-perfect mechanics, and a twin stick controller that seems hands-down better than the Dreamcast and Saturn sticks.

Who in the hell could have predicted that?

Been gaming since the early 80s, and have owned lots of platforms. Nothing comes close to just how good the 360 was for me, and just how much enjoyment I got out of it.

Fuck sake Microsoft, bury the xbone and release a real successor to the 360. The xbone is an insult to its legacy... The xbone is my only console this gen.

The XBox One is no insult to the 360. It was the continuation of the multimedia device that the XBox 360 had evolved to be over 7 years or so. Taken too far, and stepping to far away from building leading power into it like the OG Xbox had, sure. But there's been some damn fine gaming to be had on the Xbox One which is really the legacy.

Amazing.

Had three different 360s (Pro, Elite, and 360 S), got so much mileage out of them from 2006 to 2014, when I got the Xbone.

And the controller, best controller of last gen hands-down. And all the wicked variations it had (I distinctly remember owning that black/white Dragon design one that was a Walmart exclusive).

Done to death by now but *Big Boss Salute*

Definitely my preferred console of last gen, so many great memories of my introduction into hd gaming... and achievements. Not much of an achievement hunter nowadays.

Will go down in history as only one notch below Ps2. Fantastic machine, RROD aside. Not to mention its success made late-gen Ps3 as awesome as it was, second place Sony is truly best Sony lol.

Now Sony is back in first place, PS Plus sucks, and we get a dumb console refresh no one asked for.

But I digress, RIP 360, what a great console.

EDIT: Oh and also the first time I saw HD gaming. Call of Duty 2 blew my fucking mind when I saw it on an HDTV. This was in 2005 or 2006, when I still was playing Ps2 on a CRT. Insane. I'm sad I'll never have that moment again as jumps are much smaller now. Maybe VR?

Ive already had some good times on the bone, but it ain't imo what the third Xbox should have been. The OG and 360 were my favorite consoles. The xbone I bought because I can't live without Halo.

Damn, I need to buy one to support my collection of imported Cave shmups. Not to mention classics that may never become BC on XBO, like Lost Odyssey.

Lost Odyssey is coming to BC. They were trying to figure out a solution to the multiple disc games and we're gonna get Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey on there.

That's ace.

Amazing looking at that and thinking it was on the same console as Halo 4 eh? Same hardware, nearly generational leap in what they could do with it.

That kind of thing...Well, not to bring it up in every thread, but squeezing all the juice out of consoles may fall by the wayside with certain developments.

Perfection.

Thank you guys I'm glad you like it

Think I'm gonna cry, this is legit so sad right now. Goodbye my most favorite console.

An 80 million deep install base isn't getting blown up tomorrow guys!

When XBL no longer supports the 360, that'll be a bigger deal than the production shutdown. But it may not be for a while.

What an amazing console. The 360 really was a game changer with its online functionality and downloadable games in 2005. The launch lineup was amazing, and it had one of the best first years of any console ever IMO. I really need to get a slim at some point just to ensure I have a lasting system.

My favorite console. Amazing games, Xbox Live, achievements, controller, party chat, fun and colorful dashboard...etc. A lot of time spent in Call of Duty, Halo, Gears, GTA, so many good online experiences.

I really hope the slim and next console's design follow the Xbox 360's Slim design, which I think is the best console design ever, and by a wide margin.

The Xbox 360 easily became my most played console of all time thanks to its unusually long lifespan, its huge library of games, and great online.

*salute*

It's a very good looking console, I didn't like the matte version quite as much though.

The Mega Drive, Dreamcast and PS1 are three of my favourite consoles of all time. The fact that I can play anything from... Streets of Rage(1-3), Revenge of Shinobi, Sonic 3 & Knuckles (with the lock on functionality) to Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue 2, Daytona USA, Castlevania SOTN etc all on one system, if someone was to say the 360 was the finest console ever made I wouldn't dispute it.

It has it's own noteworthy games too of course (Lost Odyssey)... plus games like Ridge Racer, Tekken, DMC and Final Fantasy jumped in. The console really does have it all.

First half of its life was pretty amazing and it was my most used console. After that though when the focus shifted more to the Kinect I only bought some better performing multiplats and otherwise used PS3 more. Still a great run and great console.

