Mirror's Edge: Catalyst Closed Beta Thread | Didn't Get An Email? Keep Faith

Except when they tell you to knock down all the enemies in the area. Why DICE? WHY???

IMO the combat is a huge, streamlined improvement, so I'm OK with this. Once you get the flow of combat and start using more acrobatic movements to take enemies out in one hit/multi-hits, it gets amazing.

It's a pity there's no non-lethal way to take down the towers, though.

A few things that need to be sorted for the final game:

The ability to quickly jump between dash trials without having to go through the open world. I see warp is in the end game but the dashes need to be there from the get go once they are unlocked. Use the player profile to jump to them.

Load times. Especially with the dash trials, this is a huge step backwards.

Give an option for the user to have to grab on by pressing jump rather than it automatically happening. It is very annoying when you are trying to do something that requires finesse and Faith just grabs whatever is nearby. After it happens very frequently it becomes very tiresome and this is only the beta.

Skip the tutorial. Even though I can't stand it there seem to be a lot of people that like it and sets them up for the rest of the game, so give us the ability to skip it.

I play without runner vision as I think it makes the game far more fun, on the delivery missions finding where the actually final location is a puzzle itself and takes a few runs to pinpont, at the moment when you redo them do not repeat the animation or the audio explanation it is really annoying. Same with a few of the dashes they are near an audio cue so every time you restart you get the same audio clip, sometimes twice as it will sometimes be triggered in the loading screen then when you spawn.

I know it is a beta and the performance is like an actual beta but when going between different areas of the map that really needs sorting because it is some of the worst I have seen in a game for a good amount of time. There is a dash by one of these areas and the frame rate for it is all over the place.

Just unlock coil, roll and quick turn from the get go. If you want players to read about the abilities before hand give us three points in the bank to use immediately.

Towers?

And yeah combat isn't great but it's a huge improvement over the last game. I feel like a lot of people are fighting all wrong. Just mashing Y or X until they die. Use your momentum, positioning, and focus shield.

I kinda wish you could still pick up the guns and use them. In the original I liked to just mess around some times and just go on a killing spree, I had physx also so was fun just shooting all of the extra destructibles. I never understood the hate for the guns, it wasn't as if the game forced you to use them

I mostly enjoyed the original Mirror's Edge, but reeeeeeeally didn't get on with this. I still like the artstyle, but for some reason it doesn't feel like a cohesive environment to run around in and the parkour stuff didn't hold my attention for terribly long, so I got very bored very quickly. Also looking over the edge of buildings down to ground level reveals some truly hilariously poor graphics. I get that the city below isn't supposed to be the focus, but blimey.

Definitely not for me.

Exactly. Do 180 rotation jumps off walls to get height, kick enemies into other enemies/off edges, use the right moves against the right enemies (guys with guns weak against slide kicks).

It gets smooth and satisfying AF.

By Towers i mean the towers you have to disarm later in the beta, scattered in the open world. They're really good, i like them, but the group of enemies around them are unavoidable and there's no option to disarm the tower without killing the goons, which is fine for me but shit for players who don't like the combat.

The game is a lot of fun and I'm really enjoying just running around the city.

But damn it is ugly on the Xbox One, it's so damn blurry. It can't just be the resolution though because I've played loads of 720p games which looked far cleaner and clearer than this.

Oh I was confused about the non lethal part. You're still just knocking them out unless you throw them off the building lol.

Is there a disarm/counter system in the combat? I think that's the only thing missing. I hated how that was the staple of the combat in the old game, but it would help mix things up here.

I just want something to disarm the gun dudes without stun locking/running around.

People need to remember this is also a Beta. The full thing releases in just under two months. This build is probably from a few months ago and is optimised just to test the server load with route creation and leaderboards. There will have been many improvements.

Fair play re any gameplay criticisms though. bosseye - you might enjoy it more if you try replaying missions/runs and trying to beat your times? That's when the free running gameplay really comes into its own. That's what the game is built for. Finding the best route, perfecting it, getting an amazing time - so satisfying. There's a lot of creativity and fun to be had there.

Fair enough, I hope they manage to improve it somewhat.

