Uncharted 4 spoiler free early copy impressions

Just be warned, the start is indeed a little slow. It's sort of like Last of Us in that respect, but the momentum build up works well with the overall pacing imo. Of course some will disagree and want something more consistently action packed.

I was warned more than plenty in this thread heh. I also don't mind 'the slow start', like, whatever, just give it to me; it's all part of the grand plan anyway, getting to know the characters, environments, relationships.

It's a physically slow start but in terms of story and things happening it's still damn dense.

It's fucking great, IMO. It fits with the theme and tone perfectly. And it still gives you plenty of fun shit to do.

^ Lol, those lonely Dooms.

When is the OT going up?

Pre-loading now :eek:oo

Hopefully tomorrow. Honestly if I don't get my early copy tomorrow afternoon I'll pre-load and play this after midnight. Eventually I'd have three copies of the game (digital, standard and steelbook) - zero fucks given, I just have to play this asap.

Master and (inspired) disciple, both on their 3rd games in 2016.

Have no idea why people are excited TLG is still alive.

Even in it's early conception it was a predictable mish-mash of the two previous titles. Now it's barely got anything to do with Fumito Ueda and it's a huge AAA production that is more about saving face than anything else.

OT:

I can't wait to get started on this, between Twitter, reviews and Youtube I've seen way more than I would have wanted.

I'm really quite upset at how it's been handled. They should have released it late April and put up with the supply issues, because the roll-out has been a bit of a mess. I was watching a review by someone on Youtube and he said "It's spoiler free, so don't wprry about watching". He goes on talking and suddenly two locations I haven't seen before pop up and he says "I'm only taking footage from early in the game, so no spoilers". Clearly not realising that none of that has been revealed. I felt like writing a comment, but what does that achieve? I shouldn't have been watching an Uncharted 4 review.

The frustration is just that it's out there so early between stolen copies, broken release dates and reviewers/streamers.

Anyway. There we go.

Yay Amazon changed my delivery date again on a preorder the weekend before it comes out. Even with Prime I am now expected to get the game on Thursday. This is getting to be sad...this is the 4th time this has happened in the last year or so.

Already emailed them but I am sure it will be nothing but excuses and a extension to my Prime account. Time to either go digital or buy retail here. Ugh

Check your Amazon orders people.

Pester support, I've seen people be able to get it changed back to Tuesday.

I have. It's been on 'pre-ordered' since 2015. Sigh.

That's why you can't really wait for Amazon if you want to play it tomorrow, or on Tuesday, at least not EU ones, sadly. Of course that means more money and not everybody's crazy enough to purchase multiple copies (standard, or steelbook).

Just checked, still saying it should arrive on Tuesday. If it's dispatched tomorrow like it says it should it'll get here for sure. Is this a primarily US issue because I'm in the UK?

Naughty Gods I will praise you everyday now and build a shrine just for you..

For me Last of Us was one of the best game, maybe the best game I ever played, and now you prove again, that there is no other Studio like you.

The Writing, Acting, Cutscenes and all the little Details are just too good. They just put any other developer to shame. ND is on a complete different level and noone is able to touch them the last 7 years.

Uncharted is a Masterpiece through and through. I will not compare it to LoU, because they are so different and it all depends on the taste you got. I am in Chapter 13 right now and I still can't believe what I am playing.

I am speechless. The Visiuals, The AA solution are out of this world. What takes my breath the most, are the cutscenes and the facial animations. You can see every single emotion und muscle move. The Lighting is astonishing and the dialogues so natural und well written, that I fear the End, because then it will be all over.

Thanks Neil Druckman, Bruce Straley and all the other guys at Naughty Dog, for bringing this medium forward like no other developer.

7gb of pre-load to go...25hrs43m until live...

There are some benefits to living in Australia, timezone being one of them :)

Even in it's early conception it was a predictable mish-mash of the two previous titles.

Show me this design document you've got of TLG. I didn't realise that a game being "more Ico than SotC", "set in a giant castle", "escaping with a unpredictable AI companion" automatically makes it predictable as well as something not worth being excited for.

I really like both games, so it being anywhere in the quality of those two games is massive win for me.

Now it's barely got anything to do with Fumito Ueda

False. Fumito Ueda remains game/creative/design director for the entirety of TLG. The only difference is that instead of being an in-house Japan Studio employee, he's set-up his own studio and is contracted by Sony externally.

It's like how Mark Cerny is of "Cerny Games", but he's effectively a Sony employee under Sony's payroll.

and it's a huge AAA production that is more about saving face than anything else.

We have no proof thast it's a huge AAA production, and the only citation regarding this refutes it by saying that TLG is not anywhere close to say, an Uncharted or Horizon-scale game. Of course, we have no proof Shu is telling the truth on this or not, but there is no evidence either that this is a huge AAA production, not without seeing the credits.

Ueda is still the creative director of TLG. We know that because Sony made it as abundantly clear as possible at E3 last year when "Directed by Fumito Ueda" was plastered on the screen at the beginning of the re-reveal trailer, and the man himself was personally thanked and invited to take a bow afterwards too. And it isn't a huge AAA production at all. Yoshida confirmed at some point that, despite the game's elongated development, it isn't that costly a project because the team working on it is very small in number.

The very simple reason that people are still excited is because ICO and Shadow of the Colossus remain classics of their medium, and we want more.

Yeah already sent an email. It usually doesn't get me more than excuses and a extension to my Prime account. :\

Yeah, they used to be great for this and it just keeps getting worse and worse.

You should be good to go then.

Happening a lot in the US where I am. Sadly...

