No. Ryusei is one of the worst dramas I ever watched. Fuckin hate it. Figured I wouldn't mention it because he had only watched one ep but if you guys keep bringin it up I have no choice but to drop the real talk.
This is about the time Erika fatigue had set in. Fuckin liar game.

That makes me feel a bit better. I couldn't get into Liar Game either. Those cheesier/more stylized dramas don't usually resonate with me as much as the slice-of-life and smaller unusual stories do.

Which dramas are your faves, IAE?

We talked about this in the Jgo thread but the 2005 season is the greatest of all time. If I had to pick one personal fave, it's Sapuri. Just reminds me of being young in corporate Japan.

I've only watched two episodes but I could understand why someone wouldn't like Ryusei. I'll see where it goes from here. Also I'm not a seasoned JDrama watcher so I definitely view things differently.

Also one of my other friends told me to watch Zenkai Girl too, that's next on my list.

I don't know what JGO or Sapuri are. I'll Google them, thanks. You live in japan? ☺

Is there a separate & active thread for k-dramas? All the threads I've found have been pretty dead, which was a bit surprising considering how active the K-pop OT is.

Haven't really seen one. This one was kinda dead until I bumped it a few weeks ago honestly. Hope to keep it active though!

I'd just like to point out j-whatever is not my 'term' or abbreviation, it's a common way most of us expats refer to stuff where we clearly have to differentiate. For example a lot of us have two cells, houses, cars, partners (cough) so we need to specify my Jtai or my Jpad or my Jpiece. Obviously this is just a play on the same thing as Jpop or Jdrama. Jgo's roots are probably just someone thinking it was a fun take on eigo<>jgo. Shrug.

Haven't seen j drama in a very long time. Mostly old ones I remember liking a lot was GTO, My boss my hero, and densha otoko. My boss my hero was pretty much live action anime. Damn that was funny. I wonder if any holds up.

Just watched episode 9 of Okitegami, what a cliffhanger. Can't wait for the last episode.

Jun Kaname's character...I understand his motivations I guess, but so annoying!

Did anyone catch the last episode of Okitegami?

I thought the ending was pretty well done,
that last scene with them holding hands was so pretty
. I really loved the series overall too.

The only thing is
why did they never explain how she lost her memory in the first place? I thought they would with her having that constant flashback and stuff.

I liked Roosevelt Game, Last Cinderella, Marumo's Story and Galileo a lot.

Right now I'm watching Amachan (fantastic show) and season 3 of Doctor-X, and in January they will air a show starring Anne Watanabe (Ken Watanabe's daughter) called Hanasaki Mai Speaks Out, and it looks good.

Finished Siren, overall it was a pretty entertaining suspense drama. The last episode was kinda... huh... over the top. It threw me off cause the previous episodes were more grounded in reality.

I started 5-ji kara 9-ji made yesterday. I'm digging it so far. Yamapi isn't bad at all in this, which is suprising. Guess playing a stoic yet weird character is what he should do all the time given his constant poker face.
Oh and Ishihara Satomi is still the most beautiful actress I've ever seen.

Just randomly decided to watch the first episode of Suzuki-sensei, since it's on Netflix. I wasn't expecting something so dark.

Guessing that's not you, because that'd be an odd thing to admit randomly.
J-partner, huh? J-girl/j-boy have a better ring.

Agree with everything you said about 5-9, but you'll end up wanter her to go wit the other guy! First saw Satomi in Shitsuren Chocolatier with MatsuJun then basically fell in love lol.

Been with Satomi for what feels like a decade now but she really only came into herself recently, really with Rich/Poor.

Most of Japan agrees she's at her peak:

I didn't mean we attach j to those words, just those concepts. I'll avoid posting some examples due to their 'appropriateness.' A simple one for our cellies was j-tai/ei-tai.

She was great in Rich Man Poor Woman yeah, but so far I might prefer her role in 5-9. She has a cool vibe going on and I like the way she tells people to knock it off haha
She's more than a pretty face.

She always reminds me of Aya Ueto whenever I see her. She was great in Shitsuren Chocolatier and Rich Man/Poor Woman. I'm enjoying her in 5 to 9 as well even though that series isn't my favorite.