If ever there was a game that would benefit from the Far Cry-esque, climb the towers to disable the radio puzzle, it's this game. Hopefully there's a lot of climbing puzzles similar to the Atrium section of the original.

I've been playing the PC beta over the weekend, it's awesome. This is truly a Mirror's Edge game. I liked traversing the open world, and how missions were their own closed, unique places. Combat feels good too. Already finished all story and side missions, with a bunch of optional stuff to do and collectibles to get. As a fan of the original game I didn't think I'd suck so much at races here, but I do. It makes me sad.

The things I'd like to see are customizable controls and the ability to turn the reticle off. Seeing the user-made time trials all over the world is also annoying, hopefully those can be hidden in the retail version. Another thing that feels wrong is that the game often freezes for half a second to load whenever I'm running around, even though it's installed on an SSD. The game also crashes when trying to quit after a long session, forcing me to kill its process. Guess that's because it's a beta, I hope that stuff will get fixed.

I really like how Catalyst is shaping up. June 7 can't come soon enough.

Oh yes, these two definitely should happen! That said, I wouldn't mind an optional indicator in the HUD telling me where the destination is during delivery missions, without showing me the way, though it's probably more fun without any clues at all (you can still check the destination in the map).

Played a bunch this weekend on Xbox One.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, but there was one glaring thing that annoyed me. Every time you fail a mission, you watch the same unskippable cutscene again. This can be done away with, it got old incredibly fast.

Lol I can't even run the game on my pc...

I guess Radeon HD 6900 isn't supported. It crashes immediately and I get a popup saying "The display driver has stopped working and recovered".

I'm planning on buying a GTX 970 or R9 390 soon. Anyone can tell me if it runs decently?

I enjoyed it in some ways it was more of the same with some refinements. My main issues are that as much as I like the art style idk that meshes with an open world style game. It's nice to just climb around but it feels quite plain due to the artsyle. I found some technical issues as I found some frame drops notably these occurred after I completed the main story line missions although I doubt that would be related to it. Also, the load times are very frustrating as if I miss a jump or want to retry it makes me fall out of the momentum of the game. All in all I have very few complaints being that it's a beta and there's still time for them to optimize it further.

Runs fine on my 970. Pretty much constant 60 fps on 1080p @ Ultra, once I used RTSS to fix the frame pacing.

Mind you, for Mirror's Edge specifically the R9 390 is probably the better choice, since this game is clearly optimized for AMD.

Does momentarily getting out of bounds terminate mission progress?

Did it twice in a timed delivery mission for
Birdman
and whenever I got out of bounds and returned the mission timer would disappear as if I never activated the mission in the first place.

Any videos?

Ooooh, do share, I want to see!

I wouldn't play too much with the shift movement bug if I were you. I would gladly upload a video showing you how I did it, but after exiting the game in that area of the city yesterday I've been stuck in an infinite loading screen before I'm even able to access the main menu.

Not sure if you guys are playing on PC, but by hitting the right mouse button repeatedly you can traverse small inclines that you normally should slide off of instead. Here is a video I uploaded displaying it in practice before my game broke. :(

You've been warned. :p

The plan is that you'll use an app to choose from in-game options you unlock (the Runner Kits you pick up). You can go to http://mirrorsedge.com/map and customize your profile/tag right now.

cool, thanks. seems like the social features are implemented pretty well. nothing too extreme or obtrusive. being able to make your own speed trials or w/e should be fun.

besides the loading times and unskippable cutscenes, i'm also not digging the missions in the beta too much. they're just kinda boring so far. granted, i've just broken into the krugersec building but still.

also
nomad is obviously going to betray you in some way.

Same problem here. It'll actually boot the game for me but the driver crashes before I can play. I'm canceling my pre-order unfortunately. The first game was one of my favourite games last gen :/

I'll pick it up at a discount when I get a new card (pascal/polaris) I guess.

If you're a fan of the original you should at least try the final game. EA is very good about refunds, you won't have any trouble.