I have the collectors edition preordered and it still says "shipping soon". It's been like that since Friday.

It should do well. Amazon:

#01 PS4 Uncharted 4
#11 PS4 Uncharted 4 SE
#64 PS4 Uncharted 4 Digitial
#54 PS4 Uncharted 4 LE

At least it comes at a perfect time, there are not many big releases in sight. I feel like Battleborn had zero hype going for it and Doom while faring a bit better also feels to be almost a stealth release compared to what I was expecting. I'm actually really interested in how Doom does.

edit: oh and can't forget Homefront. Poor bastards :(

Just finished it. Great game.

I'd rank it on par with U2 and TLOU I think. It doesn't have the wow factor of either but it's 12 hours of top tier gameplay and adventure.

My main complaint would be Sam isn't a very interesting character.

I'll make this as spoiler free as possible, I've only played a few hours so far but here's my impressions in the form of bananas (more detail in spoiler tags, I'd consider them spoiler free but there's some people who say the game is ruined for them if you say that you shoot a gun etc)

Graphics: Holy bananas

Story/acting: Like a fresh banana full of flavour.
It's great, still has lots of lighthearted stuff and I've had a nice laugh and big smile at some moments. The facial animation in cutscenes is on a whole other level.

Music: Like a generic banana.
I can't really remember any standout tunes, but it does the job.
Controls/gameplay: Like a firm banana that peels just right.
It's a lot more fluid/seamless and the analogue climbing makes everything going seem smoother. I like the little effects of hit markers/dots on the HUD that show where a bullet has gone

Overall: It's top bananas

1. Agreed re truly great game.

2. The wow factor has been significantly greater for me in UC4 than in UC2 or TLoU.

The 'set pieces' and 'wow moments' are smaller in scale but infinitely greater in detail and realism, which makes you really feel the fucking intensity. I have literally shouted and laughed out loud while playing this - nothing in TLoU or UC2 made me shout out loud. (Of course they're both masterpieces.)

3. Sam Drake is fucking great. He slots right in, they introduce him perfectly, he is just as witty and funny as Nate but with a bit more edge/recklessness.

The patter between him and Drake has been one of the game's highlights for me so far. They're written perfectly as people who have spent way too much time together. Like constant in-jokes, jabs and remarks, familiarity and mocking of each others banter.

Also there's an early-ish scene with Sam which I won't spoil but I honestly don't understand how you can call him a not-interesting character after that scene. It was fucking fantastic.Very minor tone/detail spoiler, non-plot/story:
And you could see the stress/intensity on his face the entire time, even during gameplay, which made me feel closer to him than I ever expected.

snip and thanks

I'm going to be interested in finding out more about Sam. Just like in films and in books, ND use the gaming media to it's fullest and so any detail is there for a reason. You've already mentioned something I'd suspected about Sam and I have other opinions I'd like verifying (NOT HERE! While playing), and it's all based on the fact he's not wearing a watch. That tells me a lot about him.

So I just got done having a fun chat with Amazon

Apparently if you even dare to use the "Apply gift card balance" to your orders when you go into the Order Details page that can cause a delay in shipment. This is a rather interesting policy if you ask me. They state that any change to your order pushes you out of the "virtual line". I could understand if I changed credit card numbers or delivery address, you know the changes that actually push a email to you about said changes. Here I literately clicked a button to apply the credit to pay it off instead of it drawing funds from my bank. That is what delayed my order....crazy.

I pay for Prime...almost a $100 for this kind of special lol.

I never felt a connection to him like I did Sully, Elaina, Chloe or Cutter.

Oh man, sorry to hear that. It's pretty confusing how that works, especially for being a Prime member. I almost switched my order to Amazon balance, but heard things like your situation happening when I looked it up.

What's strange is I get it if you went in and changed payment method. But I just clicked the little button they show at the top saying "You have this much in Amazon Credit, apply it to this order" button.

Guess I know better now. They bumped it up to one day shipping thankfully. Still a ludicrous and asinine policy if you ask me.

This is going to be a really bad game for replayability imo.

First time through is awesome. However, it feels like 85% of this game is non combat encounters. Its just traversal or puzzle solving.

Combat feels so amazing in this game now, that I wish there were more encounters.

Your opinion on the game (I caved) seems to have matched my prediction, its been a constant down hill of enthusiasm since like day 2. I'm getting MGSV vibes from your impressions. Would you say its similar in the way you were disappointed with that game for its faults?

No not similar at all. MGSV has the greatest gameplay I have ever played but the structure, story and it being unfinished really hurt it.

Uncharted 4 is masterfully done, I just personally prefer the more constant and scripted action of U2. The way I look at it is this, is openness Uncharted's strength? Not really, so focus on your strengths which is huge action setpieces. Unless you see this the same way I do it probably won't be an issue for you.

MGSV has clear faults that can't be denied. Uncharted 4 is going to be an argument of preference. There is no argument of the level of quality.

I just did the mission from the E3 (?) demo in the car downhill etc. It was incredible. One of the best things i've experienced in a game.

I never felt a connection to him like I did Sully, Elaina, Chloe or Cutter.

I felt nothing for Cutter. He was fun, but a completely shoe-horn character. You could completely remove him from UC3 and nothing would change.

Sam is a different ballgame altogether.

I'd agree that Sully, Elena and Chloe are a bit more vital, though.

IMO they made the right call.

If you're looking for more combat gameplay, the MP (and later co-op mode) will provide that in spades.

Multiplayer/co-op is literally wall-to-wall action, so it was wise to put less action setpieces into the campaign.

Chloe and Cutter weren't vital to the story like Sam but they were more interesting and entertaining I thought.