The novels aren't finished yet. It's likely that
he hasn't explained how she lost her memories in them yet so it wouldn't be possible for them to do it in the TV show.

Having said that I'm pretty sure at this point that (potential spoilers/speculation about her identity)
she's Hanekawa Tsubasa from the Monogatari series. The ages and physical appearances match. I was prepared to accept that she wasn't if she turned out to be the illegitimate child/heir of that rich guy, but after the twist that she wasn't I'm pretty sure she's Hanekawa. As for how she lost her memories, I'd assume it was a kaii (oddity) from the Monogatari series since some of them have been shown to mess with memories and such. That's completely speculation on my part but there have been a lot of hints dropped about it. It's definitely not proven by any novels so far that I know of (even though they're not translated so I can't read them).

I'm sad to see the show end because I really enjoyed it and the next chance for anything from that series translated into English is probably an anime in a year or two.

That's pretty interesting, I've only watch Bake and Niseimonogatari but definitely food for thought...

I'm also wondering, if they make an anime are they just going to recreate what happened in the drama? Or are they going to cover some stories we haven't seen yet.

It's just a theory but it seems like it is being heavily hinted at. Can't really get into the specifics of why without talking about stuff that is post nise though.

I have no idea how closely the drama followed the novels because they aren't translated/I can't read them. I'd assume that we'd get something similar but with Shaft's (the animation studio behind the Monogatari series) art direction. Hopefully there will be an additional novel or two in the series out by then so we can see some new material animated by a second season (assuming a first would cover what the TV show covered).

Yeah the last episode was great. I actually got tired the show around episode 5~7 but the last two episodes were enough to hook me in.

I still have to finish [mutsu mieru me]. The show was decent. I think it would have been better if there were more episodes and the story played out slowed with more character development.
I stopped watching Shitamachi Rocket. Samurai sensei was interesting for those interested in Japanese history. I only watched the first episode though.

This season didn't really have any stand out shows for me. A lot of decent shows but nothing that really stood out.

Just finished the last episode of mutsu mieru me and It was not bad! some great scenes with some some overacting. The concept was really interesting though

Welp, finished 5ji kara 9ji made. No big surprises, everything got resolved and I'm satisfied with the ending.
Overall it was pretty entertaining without being revolutionary. The humor was a strong point of the show imo. The supporting cast was top-notch, loved every character in this.
It was obvious that Kiyomiya would never become the love interest but damn was I rooting for him. Arthur was an hilarious character, his over-the-top nature (plus the natural overacting of J-drama) lead to some of the funniest moments in the show, especially with Momoe. I'd gladly take a spin-off about them :lol
So yeah, if you want a nice romcom look no further.

Does anyone remember a show called "Sakura"? It was a show about a Japanese-American woman going to Japan to teach English. I really liked it and would love to watch it again.

Episodes: 156 15-minute episodes

I began to re-watch At home Dad earlier today, still damn good! Got both Abe Hiroshi and Miyasako Hiroyuki. Probably in my top 5, maybe even 3.

Haha, I never watched all the episodes. It was on my local TV station here in the SF Bay area. it was just a really cool show and introduced me to a lot of the Japanese culture. Kinda set me on the path I am on now.

I recently watched the tenno no ryoriban, shitamachi rocket, Ichiban Densha ga Hashitta, and Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. The two shows i liked the most were the tenno no ryoriban and kekkon dekinai otoko, can anyone recommend me a good j drama with this same level of entertainment as those two? Thanks!

I posted about At Home Dad a couple of posts up, it's probably my favourite together with Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. Same actor (Abe Hiroshi) playing a square:ish character, although not as weird as in kekkon. Family and comedy genre I guess.

I enjoyed Tiger & Dragon too, not that similar but good comedy.

This season has started
I already watched a few but no stand outs so far.

I watched Tokyo Setinmental, The Specialist and Naomi and Kanako.

Naomi and Kanako was interesting in some regards, and average in other areas.

I'm definitely going to watch the second episode.
First I want to go through a few other first episodes.

Anyone ever watch Neko Zamurai? I want to know if the kitty makes it out okay in s2. Haven't seen the show at all but really want to watch.