Software wise this console will be remembered as one of my all-time faves (also my fave controller ever) but hardware wise easily the worst. I went through 4 of these consoles (proof of how much I loved the thing), the initial purchase, 2 replacements under warranty and a 4th outright purchase outside of warranty and because I wanted the built in wifi and hdmi slot of the upgraded models (still never owned the slim though as I liked the removable hdd). Just out of curiosity what batch of these consoles was the last one to have the RROD problem? Did they manage to stop it happening or is the problem still occurring?

SO many good memories! Put MAD hours into the console. Battlefield 2, Battlefield Bad Company 1/2, Call of Duty 4, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey.

I remember giving up my launch day pre-order to a friend of mine. I remember jumping around that giant city in crackdown looking for those god damn green orbs. I remember getting pissed off at gamestop for missing the pre-order date for Gears of War. I remember walmart saving the day on that one.

It was a great system. Not as ambitious as the PS3 (my primary system last generation), but it was great for what it was designed for - games.

The legacy of the 360 lives on today in the Xbox One and the PS4. Both systems have taken elements from the 360.

I am looking forward to this E3. I want to see if Microsoft is able to bring back the spirit of the 360. In terms of use, looks and games.

Bought one in early '08 that ended up rroding. Got an E model last year in lieu of dealing with xbo bc. Sadly, I never really got into xbl at all during Halo 3's heyday. That must have been a magical time. But there are still games like Fable 2 and Gears 3 that'll ensure a place for this thing in my collection. RIP lil sexbox.

Halo 3 Multiplayer in it's prime was so awesome!

I don't feel anything that 360 production will end. I have no nostalgia or emotions. I ignored the console its entire life. I was a fanboy that whole generation lol

E3 2006 showed me which console would be my main. On-line right out of the box? Varied portfolio? Momentum was with it, so support was ensured. Finally got around to getting one in 08 for Street Fighter 4 and Tales of Vesperia.

Got about 3 good years of good work out of it (won the Driver Lottery) before I switched to the recently bought PS3 for Dark Souls 1. Catherine would be my last 360 game.

The blades were the best.

Yup. Went downhill after that. Remember that HOT Zune synergy? Pffffffffffffffffffffffffttt

I was lucky enough to visit one of the factories that made Xbox 360 consoles. I remember looking at the injection machine and thinking each cycle, "That's someones new console and they are going to love it, and again, and again..."

This was around 2008 when they were ramping up production for the holidays and launch of NXE, there were competed consoles stacked everywhere they could, once they warehouse was full they started to fill up the corridors of the factory floor for extra storage

I also got to talk candidly to some of the engineers about the RROD situation and it's cause.

They had a display case in the office area with various memorabilia like group photos to commemorate the first shipment of Xbox 360 consoles as well as items from the OG xbox launch.

360 was my favorite console ever until the PS4 usurped it sometime last year.

I'll keep using mine until the Xbox One backward compatibility covers all the 360 games in my collection.

Jumped in with the Jasper arcade and got a 120gb HD and wireless upgrade for it. Then I got a slim. And recently, for halo and forza I got an E. Have 50 or so solid titles on it and it is my main squeeze for Mass Effect, Gears and Halo to this day. Even played Dark Souls 2 over a hundred hours on it at launch.

Hell it still gets more time still as a USFIV and ME box than my xbone does for its software.

Such an amazing platform. No regrets. Forza 3 is a shining star on the console too.

Yeah, I didn't get a lot of 1000/1000 games (fuck DLC's :p) but it was like snorting coke, I swear. Got a full achievement rack on COD4, Bioshock, Bioshock 2 (enduring dat shitty MP just for the damn achievements), Fallout 3, Dead Space and Oblivion.

I got in a bit of a trophy hunter mood in the PS3/4, but luckily not as bad as those days in which I played that awful Doritos game with a dinosaur just for the damn 200G, haha.

This one kid that I really hated won a 360 from a Pepsi bottlecap and I never forgave him for it. It ended up getting the RROD really early on though. Sucker

IIRC the Jasper revision of the original design (pre-slim) was the one that solved RROD. I remember buying mine in early 2009 and checking serial numbers or something to make sure it was a Jasper.

I sold mine about 4 years ago. Occasionally I've missed it, but really just to play original Xbox games. The hardware was not a good value and the first party offerings were so poor most of the time. But I congratulate them for being so successful for 10 years, although they forced Sony to start charging for online multiplayer this gen,

I might buy a new model now before they're gone because now they actually come with decent features (wifi, respectable hard drive size, HDMI, reliable hardware), just to have something to play Fuzion Frenzy and JSRF.

Oh and to finally try Tales of Vesperia.