Cool, thanks! I think I wanna go for the R9 because it costs pretty much the same as the 970 but it looks like my PSU will need an update as well :/. Might just as well wait for the new cards to drop then I guess :p

Yeah it sucks. I hope they'll fix the performance for the console releases as I might just pick up the PS4 release if I don't have a new card by then. Feels bad though, this is the first time I've actually not been able to play a game because my gpu is too old... Ouch.

My CPU is quite a long way below the minimum specs (AMD Athlon X4 750K) and I ran the game on medium with nothing really disturbing the experience as far as a beta goes. Well, I assume the small graphical hitches were just a beta thing. I did turn off motion blue as soon as I first launched it.

Am I the only one who found that the city buildings sometimes shine ridiculously bright light in your face, blocking your view of everything?

Overall, loved the level design and sandbox layout. Loved the visuals, loved where the story seems to be going, liked the combat and liked the focus shield mechanic.

I will almost definitely buy this game. Uncharted 4 first though.

Oh and why the fuck did they make it so you can edit gamepad controls but not keyboard and mouse button mapping? I wanted all my attack buttons to be on the mouse!

Yeah, like 3-4 in the Beta. Must be 12 or so in the full game.

Look for the blue arrow symbols on the map.

This is a Beta, man. A build far behind where they are now - possibly months behind. Who knows how much better optimised the full game will be.

Fair enough cancelling the preprder, but don't write the game off yet. See how the feedback is after release. Might be greatly improved, might still be shambolic.

I have a physical copy pre-ordered though, no returns for that. It doesn't seem to work without crashing for anyone with my card so I'm not going to waste money on the off chance they fix the game before release. I can wait.

It actually doesn't even work with my card, it's not that it just runs poorly.

Is it possible to play the beta tomorrow? I ask because I just downloaded the game but have to run to work and can't play until then. I hope to play it at some point.

Aha, OK. Might still get straightened out.

Very unlikely, mate.

Ah, I hadn't realized the PC version even had a physical copy! Makes sense.

Just fwiw, you might want to report this on the official forum, although on a second look I realized you're actually a bit below minimum requirements, so perhaps this is expected.

Who knows if it will work, but I would try, before you leave for work:
1) Startup the game, and leave it running
2) Disconnect from the internet

Edit: Wait, doesn't the beta go through the 26th? You should be fine.

guys please take pity on my and help me in my plight! i have been stuck for over an hour on the traversal attack in the battle tutorial where you springboard an wall run. Im on ps4 and whatever i do, i can get far enough and keep on being reset. they never even told me how to springboard and i don't see any springboard either. someone please help me. I got stuck on this same issue last night and have gotten no further today. thanks.

You hold the button to springboard.

If game is using 13.8GB of RAM, that game is fucking up. Especially when it doesn't look like much, like this game.

Ignoring again the fact that this is a beta, this type of sentiment makes no sense.

In an ideal world, every game would scale to use as much or as little RAM as is available, to decrease loading times, reduce pop in, and so on.

If a game has a memory leak, that's one thing, but just looking at the amount of RAM in use and saying "that's F'd up" is not a good metric.

thanks but i've been holding it and it doesn't seem to work. It says springborard+wallrun+jump+triangle. but aren't those all the L1? just running at thw wall and holding down L1 doesnt seem to work

hold L1 to springboard on whatever you need to jump off of, it should automatically wallrun if you hit the wall at an angle then tap L1 to jump off the wall run then triangle to land a heavy attack.

Anyone with problems with screen tearing on PC? Even with v-sync engaged?

Check your graphics card's control panel to make sure it's not overriding the in-game setting.

Oh, and make sure it's actually engaged in game. I've had it randomly disable itself a couple of times.

I got to the top of that runner hideout, but there was an invisible wall that prevented me from exploring very far :(

How did you get the music to change?

This game is so freaking dangerous to me

Like I can just pop in, do a few deliveries/side things, and then bounce.

This thing could last

I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the beta, but they must address the load times. In a game where you're doing a bunch of time trials, I should be able to instantly reset back to the beginning if I fall or just don't like how it's going. Also, unskippable cutscenes after a checkpoint are evil. Don't do that. Also let me turn off all the player created trials. They clutter the world and leaderboards should only show friends.