Is no one watching anything from this season?

naomi to kanako epiode 6 was great. Looking forward to the next episode.

otousan to yobasete episode 4 was pretty good. The characters all have their unique distinctive traits that make them interesting

started watching 'Love That Makes You Cry' (Itsuka Kono Koi wo Omoidashite Kitto Naite Shimau), just finished the third episode.
Man, this is my kind of show. Really liking it so far (Kasumi Arimura is just amazing, top to bottom)

Anyone else have other good recent shows to recommend?

Otousan to Yobasete is definitely on my radar. Glad to hear it's fun, sounds like it and I wanna check it out. Naomi I haven't seen but...I really do not care for the main actress in that one. Tried several shows with her previously and just one of those actresses who rubs me the wrong way. I'd be glad to hear more about the show regardless, though.

Love That Makes you Cry is on my list for sure. Just waiting till I feel like a bit of a heavier show, haha. I get the sense it's on the heavier side.

We watched I'm Home and Date last winter and enjoyed them both, particular I'm Home which was another knockout role for Kimutaku and had a stellar performance by Aya Ueto as well, who was so good in Attention Please. (I crack up just thinking of the awkward classroom hilarity in that show, like when they're practicing their English and say "Please enjoy the fright!" Bwahah.) Date was a lot of fun, too, and endearingly offbeat.

We caught Algernon, well, it was a bit heavy for my wife so I ended up watching it while exercising since she stopped watching after the first ep. It was an impressive adaptation and kept me glued to the edge of my exercise bike pretty much throughout. In the meantime, we watched 37.5 no Namida, starring Renbutsu Misako in what I think is her first or one of her first main roles. Breakout performance and a really compelling and just terrific show throughout. She was really good in supporting roles in Priceless and Zenkai Girl so it's great to see her get a chance to shine. (BTW, it appears she's in Otousan to Yobasete, so I'm curious how she is in that one.)

How is last year's J-drama adaptation of Death Note? I know the friend from Algernon is one of the main characters in that show.

We tried the new adaptation of My Little Lover and had expected that the characters were going to be older than H.S. students, not being familiar with the source material. We couldn't get into it...we've found a lot of J-dramas that are about HS students feel too fluffy or not substantive enough for us. Which is odd since we really dig American TV shows about HS characters, be they Veronica Mars or Freaks & Geeks. But, yeah, between this, My Boss, My Hero and Operation Love, we really haven't found a HS-centric drama that's jived with us. We did really dig the Freaky Friday-esque antics of 7 Days of Daddy and Daughter, though.

In the meantime, we did start 5 to 9 recently. Decent first ep, interested to see where it goes. I just saw Yamashita Tomohisa in Algernon so it takes a bit getting used to to see him as a regular Joe again. We generally really like Ishihara Satomi, especially in Rich Man, Poor Woman but also in Dear Sister. I'm hoping this one is like a lot of other J-dramas where the first ep is okay but subsequent eps build on it considerably and the show ends up being great.

I'm a bit late but I just finished Mr Nietzche and the Convenience store and it may be one of the funniest shows I've watched. The Manager was hysterical. I could just watch entire eps of them sitting in the back room having to listen to him say nonsense. And I like how they kept the breaking of the other characters in.

Ah, that's really unfortunate. I heard mixed reviews so I'll skip it based on your dislike of it. is there a better adaptation (live action) out there? Never read the manga.

I ended up watching Boys on the Run on Crunchyroll after somebody mentioned the manga to me. Boy, that was a downer of a movie. So much cringe and regret. I really liked it though. Last movie that made me feel the regret that the MC faced was 5 CM per second. I just kept feeling bad for Chiharu and Tanishi

alright, added this to my list.

I'm currently working my way through Shomuni because I finally found the first three seasons. though now that I'm midway through S3 I'm kind of looking forward to being done with it.

my backlog is getting obscene

also how did people feel about Amachan? I'm a bit hesitant to jump into a 160 episode asadora right now

I was like wtf why am I being quoted.. haven't written shit in ages. But damn, Sapuri.

I'd say remember it's kind of a product of a different time now, literally a decade ago. So the Kame love interest drama was at its peak. Forget all the romance stuff honestly, it's the marketing agency stuff that's really well done. Although if I had to have a love interest it'd be Misaki for sure.
